HT Bolts: IS 1367

This IS covers bolts made of cast steel & alloy steel. This part of IS covers bolts ranging from M1.6 to
M 39

Material grade designation.

General requirement of Standardized bolts, nuts & washers are defined by the following:

1. Mechanical properties
2. Product grade
3. Surface coatings (if required)
4. Specific requirements (if agreed between purchaser & supplier)

The finish of the product shall be black oxide coated for quenched & tempered steel

Plain for SS & non ferrous materials

As processed for non quenched & tempered steel.

Mechanical properties of Carbon steel & alloy steel fasteners

Testing condition: 10 C to 35 C

As testing temperature condition increases yield stress becomes low (IS 1367 part 3)

Chemical Check:

Chemical values to be indicated in Test certificate

Carbon
Phosporus
Sulphur
Boron

And tempering temperature

Mechanical properties:

Minimum tensile strength applies to bolt whose length l 2.5 d

Minimum hardness applies when l 2.5 d

If lower yield stress cant be determined, stress at 0.2% non proportional elongation can be
determined.

Hardness checking can be done by any method, but vicker hardness is most preferable.

Tensile test for machined test pieces

Tensile strength
Lower yield stress or stress at 0.2% non proportional elongation
Percentage elongation after fracture ((final gauge length(LG) original gauge
length(Lo))/original gauge length))
Percentage reduction in area after fracture ((cross sectional area before tensile test cross
sectional area after fracture)/ cross sectional area before tensile test)

If elongation cant be measured, reduction of area can be measured provided Lo > 3 dia of test piece

Tensile test for full size bolt:

Minimum free threaded length equal to one dia shall be subjected to tensile load.

In this test fracture shall occur in shank or free threaded area and not at junction of head & shank

Torsional Test:

This test applies to bolts & screws whose nominal thread dia 3mm as well as short bolts whose
nominal thread dia 3mm d 10 mm which cannot be subjected to tensile test.

Hardness test:

It can be checked at head, end or shank after suitable surface preparation.

If a maximum hardness is reached, retest shall be conducted at the mid radius or one dia back from
end.

Proof load test:

Proof load shall be applied axially and held for 15s. The length of free thread subjected to load shall
be one dia.

Measurement of bolt after proof load test done with help of spherical anvils.

If any damage observed during 1st test, re test shall be carried out with 3 % extra load and if no
increase in length observed, bolt can be selected.

Wedge tensile test:

The distance between thread run out of bolt and contact surface of nut shall be d

To meet the requirement of this test, fracture shall occur at free thread length of the bolt or shank
and not between head and shank

Impact test:

Test piece shall be taken length wise, located as close to.

Head Soundness test:

Tested for full size bolts with dia 10 mm, when hammered several times, bolt shall turn 90 without
any cracks at shank head area.
