Definition of Engineering Geology (IAEG, 1992)

The science devoted to

1. the investigation, study and solution of the
engineering and environmental problems which
may arise as the result of the interaction
between geology and the works and activities
of man
2. as well as to the prediction and of the
development of measures for prevention or
remediation of geological hazards

Engineering geology is about applying all

branches of the geosciences

to assure the safety, efficiency, and economy

of engineering and environmental projects,
which are mainly concerned with the
geological problems encountered in civil
engineering.

The Main Tasks of Engineering Geology

1. Provide the basic information for the plan,

design and construction of the civil
engineering.

2. Investigate and evaluate the geological

engineering problems.

The Purposes of Engineering Geology

1. Provide good geological environment for

engineering construction.
2. Evaluate and forecast the engineering geological
problems that may occurred in the period of the
service time of the engineering construction. On
this base, to give the effective engineering
prevention methods.

Works of an Engineering Geologist?

To document the geology information at the construction site
To determine the location and sampling number for analyses and
evaluation
To analyze and evaluate the rock and rock-mass engineering
criteria
To determine the homogeneity of the engineering geological unit
To develop an engineering geology model of concerned area
To support the protection of engineering construction based on the
geological point of view
