Introduction
As Principal and foundation of Islamic faith, Muslims has to believe in 6 (Six) article of faith,
namely Believe in Allah, His Angels, his books, his messengers, the Last Day and His Decree.
[1]

These believe are very much stipulated in the Quran and the Sunnah of the prophet .

Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but [true]
righteousness is [in] one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the
prophets and gives wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler,
those who ask [for help], and for freeing slaves; [and who] establishes prayer and gives
zakah; [those who] fulfill their promise when they promise; and [those who] are patient in
poverty and hardship and during battle. Those are the ones who have been true, and it is those
who are the righteous. (Surah Baqarah: 177;Sahih international)

[All] praise is [due] to Allah, who has sent down upon His Servant the Book and has not
made therein any deviance.( Surah Kahfi:1;sahih international)

And We send down of the Qur'an that which is healing and mercy for the believers, but it
does not increase the wrongdoers except in loss. .( Surah Isra:82;sahih international)

And extrapolating from the Sunnah of the prophet , when the Angel Jibril, ask regarding the
tenets of faith to which the prophet replied,

It is to believe in the Allah, his angels, his books, his messengers, the Last Day and His
Decree.[2]

From these evidences, believe in all the Books of , including the Quran are key principal
of the Islamic faith. From these derivations, it is also establish that refer to the Quran by
a number of names which formulates the characteristic of the Book. One particular name of
the Quran is Shifa[3] which translate as a characteristic Quran as a source of healing
strengthen by other verses of the Quran which speak of the this characteristic.

And if We had made it a non-Arabic Qur'an, they would have said, "Why are its verses not
explained in detail [in our language]? Is it a foreign [recitation] and an Arab [messenger]?"
Say, "It is, for those who believe, a guidance and cure." And those who do not believe - in
their ears is deafness, and it is upon them blindness. Those are being called from a distant
place.(surah Fussilat:44;sahih international)

Thus from the above evidences we firmly establish a source of Healing is the Quran.

Classification Diseases and cure from Quran
With the terminology of healing, it details two aspects, disease and cure.in both aspects
spectrum details are sub classified in further categories.

Diseases are of two classifications, firstly an illness that attacks the physical aspect of
oneself. Physical illness as defined in Disease of the heart and their cure by Ibn Qayim Al
Jauziyah, the disease of the body is the opposite of being sound and in good health, it is a
degeneration that occurs in causing a failure of natural senses, perception and movement
and defined in depth .with failure of natural senses occurs in instance such as deafness
and Blindness.with the failure of perception occurring in instance of hallucination/
Schizophrenia that has no realitywith the failure of movement example of this would be
bodys aversion to nourishment that is needed resulting in a weaken physical state .

The secondly form of Illness being define is that affect the spiritual well-being of oneself by
way of suspicion, doubts and desires. This form of diseases, has mention in great details
and along with this, specified the causes and the cure. [4].An example of such verse is,

And is it not sufficient for them that We revealed to you the Book which is recited to them?
Indeed in that is a mercy and reminder for a people who believe.(surah Ankabut:51;sahih
international)

Remedies for physical illness are divided into 4(four) types [5],

Firstly medicine that affects the temperament of the illness, this form of remedy dictates
intimate knowledge and analysis that affect the ailment by this we refer to someone for their
advice and their knowledge of these sciences.it is also recorded in numerous hadith the
prophet , prescribe material items as medicine for example, when the prophet prescribe
camel milk and urine for the traveller that were sick [6] And the Quran outline the medicinal
effects of Honey as found in Surah Nahl verse 69.

Secondly, preserving the general health of one-self by means of material nourishments or

maintaining physical strength. This notion is reaffirmed by the Quran.

[Fasting for] a limited number of days. So whoever among you is ill or on a journey [during
them] - then an equal number of days [are to be made up].(surah Al Baqarah:184;sahih
international)
From the above verve, has allowed the sick, the traveller to break their fast such as to
preserve and maintain the physical strength.

Thirdly, removing the harmful substance from the body.

And whoever among you is ill or has an ailment of the head [making shaving necessary must
offer] a ransom of fasting [three days] or charity or sacrifice (surah Al Baqarah:196;sahih
international)

has allowed the sick and those suffering from ailment of the scalp to shave of the head,
which by norm is prohibited while wearing ihram. Thus this also gives an example of
removing of harmful substance that may harm the general health of the body.

The fourth means of seeking a remedy is by prophetic remedy using invocations of the Quran
and Sunnah. This Fourth manner will be explained in the next chapter.

Knowing Quran as a source of healing
As mention in the previous chapter, It have been stated, Quran as a source of healing.

And We send down of the Qur'an that which is healing and mercy for the believers, but it
does not increase the wrongdoers except in loss. .( Surah Isra:82;sahih international)

The word , in above verse indicates the entirety of Quran and not suggesting only a
section of the Quran as cure encompassing both Physical and spiritual illness. [7]

From the Hadith [8], 'A'isha reported: that when any of the members of the household fell ill
Allah's Messenger ( )used to blow over him by reciting Mu'awwidhatan, and when he
suffered from illness of which he died I used to blow over him and rubbed his body with his
hand for his hand had greater healing power than my hand.

From Hadith [9] Narrated by Abu Sa`id Al kudri: Some of the companions of the Prophet ()
went on a journey till they reached some of the 'Arab tribes (at night). They asked the latter to
treat them as their guests but they refused. The chief of that tribe was then bitten by a snake
(or stung by a scorpion) and they tried their best to cure him but in vain. Some of them said
(to the others), "Nothing has benefited him, will you go to the people who resided here at
night, it may be that some of them might possess something (as treatment)," They went to the
group of the companions (of the Prophet ( ) )and said, "Our chief has been bitten by a snake
(or stung by a scorpion) and we have tried everything but he has not benefited. Have you got
anything (useful)?" One of them replied, "Yes, by Allah! I can recite a Ruqya, but as you have
refused to accept us as your guests, I will not recite the Ruqya for you unless you fix for us
some wages for it." They agrees to pay them a flock of sheep. One of them then went and
recited (Surat-ul-Fatiha): 'All the praises are for the Lord of the Worlds' and puffed over the
chief who became all right as if he was released from a chain, and got up and started walking,
showing no signs of sickness. They paid them what they agreed to pay. Some of them (i.e. the
companions) then suggested dividing their earnings among themselves, but the one who
performed the recitation said, "Do not divide them till we go to the Prophet ( )and narrate
the whole story to him, and wait for his order." So, they went to Allah's Messenger ( )and
narrated the story. Allah's Messenger ( )asked, "How did you come to know that Surahtul-
Fatiha was recited as Ruqya?" Then he added, "You have done the right thing. Divide (what
you have earned) and assign a share for me as well." The Prophet ( )smiled thereupon.

From hadith [10]Aishah reported:When a person complained to the Prophet ( )about an

ailment or suffered from a sore or a wound, the Prophet ( )would touch the ground with his
forefinger and then raise it (Sufyan bin `Uyainah, the narrator, demonstrated this with his
forefinger) and would recite: `Bismil-lahi, turbatu ardina, biriqati ba`dina, yushfa bihi

6|Page
saqimuni, bi 'idhni Rabbina' (With the Name of Allah, the dust of our ground mixed with the
saliva of some of us would cure our patient with the permission of our Rubb.''
Also from the reason of revelation [11], then reveal the Mu'awwidhatan as a remedy for the
witchcraft compromising of surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas,when the Prophet was
bewitched by Labeed Ibn Assam with strands hair and teeth of comb.

Thus from the above evidences based upon the Quran and the hadith, it is establish recitation
of the Quran and invocations, provides a cure for the physical illness.

As with the statement of Ibn Qayyim with para-phasing [12]the one whom did not find a cure
with Quran, May not cure him and the one whom Quran did not suffice him, May not
suffice him.

However the statement, did not negate the fact of seeking cure by other means, it merely
suggest that seeking a cure from Quran should formulate the primary measure and other
means such as consumption of medicines are secondary and provides supplementary curative
effects.

Relating Ibn Qayyim personal account[12],while he was in Mecca,he was sick for an extensive
period, while unable to find a remedy and a doctor, he then seek a cure by reciting of Surah
Fatiha and drinking Zam-Zam,and with this he found his illness subsided. Thus it becomes
imperative that Ibn Qayyim seek a remedy with recitation of the Quran and concurrently with
faith in the curative effects of the Zam-Zam water.

As with the above Hadith narrated, The Prophet , uttered an Invocation couple with the
action of mixing spittle and dust to concoct a treatment.Ibn Hajar optioned the view that the
mixing spittle and dust are simply external means thus supporting the notion.

Also narrated in the Musnad of Imam Ahamad,Sunan AT-Trimdhi and Sunan-Ibn Majah Abu
Khuzamah reported:I said,O messenger of ,about the Ruqya we use,the medicine we
take and the prevention we seek, does all this change appointed destiny?he said:they are
a part of destiny.

The above hadith expresses the understanding of the companion and affirmation of the
prophet, by seeking a cure by the stipulated methods and by abandoning or negating the
curative effect and preventive measures are contrary to the correct method and reliance of
.As matters of fact, sole dependence upon supplication and disavowing external means,
weaken reliance in , as the true essence is to acquire what benefits himself and his religion
while fending off what harm himself and his religion. Otherwise in truth, the person will not
be implementing the commandments and wisdom.

In conclusion, As Muslim we have to establish firm faith in Quran as a Cure, seeking a

treatment with it whiles applying supplementary mean to expedite the effects of remedy. This

methodology provides a divine element, which aid the treatment process and inducing a
positive effect on his heart strengthening piety and asceticism. This process in reality has a
pacifying effect and reaffirms the heart, pointing to the correct approach of dependence in
, seeking benefit by what that aid him to please his lord.
The Quran relates to us the comprehensive practice in the process of maintaining health by
finding benefit in medicinal properties in materials items, removing harm from the body and
conserving health.

It is also a matter of fact, curing the ills of the Body without curing the heart does not brings
lasting benefit. For with certainty finding a cure from the Quran by incorporating the Quran
in treatment process, the heart is connected to the Lord of the world, the creator of the illness
and its cure thus physical and spiritual essence of one self become stronger complementing
each other in defeating the illness. This by far, has a distinct soothing effect as one-self draw
closer having the absolute awareness and remembrance of his weakness and increasing
reliance in creating a more comprehensive, effective and lasting remedy.
