introduction

The objective of this project is to develop students understanding and

knowledge of building service system in design and construction.
Students are required to apply appropriate building service system to
the selected building. The building service are including storm water
drainage, electrical system in the building, hot and cold water supply
system and sewage system. By having these system in building,
student has to produce appropriate drawings and diagrams which
include specification, symbols, legends, images, texts, etc. to describe
the planning and installation of all the building services. Provide a
solution for a specific design is necessary hence demonstrate a
comprehensive understanding of applicability to specific building
service systems int the design response to practical consideration. lastly,
student may also include specific clauses from the Uniform Building
By-Law (UBBL) or tier relevant Acts, Laws or guidelines which relates
to the proposed system started into the report.
WATER SUPPLY
Introduction

Hot and cold water system in buildings

are used for washing, cooking, cleaning
and other specialised functions. Water
services should be designed and
installed in accordance with the
recommendation of Syarikat Berkalan

recommendation

Ubbl water supply system law 89

A chase made in a wall for pipe and other service facilities shall leave the wall at the back of the
chase not less than 100 millimetres thick in eternal walls and not less than 100 millimetres thick in a
party wall and shall not be wider than 200 millimetres.

unbBL water supply system law 123

Where ducts or enclosures are provided in any building to accommodate pipes, cables or conducts
the dimensions of such ducts or enclosure shall be-

(a) adequate for the accommodation of the pipes, table or conduits and for crossing of branches and
mains together with support and fixing; and
(b) sufficiently large to permit access to cleaning eyes, stop cocks and other control there to enable
repairs, extensions and modifications to be made to each or all of the services accommodated.

UPVC class D pipes are used for communication, service & distribution pipe. It is more durable and
cost effective compared to other materials. Stailess steel and copper are used for the stop cables to
withstand impact, abrasion and heat. Copper pipes are used to channel the hot water in the system.
component/equipments

gate valve
Permit or prevent the flow of water which saves energy
and reduces total cost of ownership

HDPE water thank

High density polyethylene (HDPE) tank helps to
overcome persistent corrosion problems and specifically
for storing water before the distribution to other
appliances.

copper tubbing
To channel hot water as its surface is able to withstand
impact and abrasion

water heater
it used for water heating which is a thermodynamic
process that uses an energy source heat water above its
initial temperature.
Water mater
Measure the volume of water used by residential and
commercial building that are supplied with water by a
public water.

Stop valve
stop cocks are located at multiple fittings for easy
maintenance and repairs. It control the flow of water
through the pipes.
ELECTRIC SUPPLY
Introduction

The conveyance of electric power from a power station to consumers premises is known as electric
supply system. An electric supply system consists of three principle components viz, the power
station, the transmission lines and the distribution system. This means that the electricity transmits
from the power generating stations going through primary and secondary transmission, then the
power transmits to primary and secondary distribution.

TENAGA NASIONAL BERHAD ( TNB )

If there are any irregularities signs of meter tapmering, legal actions can be taken as provided under
the Electricity Supply Act 1990

regulation 15
Any conductor separates that is exposed to the weather, water, corrosion, undue heating or use
inflammable surroundings or in an explosive atmosphere shall be conducted or protect in such a
manner as prevent danger.

regulation 18
Any fuse or circuit breaker shall be constructed and arranged in such a manner as the break the
current when it exceeds a given value for such a sufficient time to prevent danger and constructed
guarded or place in a manner as to prevent danger of over-heating, acting or from scattering or hot
metal or other substances.
component/equipments

electricity meter
A meter designed to register the quantity of energy
consumed in a period of time. Electric meter is installed
and monitored by TNB it is mounted where the
electricity enter the building.

distribution box
Distribution board is installed inside of the building.
Components of electricity supply system which divided
electrical power leaf into subsidiary circuit.

electrical Switch
Contains final distribution points of the electrical system.
It serves various appliance such lighting, fan etc. The
placement of switch should be prohibited from the wet
area whereby the placement should be considerate. To
use one gang or two gang switched to avoid breaking
the electric circuit

S I N G L E S W I TC H E D
SOCKET
A socket outlet is the familiar item mounted on the wall
into which a plug can be inserted. A single socket outlet
is rated 13amps.
Ceiling Fan
Help in creating air breeze around our bodies and
enhance heat transfer through evaporation cooling.

recessed light
A small direct illuminance in the ceiling, recessed surface
mounted or suspended, distributing light vertically
downward.
sewage and
sanitary system
Introduction

Sewerage system, network of pipes, pumps, and force mains for the collection of the wastewater , or
sewage, from a community. Modern sewage system fall under two categories which is domestic and
industrial sewers and storm sewers. Sometime a combined system provide only one network of pipe,
mains and outfall sewers for all type of sewage and runoff.

sewage service act 1993

act 508
An act to amend and consolidate the laws relating to sewage system and sewerage service
throughout Malaysia for the purpose of improving sanitation and the environment and promoting
public health; and to provide for matters connected therewith and incidental thereto.

Street drainage and building

act 1974. section 57
No water pipe, stack pipe or down spout out used for conveying surface water from any premises
shall be used or be permitted to serve or act as ventilating shaft to any drain or sewer.

UPVC pipes are used for soil pipe, vent pipe and VPC is used for swear pipe and waste pipe as it
more durable and cost effective compared to other materials.
component/equipments

Manhole
Manhole is the top opening to an underground utility
vault used to house an acres point for making
connection, inspection, valve adjustments or performing
maintenance underground.

SUMP
Sump is a low space that collect any often- undesirable
liquid such as water or chemicals. It can also be an
infiltration basin used to managed surface runoff water
and recharge underground aquifers.

gully trap
Gully trap is constructed outside the building to care
waste water discharge from wash basin, sinks, bathroom
etc. and are connected to the nearest building drain/
sewer so the foul gases from sewer do not come to the
building.

Vent cowl
Ventilation cowl for protection against seater spray and
rain. Both supply and exhaust the smell from spreading
into the building. Cowl to be turned upwards for easy
maintenance and inspection.
rainwater/ surface
water management
Introduction

Storm water drainage system is designed to

drain excess rain and ground water from
impervious surfaces such as paved streets, car
parks, for path and etc.

drainage system by-law bulb 1984

under law 115
(1) All roofs of shall be constructed as to drain effectively to suitable and sufficient channels, gutters,
chutes or through which shall be provided in accordance with requirement of there By-law for
receiving and conveying all water which may fall and from the roof.
(2) for buildings required to install SPAH, the design and construction of SPAH shall confirm to the
following requirement :
(1) Rainwater must not flow into public water tank. Water from the public water tank
can flow into the rainwater tank subjected to it being equipped with a one way non
return valve or the over flow pipe in the rainwater tank is located at least 225mm
lower from the inlet pipe to the rainwater tank.
(2) SPAH outlet/ rainwater tanks shall be clearly marked with Not For Drinking or
Bathing
(3) Gutter shall have sufficient slope to prevent stagnant water.
(4) Rainwater pipe shall be green colour.

stormwater drainage system By-LAw

Under regulation 56, no pipe used for the carrying off rain water from any roof shall be used for the
purpose of carrying the soil or drainage from any privy or water closet of any suit-age water.

A separate drainage system is used to prevent from overloading problems.

component/equipments

Gutter
Gutter is installed on the eaves of the rood, which collect
rainwater from room of a building and diverts its aways
from the rainwater downpipes to the drain

rainwater downpipe
Downpipe are usually vertically and usually extend
down to ground level. The water is directed away from
the buildings foundation, to protect the foundation from
water drainage. The water is usually piped to a sewer,
or let into the ground.
conclusion

Throughout the project, i had learned that designing a building need to

consider many of services aspects. In order to fulfil the UBBL
requirement it the future, i believe this project gave us an introduction
of how building service run through the whole building. Next, I had
gain my knowledge on the building services which i had never learn
before. Beside that, through this project, its helps my Design Studio 4
project to get into more real life. In conclusion, i had not just gain my
knowledge on building service but also help out my design skill
through this project.
