Insimpletermsthe(mass)participationfactorsquaredgivesyoutheeffectivemodalmassforthatmodeforyourstructure.Noticewhenyouseethesefactorsthattheyareassociatedwitha
"direction"(X,Y,Z,etc..).Thinkofitlikethis:thereisasimplepointmassona(massless)spring,and1DOFinthesystemonly.Dynamicallyloaded,thepointmassisallowedtobounce
happilyupanddownonthespringinonedirection,hencethewholeofthemass(intheory)isparticipatinginthebouncinginthatdirection.Thesquarerootinthiscaseofthepointmassis
theparticipationfactor,sincethewholeofthemassisparticipatinginthemode.

Dependingonwhatyou'relookingataswell(thetypeofstructure,thecodeyou'reusing,etc.),I'dalwaysgowith90%effectivesystemmassandabovetomakesureyou'vecapturedthe
