above becoming a Volunteer.
The Rotorua Hospital Chaplaincy Trust said farewell to a very loyal Volunteer Chaplaincy
Assistant on May 9th at our team meeting. Teresa Kemp, writer of beautiful stories and poems, a
prayer warrior, a team member for 12 years, has decided that it is now time to retire. Teresa is a
lot of fun, has a big heart for Pastoral care, and we miss her a whole lot!!

He knew everyone! Creatures great and small - Every person. He knew us all.
Loved us every day, because Jesus Christ was born that way.
I remembered how kind He was to me, told all the bullies to leave me be.
Carried me from door to door, no one said they owned me, so Christ set me free.
I followed Him along the sea shore, watched Him cast nets with His fishermen friends.
Once they caught so many fish, I think the nets took a week to mend.

When I sat at His feet, He gave me food to eat, never once did He chase me away.
Sometimes when the wind was cold and the sky was dark, I would tremble with fear and fright.
He would smile and say ok, you can stay I slept until I heard the Lark.

Sometimes I would play in the garden and try to catch birds on the wing.
Or, chase the rabbits in hiding and swim in the cold mountain stream.
He would smile saying off you go I am here to pray, not play.

One night, when I went to the Garden, His friends were asleep on the ground
I followed the sound of His praying and ran into the maddening crowd.
There seemed such a lot of confusion, banging and shouting, disorder everywhere.
I hid in a burrow of a rabbit no one would find me there.

When dawn came on the horizon, I searched everywhere I could see.

I looked in all the places where He would often be.
I came across the court yard where he had first found me.
There in that awful place He had been whipped and tied to a tree.
I hardly recognised Him. He was in a horrible state.
I jumped in front of the soldiers, trying to bite the ropes free.
The soldiers set about me to beat me, with sticks and whips.
But I still growled and snarled in anger until they cut Him free.
They dragged Him along with two others, and nailed Him high upon a tree.

I ran up the hill to be near Him, I howled like a storm at sea - but no one would listen to me.
Then there was the sound of silence so still, yet loud and clear,
His voice cried out through that silence My God, My God, Why have You left me here? Written by Teresa
and shared with

Three long days later, I sat at the gates of Gethsemane waiting for Him to come.
farewell.
Suddenly through the mist of the mountain, He called my name aloud
I ran to the feet of my Master, and laid my head on the ground.
A huge thank you goes to the Lions Club of Rotorua Geyserland. For the past two years now, the
Chaplaincy Trust has been involved with the Carols by Candlelight in Kuirau Park, a great family
event that is looked forward to by many in the Rotorua community. We have provided teams of
people to walk around the crowd, selling candles for gold coins, and talk to people about Chaplaincy
what a fantastic opportunity the Lions gave us. On May 5th, the lovely gentlemen from the
Geyserland Lions Club came to the Chapel to present us with a cheque which is greatly
appreciated.

Lions Clubs International is the world's largest service club organization. Its 1.4 million members are
dedicated to bettering the quality of life for the handicapped, the poor, the sick and the aged. The
motto of Lions Clubs International is WE SERVE, and the Lions Club of Rotorua Geyserland lived
this motto with enthusiasm. We wish them well as they now amalgamate with another Rotorua club
to continue to serve the community of Rotorua.

SEASON TO CHERISH THE HEART

We give thanks for the blessing of winter:
Season to cherish the heart.
To make warmth and quiet for the heart.
To make soups and broth for the heart.
To cook for the .heart and to read for the heart.
To curl up softly and nestle with the heart.
To sleep deeply and gently at one with the heart.
To dream with the heart.
To spend time with the heart.
A long, long time of peace with the heart.
We give thanks for the blessing of winter.
Season to cherish the heart. AMEN. (Michael Leunig)
Winter is the time for comfort, for good food and warmth,
for the touch of a friendly hand, and a talk beside the fire;
it is time for home. Page 3 of 10
We need your help please. In October, for one week (2nd to the 8th) we will be running a
Trailer Raffle, outside Countdown on Fenton Street, then Countdown on Fairy Springs Road.
In the past, a trailer raffle has been a wonderful way of profiling Chaplaincy; enabling us to
talk with people about something they perhaps are not aware of, and at the same time,
raising some money for our department. We have run two raffles in the past, and our
winners have been very generous people, who have given straight back to the community.
How can you help? We want to fill our trailer with new, non perishable items, anything
considered from gardening to books, from clothing to pet products, from beauty products
to soft toys to chocolates!! We would be happy to collect items (349 7853) or they can be
dropped off at the Chapel, at the Hospital.
Thanks so much for your support!!

What! Go to my neighbour? You have to be joking.

That womans a menace an absolute bore.
And hes not much better, youd need all of Jobs patience,
If you had the neighbours Im stuck with next door.

And the people behind us are really the limit!

Their taste is appalling their speech I deplore. Matthew 22 Vs 39:
I know they are lonely I think they have problems,
But you cant get involved when you are living next door. And the second is
like it: Love your
But I do think of others, I pray for the lonely,
I pray for the sick and the sad and the poor neighbour as
Ill always come out to a missionary meeting yourself.
But I simply cant stand the people next door.

Ill stand in the pulpit and preach the good tidings,

With eloquent fervour, entreat and implore.
I know the Gospel has the power of salvation,
But I cant see it making such difference next door!!

And suppose just suppose they did get converted,

And wanted to join us in worship and more!
Just think of the awkwardness and of the problems,
And what theyd expect from us, living next door.

And when I get to Heaven there is bound to be someone

Who read the Good New on some distant shore,
Through the money I sent, so they could have a Bible,
Just fancy, they dont even OWN one next door.

And perhaps when the roll call is finished up yonder,

And the harvest is gathered on Heavens bright shore,
When the Master has greeted the hosts of the ransomed,
Perhaps Hell turn around and address you once more.

And perhaps he will say, Yes, theyre here in their millions,

From cities, from jungles, from earths furthest shore.
The heathen have come, and the outcasts, and children, Page 4 of 10

But where are the people I gave you next door?

God Moment No surprises!!
Cast your cares on the Lord and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous
be shaken Psalm 55:22
Every new day begins as a clean sheet of paper. Regardless of what happened the
day before, this new one is filled with unknowns.
How do you greet each day? Do you face it with anxiety and fear because you dont
know what the day holds and you know that in the end, things are out of your
control? Or can you face the day with the comfort of faith in the God who controls
all tomorrows?
Think about these factsyou know He loves you. You know He has all things
under His control. You know He has a plan for your life. So, why cant you trust
Him to handle the day ahead?
Whatever stresses come with our new day, whatever problems you face, trust the
God who loves you. Nothing in this day will surprise Him!
Every tomorrow has two handles. We can take hold of it by the handle of anxiety or by the
handle of faith (Anonymous)

I read a quote from George Meegan the other day. He said: The hardest thing to
bear in life, I am sure, is never to have lived your dream. Having lived and survived
this adventure, I can now say, with some sadness, that the second hardest thing to
bear in life is already to have lived ones dream. Most of you wont know who he
was I certainly didnt and had to look him up on the internet.
George Meegan is. He holds the most official worlds records (8) of any European.
He is a British adventurer and alternative educator who is best known for his
unbroken walk of the Western Hemisphere from the southern tip of South America to
the northernmost part of Alaska at Prudhoe Bay. This journey on foot was of 19,019
miles (30,608 km) in 2,425 days and took place between 1977 and 1983. Wikipedia
says that the journey took 41 million steps and he wore our 12 pairs of boots.

The story of this epic transverse was chronicled in his book The Longest Walk.
Meegans very personal account of the challenges, the hardships of a man travelling
alone and without money, for years on end, across the vast sweep of our planet. And
always the extraordinary people he encountered as he walked clean through the
length of Americas. Wonderful! says Meegan today.

I found that very inspiring. Not only did he have a dream in the broadest sense, but
he had to refine it and constantly keep it before him. He had to set goals and set
more goals until he completed the dream.

On the other hand it reminds me of meeting with a family to plan a funeral. I knew
the family quite well, and the wife told me that her deceased husband was a gunner.
I made some assumptions when I heard that comment (1) He had been in the army
and (2) he served in the artillery. As I checked this out with his widow, she laughed
and corrected me. No she said, none of that was true, but he was GONNA do this
and GONNA do that. He never lived his dream, and the only thing to mark his life on
this earth is the headstone on his grave.

I believe that we were created to dream and that most of you reading this have had a
dream, and it is because of that that you are working in the hospital but what about
other dreams? I took another funeral recently where two favourite sayings of the
deceased were:

Its easy to live on the sidelines

If youre not living on the edge, youre taking up too much room.

Both of those sayings are pretty challenging but they refer to having a dream and
living life to the fullest. That of course is different for each one of us, but we must
have a dream, we must see the opportunities that life offers us, and we need to step
out, to live on the edge to experience all of life that happens. I remember the closing
words of an old song about dreams that says: You gotta have a dream, cause if you
dont have a dream, how ya gonna have a dream come true?

God Bless

Ray

CHAPLAINCY TEAM ANNUAL RETREAT
The team went on their Annual Retreat up to the Sisters of St Joseph at Mission Bay. We
had to go so far as we have outgrown local retreat centers. While the weather was
shocking, the fellowship, the teaching and the hospitality were warm. The title of the retreat
was Follow Me and I will make you go out into all the world The sessions were
based on Isaiah 49, 1-4 and consisted of about hour all together in the lovely lounge,
then half an hour of personal reflection in our rooms. The retreat concluded with a very
special communion time and time of anointing.

The Sisters were just wonderful, the food was amazing, the journey was interesting as we
drove through snow on the Mamakus, and the fun we had with one another was all about
building memories. Thanks to Jenny Lee for making our centre piece for the retreat (see
below).

Listen, O coastlands, to Me,
And take heed, you peoples from afar!
The LORD has called Me from the womb;
From the matrix of my mother He has made mention of My name.
And He has made My mouth like a sharp sword;
In the shadow of His hand He has hidden Me,
And made Me a polished shaft;
In His quiver He has hidden Me.

Many thanks to the Southern
Trust without their funding, we
would not have been able to
take the team on such a
wonderful Retreat.

Ever been to the CT Club? They have a restaurant,

a pool, bbq area they do things like bowls, fishing
and golf, and they run housie and quiz nights.

A big thanks to them, to their President Gordon

Price, who made us their Charity of Choice and
sent us a lovely donation, along with money put into
our Charity Box. We live in a great community.!!

Sunday Mornings We run a Chapel service every Sunday morning in the

hospital. These are run by 5 Volunteer Churches rostered on alternate Sundays,
and the Chaplaincy team.
How can you help? You would be welcome to assist the Church group on duty
by collecting the patients, sitting with them, and returning them to their rooms
when the service is through.
How can your Church help? By becoming one of the Churches rostered to do
this very rewarding Ministry.
The service runs from 10.30 to 11am, but to collect patients and return them
later you would need to be here at about 9.45. Why dont you come and give it a
go . it might be God!

Things to look forward to:

- The Midland Regional meeting for Health Care Chaplains in August
- The training of new team members
- The commissioning of two people who have almost finished their training.

Watch this space!!
