The apartheid, a word so unused in our vocabulary , was in fact one of the most unfair

political systems in the world. Apartheid como form the afrikan word apart- hood that
means the state of being apart, apartheid was a political system introduced in South
Africa and Namibia after the World War II, it consisted in racial segregation. Legislation
classified inhabitants into four racial groups: "black", "white", "coloured", and "Indian", the
last two of which were divided into several sub-classifications and residential areas were
segregated.

On the other hand, Nelson Mandela was born on July 18, 1918, into a royal family of the
Xhosa-speaking Thembu tribe in the South African village of Mvezo. He was the first in his
family to receive a formal education, Mandela completed his primary studies at a local
missionary school, later He went on to attend the Clarkebury Boarding Institute and
Healdtown, a Methodist secondary school and finally in1939 Mandela entered the elite
University of Fort Hare, the only Western-style higher learning institute for South African
blacks at the time. During this time Mandela began to express his discomfort against the
country political system along with his friend and future business partner, Oliver Tambo.

After completing his bachelor degree in law clerk by mail and his career in law in the
University of Witwatersrand, Mande joined the ANC (African National Congress) in where
he his quest against the apartheid. He was put behind bars several times for treason, but in
1967 he was sent to Robben Island Prison in where he spent 27 years of his life. In 1990 he
was released due to the international pressure and the newly elected southafrican
president F. W. de Klerk. In 1993 he received the Nobel Peace Prize for his lifetime struggle
against the apartheid.

On April 26, 1994, more than 22 million South Africans turned out to cast ballots in the
countrys first multiracial parliamentary elections in history. An overwhelming majority
chose the ANC to lead the country, and on May 10 Mandela was sworn in as the first black
president of South Africa, with de Klerk serving as his first deputy. During his tenure he
introduced numerous social and economic programs designed to improve the living
standards of South Africas black population. In 1996 Mandela presided over the enactment
of a new South African constitution in where he improved racial relationships in the
country he formed a multiracial Government of National Unity and proclaimed the
country a rainbow nation at peace with itself and the world.

Later on 1999, Mandela removed himself from politics but remained a devoted champion
for peace and social justice in his own country and around the world. He established a
number of organizations, including the influential Nelson Mandela Foundation and The

Elders, an independent group of public figures committed to addressing global problems

and easing human suffering. Mandelas story is worth admiring and which we have Heard
hundreds of times but perhaps we unknown his story and what he brought to the world. He
helped reduce the our intolerance towards others, to be more mind open and to accept
everyone despite all of our differences.
