- 2.6.1 SCOPE

2.6.1.l The electrical and/or braided wireline operations

ARP' s have been developed by the Blowout Prevention 'Well
Servicing Committee (BPWSC) with consideration for Alberta
completion and servicing activities and environment,
recognizing the need for equipment integrity during both
routine completion and servicing conditions and those
conditions which could be encountered during well control
operations.

The equipment considered includes all equipment which forms

an integral part of the pressure control equipment directly
attached to the BOP stack or wellhead.

2.6.1.2 This ARP is part of a series. For the overall

intent of, and as a general reference to the whole series,
please refer to ARP 2.0. The recom.mendations contained in
this ARP provide operators with industry endorsed advice, and
are intended to be applied in association with all existing

- ERCB regulations as well as the other AI.Ps.

legal enforcem.ent of good practices is not
possible,
While strict

the BPWSC believes that such practices

desired or
place
considerable onus on the leally responsible party to comply
or otherwise provide a technically equivalent or better
solution.

2.6.1.3 While the recommendations set out in this ARP are

meant to allow flexibility, the need for exercising competent
technical judgeaent is a necessary requirement to be employed
concurrently with its use. While every effort has been made
to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the data contained
in the ARP and to avoid errors and omissions, the IPWSC, its
subcommittees, and individual members aake no representation,
warranty or guarantee in connection with the publication or
the contents of any ARP recom.mendation, and hereby disclaim
liability or responsibility for losa or damage reaulting from.
the use of this ARP, or for any violation of any statutory or
regulatory requirement with which an AI.P recommendation may
conflict.

2.6.1.4 In cases of inconsistency or conflict between any of

the recommended practices contained in this ARP and
applicable legislative requirementa, the legislative
requirements shall prevail.

NOTE: Quick union (non hammer union) connection

with an elaatomeric aeal and acme thread
are acceptable for connections above the
flan1ed connection to the wellhead
(Appendis 1, Figure 2).

&ama on lower BOP aay be inverted to hold

preaaure froa top or raas installed to
hold preasure froa bottom.

Vith a double wireline BOP stack, two (2)

options for installing the rama on the
lower BOP are aentioned, inverted to hold
preasure froa the top and installed to
hold preaaure from tbe bottom. Vith the
bottoa raa inverted and both BOP's
closed on the line, then grease injected
between the BOP's is contained and seals
the line blocking aigration of gas
through the cable. This configuration
- has one (1) BOP to contain the well.
(Appendis 1, Figure 6).
.;. 8 - 89/04

With both BOP's installed to hold

--
pressure from below and both BOP's closed
on the line, then grease injected between
the JlOP' a may leak past the lower BOP
into the well. The grease will seal the
line blocking migration of gaa through
the cable and this configuration has two
(2) BOP's to contain the well.
Consideration of a third BOP could be
given.

Grease injected between closed BOP's ata

higher pressure than well pressure blocks
migration of gas through the cable. It
also flushes incompatible fluid& away
from elastomer seals.

If ri BOP'a are being used, then single

BOP is acceptable. However, the rig BOP
must be able to close on wireline.

Lubricators with presaure ratings up to

69 MPa (10 000 psi) require two 13 mm
(1 /2") NPT bleed-of f. 103 MPa ( 15 000
-
psi) and higher pressure lubricators
require two staggered APl Type l, Type II
or Type 111 high pressure test or gauge
bleed-off connectiona.

The ainimum standard connections are

8RD-EUE threads, aodified with
elastomeric or sbamrock sealed
connectiona rated at 21 MPa (3 000 psi).
Above 21 MPa (3 000 psi) all connections
must be 0-ltin sealed, have a aetal to
metal aealed connectiou with premiua
thread orbe an integral union (Appendiz
I, Figures 3 and 4).

NPT threads are acceptable to a maziaua

of 25 (1") in accordance with APl
Specification 6A 2 , (Sec. 3, Part B-1B).

The greaae when pumped between the close

fitting flow tubea at a higher preaaure
- 9 - 89/04

- than the well pressure causes a friction

seal which contains well gases and
fluids.

Grease drain hose should be connected to

a well ventilated container.

The optional line wiper shall also be

remotely operated a minimum distance of
25 metres from wellhead (Appendix 1,
Figure 1, Number 12).

NOTES:
t. API 6A REFERS to 15th Ed. l April 1986.
2. The focua of the Technical Resources Subcommlttee effort has been to recommend MINIHUH standards for material& to be used
for crltlcal sour servlce. These recommendatlons are prlmarlly designed to prevent Sulphide Stress Corroalon Cracking
because lt can result in the "rapid" failure of JDetals. Similarly (aa noted in the NACE MR-01-75 (1984 Revislon)
Speclficatlon) auatenitic stalnless steels can fail rapidly from chlorlde stress corrosion cracking in certaln
environments. However, the material selectlon for reshtlng the many forme of weight losa corrosion is left as an
economlc declslon to be made by the equipment owner or well operator.
