9TH LITERATURE INTERACTIVE NOTEBOOK

You must purchase a 3 subject spiral notebook.

SECTION 1: READER/WRITER NOTEBOOK

In this section, you will complete classroom activities, take notes, and create writing drafts.

SECTION 2: VOCABULARY JOURNAL

As you read texts for this class in your SpringBoard text book or independent novels, when you come
across a word you do not know, highlight the word in the text if you can.

You are expected to record 10 words every two weeks.

Do not record technical words such as literary device terms.
Look for words you can add to your own vocabulary.

DIRECTIONS FOR YOUR JOURNAL:

1. On the first page of the vocabulary journal section in your interactive notebook, write the date
you begin your first entry.
2. Draw the graphic organizer below*.
3. For each word you choose to add to your vocabulary journal, complete a new row in the graphic
organizer.
4. Dont be afraid to use multiple lines per word! You should write at least a couple of sentences in
the final column, What effect did the author produce by choosing these words?
5. When you run out of room, simply start a new graphic organizer on the next page. When you
complete the required 10 words for this journal entry, start a new organizer on the next page.

SECTION 3: INDEPENDENT READING LOG

You are required to choose books from the classroom library to read, analyze, and review. You will
receive a grade for your reading each 6 weeks; therefore, you will read at least 3 books independently
this semester.

You will check out a book by logging in to www.booksource.com.

The classroom ID is TatumHHS. The classroom password is tatumrocks.
As you read the novel, take notice of the style or structures that draw you in to the reading.
After you have read a few chapters, you will begin recording a reading log.

DIRECTIONS FOR YOUR READING LOG:

1. Write down the title and author of the independent novel you are reading.
2. Choose and COPY one of the following graphic organizers from the back of your SpringBoard
textbook into your Independent Reading Log (use a different organizer for each novel you read):
- Cause and Effect p. 479
- Character Map p. 480
- Conflict Map p. 483
- Narrative Analysis p. 490
- Notes for Reading Independently p. 491
- Sequence of Events Time Line p. 500
- Text Structure Stairs p. 501
3. As you read the novel, carefully fill in the graphic organizer with details that will help you to
write a review of the novel.
4. After you completely finish reading the novel, review the graphic organizer you completed while
reading the novel. Form an opinion about the novel based on the content of the organizer. For
example, if you analyzed Conflict, you will write a review of whether the novel successfully
resolved a conflict and how that influenced your opinion of the novel.
5. COPY the Opinion Builder graphic organizer from p. 492 in the SpringBoard textbook into your
Independent Reading Log.
6. Organize your thoughts for writing a review of the novel by filling in the boxes for your opinion
and the evidence that supports your opinion.
7. Write the review below the graphic organizer. Begin with an opinion sentence that includes the
title and author and also talks about your evaluation of the content (ie. Conflict). Then support
your opinion with evidence and explanation.

When you finish the book, you will go to www.booksource.com to return it.
Transfer your written opinion to the review section and rate the book with one out of five stars.
