Finding App Inspiration
O
ur society spends a lot of time using apps. In fact, according to analytics rm App Annie, last year Americans spent what
amounted to a whole month using appsthats more than two hours every day! Personally, Ive come to rely on apps as
part of my daily routine, much like I savor my hot cup of coffee in the morning with a swirl of cream in it. Each app serves
a purpose and imparts a quiet sense of pleasure when I use it.
The study also found that we are creatures of habit, sticking to a rotation of just nine apps on a daily basis. Its no wonder then
that the iUser proles we include in each issue of iPhone Life magazine featuring real peoples Home screens are a favorite among
readers, because they offer a window into how others are using apps to conquer small tasks or pursue big aspirations. In honor of
our annual apps issue (pg. 33), I am borrowing from this idea and sharing with you the apps that are making a difference in my life
right now. While we grow fond of the apps we use, we can all benet from a little app inspiration now and then.
My App Routine
theSkimm (Free)
This app lets me access the Skimms daily newsletter, which offers up the days head-
lines in a way that makes you feel like youre having witty banter with a friend.
Mealime (Free)
Mealime is the perfect companion for the busy person who likes to eat well. Each
weekend it generates a meal plan and grocery list for me, so I can spend my time
having fun.
Trello (Free)
Trello helps me collaborate on big picture work projects with coworkers and move to-
ward goals one task at a time.
Moments (Free)
I discovered Moments during a vacation in Mexico and keep coming back to it. It lets
you privately share pictures with friends so you have joint access to photos from par-
ties and trips without oversharing on Facebook.
Kindle (Free)
Ever since I joined a book club in the spring, I try to read a little each evening. If I buy
Kindle books that offer Whispersync, I can alternate between reading and listening. I
love having that exibility.
Pocket Casts ($3.99)
I like listening to podcasts while I cook dinner. Pocket Casts makes it easy to discover
new favorite shows and has a helpful setting that speeds playback by trimming out
silences between words.

The easiest way to copy or save a picture from a text
is by long pressing the photo (just rest your nger
on the photo). From the menu that pops up, choose
either Copy or Save (save if you want to keep the
image in your Photos app).
To email the picture, youll need to either paste the

Start by long pressing in the body of the email. A
black menu will pop up. Choose Paste if you copied
the image. If you saved the photo, tap the arrow
on the right and choose Insert Photo or Video and

USE APPLES BUILT-IN SLEEP TOOLS
If youre looking to get more shut-eye, a great place to

start is with Apples built-in tools on your iPhone. Apples
Bedtime and Night Shift features have helped me to break
out of a cycle of sleeplessness, make a plan, and gather the

took a four-month trip to the island of Hawaii last October for a university research program. During that time, my iPhone
7 had some close calls with water, rocks, sand, heat, and yes, even a volcano. We risk our comfort, our sanity, and some-
times our safety to take these adventures. Having been through this adventure with my iPhone 7, I came back to the
mainland with a better understanding of what rugged iPhone gear I could have brought with me. Here are the top ve
rugged iPhone accessories I will bring on my next adventure and recommend you pack too.

Catalyst Case for iPhone 7
($79.99)
A reliable protective case is the rst line of defense
to keep your iPhone safe on serious treksand the
Catalyst Case is one of the most respected on the
market. The IP68 rated Catalyst is submersible up to
30 feet, adding a signicant boost of protection to
the iPhone 7, which is submersible up to 1 meter for
30 minutes. When traveling near or through rivers in
Hawaii, I found myself wishing I had chosen a better
case. There is a difference between being 99 percent
sure your iPhone is safe in its protective case and 100
percent sure. To test the Catalyst, I ran the iPhone 7
under water in my sink from every angle, took it in the
shower while playing music, and shook it in a ve-gal-
lon bucket. Even after taking a fairly signicant beating,
my iPhone 7 remained dry and unscathed. I even test-
ed the Catalyst case with coconut oil. Unlike my Spigen
case, the Catalyst maintained a grippy feel. The Catalyst
did not allow any dirt, sand, or mud to enter either, and
once rinsed, it did not allow any debris to stick around.
The Catalyst case also claims to protect against drop
damage. I tested this out in a few different ways: For
starters, I stuffed my phone in my backpack with books
and ofce supplies and then dropped the backpack from
about 10 feet. I also threw my phone down a ight of stairs,
cartwheeled it across some pavement, and mashed it into a
steel grate. The Catalyst Case itself was still in fair condition after this,
and my iPhone remained unharmed thanks to Catalysts war tank of a rubberized
shell and bumpers. The protective iPhone 7 case adds bulk for sure and is one
of the most expensive protective case options. However, its worth it for me, as I
forego phone insurance in lieu of a strong case.
Olloclip Active Lens Set for iPhone 7/7 Plus

($119.99)
The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus already have the best
smartphone cameras available. Olloclips high-quality
lens collection builds on the strength of the iPhones
camera, providing users with even greater versatility.
I was able to try out Olloclips Active Lens Set from
its newest line of iPhone camera attachments. The set
offers a 2x telephoto lens and a 155-degree ultra-wide
lens. Carrying Olloclips lenses with me was no inconve-
nience at all, and the benets of being able to easily cap-
ture wide-angle shots and zoom in on subjects are worth
it. I should note that the Olloclip mount is a very snug t
though and does not work with a case on. It took me ve
minutes to remove the Catalyst Case and safely secure
the Olloclip. Olloclip offers a special case to solve this
problem, but if you want to continue using your favorite
case, be prepared for setup to take a little extra time. The
mount also blocks the ash, so plan for that as well.
Since I have the iPhone 7, not the Plus, I enjoyed the
clarity of the 2x telephoto zoom. There is a marked differ-
ence between the 2x zoom with the lens versus digitally
zooming in within the Camera app. The 2x zoom lens is
much clearer. With the wide-angle lens, I found my nature
shots to be richer and more professional looking. If the
iPhone is your main camera, these lenses are certainly an
investment worth considering.
UE ROLL 2 Wireless Portable Bluetooth Speaker
($99.99)
A portable outdoor speak is crucial for any adventure, whether you nd yourself on the road, in a tent, or on the beach. Music
can change moods, inspire dance parties, and pull people together in harmony. Knowing all of this, I wish I had taken the Roll
2 from Ultimate Ears on my trip to Hawaii. Not only can you pair this small but loud Bluetooth speaker with other UE speakers
to create a chain of sound sources, but it offers a Bluetooth range of up to 100 feet and comes with a built-in bungee cord for
mounting the speaker to just about anything. Ive been a bass player for over 20 years, so the rst thing I noticed was the UE
Roll 2s impressive bass. UEs iPhone app allows you to customize EQ, easily control volume, manage your alarms, power the
device on and off, and monitor the speakers battery life. The speaker is a rubberized UFO-like disc that is a little smaller than the
average hand. Ultimate Ears even includes an inatable oatie so the Roll 2 can join your next pool party. Adventurers will be
hard-pressed to nd a small, waterproof, wireless speaker with high-volume sound clarity like the UE Roll 2.
ClimateCase 700 Series

($39.99)
If your next trip requires cruising through the sun a little closer to the equa-
tor or stomping through arctic conditions, no need to worry about extreme
temperatures damaging your iPhone. After 15 minutes below 32F or above
95F, the iPhone powers down to stay protected. If Im counting on my
iPhone to capture media or to make an emergency phone call, however,
Im going to want an insulated iPhone case to keep the temperature of
my lifeline at a healthy level.
The ClimateCase is a multi-layered thermal phone case made
of nylon, neoprene, and a patented gel. Before heading out
in hot temperatures, just put the case in the refrigerator for
four hours. If its going to be pretty chilly out, microwave it
instead to turn it into a heated pocket. The ClimateCase
will regulate the iPhones temperature up or down in two
minutes or less. When it comes down to it, preventing
this kind of hardware failure is an easy step, and it may
be a step that saves the day.
Adventure can happen anywhere. And as long as we
continue to put our iPhones in risky situations, we will
have to consider how to protect them against disaster.
