Investigating the Cohesive Devices in the Oral English Discourse of College Students and
its Implications for Language Teaching

Abstract: The present paper is intended to apply the theory of cohesion in systemic functional linguistics to the teaching of oral English in
China. After analyzing the data of the oral English texts produced by non- English-major college students, we summarize and categorize all the
cohesive devices that occur in the data, find the problems in the use of cohesive devices in these texts and propose the possible strategies and
methods for solving these problems in teaching oral English. It is hoped that it can shed some light on the teaching of oral English to non- En-
glish major students in this aspect in China.
