Chapter 1

A. Background

Terrorism, as the name implies, is a violent crime that use violence in order to achieve a

political, religious or ideological aim. Terrorism came from the French word terrorisme that

was originally used to refer to state terrorism as practiced by the French government during the

1793-1794 Reign of Terror. The French word terrorisme in turn was derived from the Latin

verb terrere which means to frighten. Although terrorism was originally used to refer to acts

committed by a government, it is currently is used to refer to the killing of the innocent people

for political purposes in such a way as to create a spectacle.

Terrorism is not new even though it has been used since the early times of recorded history. Even

common people have an idea what terrorism is and as the name implies it is about producing

terror to a society. As time progresses with the increasing advent of technology specifically

systems controlled by computers, terrorist, the one who execute terrorism, had created a new

form of terrorism, the cyber terrorism. Cyber threats combined with destruction of physical

properties are really an unforgivable crime.

The primary cause of terrorism is to achieve their objectives and ideology and motivation will

influence it. Groups with secular ideologies and non-religious goals will often attempt highly

selective and discriminate acts of violence to achieve a specific political aim. This often requires

them to keep casualties at the minimum amount necessary to attain the objective. By limiting

their attacks they reduce the risk of undermining external political and economic support.

Todays terrorism usually operated internationally, and it is called international terrorism.

International terrorism become a major concern following fatal attacks that happened this past
months particularly in Europe where series of attacks were executed and claimed by one of the

biggest terrorist group ISIS. It is relevant to know the perceptions of youth in this regard for it

may somehow help the society and government to have preventive measures against terrorism.

terrorism. We also chose this in order to help succeeding researchers in understanding how the
