Vision sensor with built-in lighting I V Series

The Seven Techniques

to Stable Detection
CAPTURE LARGE IMAGES OF THE WORKPIECE!
Technique

1 Capture the largest images that you can of the product to be detected.
Even for parts that are the same size, the size of the captured image greatly affects the detection performance.
The larger the captured image, the more stable the detection.

Details In order to display a sufficiently large Installation

sensor as much as possible. 7.5 mm 10 mm
The closer the distance, the smaller the
field of view.
Please adjust the installation distance to

changes The differentiation was performed by checking the shapes with the spade set as the master.
Installation distance: 300 mm

The
match percentage for the spade is 100. The
match percentage for the club is 52.

Installation distance: 50 mm

The
match percentage for the spade is 100. The
match percentage for the club is 0.

Capturing a large image of the workpiece greatly affects the match percentage.

matter to the maximum.
(2) If you wish to distinguish between any differences when looking at a specific section
of the product, zoom in on the specific section.
2
TRY CHANGING THE BACKGROUND COLOUR!
Technique

2 Changing the background colour may lead to dramatic improvements in the detection performance.
Increasing the contrast between the workpiece and the background, for example a white workpiece
with a black background or vice-versa, stabilises the detection.

Details Select a background colour that makes it possible to clearly capture the image of the workpiece's shape.
Generally, select a white background for black or metal workpieces and a black background for white workpieces.

Stability We compared the stability for the shape of a metal key with a white background and with a black
changes background.
Black background

White background

The white background made it possible to cleanly extract the shape of the key.

(1) When performing tests on a desktop, try using black and white backgrounds.
Tips for Stable Detection
(2) If the installation environment is already fixed, try testing it on-site, or on a background
with a similar colour or material.

3
TRY USING A POLARISED FILTER!
Technique

3 A polarised filter has characteristics that only allow certain components of a light wave to pass.
Polarised filters are useful in preventing glare from glossy workpieces.
You can use a polarised filter to enable stable detections when glare is an issue.

Details
Attach the polarised filter to the front of the sensor.

changes

Without polarised filter With polarised filter

By attaching a polarised filter, any glare in the centre of the image will be
removed, making the image much easier to use for detection.

(1) Basically, attaching the polarised filter helps clearly detect colours and shapes.
Tips for Stable Detection
(2) Remove the polarised filter when creating glare intentionally to make the difference
clear.

4
TRY USING A DOME ATTACHMENT!
Technique

4 Like polarised filters, dome attachments have the effect of preventing glare on glossy subjects,
but offer even greater glare-preventing effects than polarised filters. When it is not possible to achieve
the desired effects with a polarised filter, try using a dome attachment.

Attach the dome attachment to the front of the sensor.

With dome light With polarised filter

As shown above, the glare cannot be completely eliminated with a polarised

filter, but can be cleanly eliminated by using a dome attachment.

(1) If the target object is metallic, the appearance will change dramatically when using the

attachment.
(2) If the size of the attachment does not fit, try tilting the head of the sensor slightly.

5
TRY USING THE DIGITAL ZOOM!
Technique

5 When using the "digital zoom function", it is possible to magnify the desired section of the field of
view for taking pictures. Magnification allows significant increases in detection stability, even when
increasing the distance from the subject matter.

Details

settings on the Image Optimisation screen.

Stability We compared images captured with the digital zoom turned on and off.
changes With the digital zoom turned on

With the digital zoom turned off

Turning on the digital zoom makes it possible to capture large images of the
workpiece without changing the resolution, which makes the differences between
passing and failing workpieces clear. This makes detections more stable.

(1) Be sure to try this method when it is not possible to install the sensor head any closer.
Tips for Stable Detection
(2) The digital zoom can also be used to ignore portions of the part that could make
detection unstable.

6
TRY MANUALLY ADJUSTING THE BRIGHTNESS!
Technique

6 The IV is equipped with a function that automatically adjusts the brightness to the optimal value.
However, you may be able to obtain more stable detection by manually adjusting the brightness.

Details

(1) From the Sensor Setup Menu, (2) Select Image Optimization under
select Sensor Setup. Settings Navigator.

(3) Select Advanced Brightness Adjustment (4) Set the optimal exposure time while
from the expanded settings on the Image checking the captured image on the
Optimisation screen. screen.

Stability
Let's compare the images captured with manual brightness adjustment and with no brightness adjustment.
changes

No brightness adjustment Fine manual adjustment of brightness

As shown in the example, there are cases where manual adjustment of the
brightness makes it possible to express the colour more cleanly.

With image-processing sensors, it is even more important to clearly bring out the

differences in the content you wish to detect.

7
Making Effective Use of the
Technique

7 By connecting the IV series optional touch-panel monitor/controller (IV-M30), it is possible to

quickly and simply change setups on site.

Examples of use as a monitor

Tool display
Select the display patterns of tools from OFF /
Window / Process 1 / Process 2
Allows on-site checking of
stability levels in the current
environment.

Statistics display
Displays statistical information (Number of
OK and NG outputs, etc.) on the monitor.
Allows the current
operational status of the
sensor to be checked easily.

Histogram display
Displays OK/NG histogram of status on
the monitor.
Can display histograms of
the MIN/MAX thresholds
and total number of
OK/NGs etc.

Intelligent Monitor (IV-M30)!

Examples of use as a dedicated controller

When using the monitor function as shown here, it is

possible to configure and add on new tools, as well as
register new workpieces all on-site and without a
PC. Up to 32 programmes can be pre-loaded, making
it possible to change setups on-site, all with just a
single touch. Since detection effects and settings can
be saved to USB, it is possible to continue work without
ever once having to use a PC.

Uses a touch panel makes for intuitive and speedy setup.
