Rational numbers

Why learn this?
O
There are many everyday situations where we do not work with whole
numbers. Fractions are a way of expressing parts of whole things,
N
amounts or quantities. They are important in everyday situations such as
IO
measuring, cooking, shopping, telling the time and sport. Did you know
that approximately 14 of the population of Australia lives in Victoria?

Comparing fractions
If we cut a block into 4 pieces, then 1 piece is less than 2 pieces. This means that 14 of the
block is smaller than 24 .
Fraction walls, or number lines, are useful tools when comparing fractions. The
following figure shows an example of a fraction wall.

If the numerators are the same, the smaller fraction is the one with the larger

Fractions that do not have the same denominator or numerator can be compared by using
equivalent fractions.
The fractions need to be rewritten so that they have the same denominator.

It has been seen in an earlier chapter that multiplication by a whole number can be
Interactivity thought of as repeated addition.
Repeated addition
int-2738 For example, 5 6 = 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 30
The same principle applies to multiplying a whole number by a fraction.
For example, 15 6 = 15 + 15 + 15 + 15 + 15 + 15 = 1 15
To multiply two fractions we need to use an alternative approach.
To multiply fractions, multiply the numerators and then multiply the denominators.
It is important to note that the denominators do not need to be the same.

Simplifying ratios
Equivalent ratios are when the numbers in a ratio are multiplied or divided by the same
number.
For instance, the ratios 2 : 3 and 4 : 6 are equivalent, as the second ratio can be obtained
by multiplying both numbers of the first ratio by 2.
Ratios 10 : 5 and 2 : 1 are also equivalent, as the second ratio is obtained by dividing both
numbers of the first ratio by 5.
Ratios are usually written in simplest form, that is, reduced to lowest terms. This is
achieved by dividing each number in the ratio by the highest common factor (HCF).

4 Add the numerators. = 356
5 Simplify the answer. = 5 56
LY
6 Check the answer by adding the whole 313 + 212 > 3 + 2
numbers to find an approximation. 313 + 212 > 5
The approximation shows
N
that the answer we obtain
O
should be greater than 5.
N
Change mixed numbers into improper fractions.
IO
Simplify fractions by dividing, either vertically or diagonally, by their highest common
factor. AT
Multiply the numerators. Then multiply the denominators.
Simplify the answer if possible.

The gymnasium realises that the number of daily sales will vary, depending
particularly on the weather. The machine is stacked with 60 bottles at the start of each
day. The supplier advises that, because of electricity costs and other running expenses,
the machine is not worthwhile having unless at least three-quarters of the bottles are
sold on average 2 days per week. Round these sales to the nearest 5 and analyse the
LY
figures to determine whether the gymnasium should keep the vending machine.

There are 15 pairs of equivalent fractions in this game that makes 30 cards.
One of the fractions of each pair must be in simplest form.
For example, 13 and 12
4
are an acceptable pair, but 10
30
4
and 12 are not.
N
Fractions dont have to be proper fractions. Equivalent mixed numbers and improper fractions are
allowed.

2 Using the above information, write down the 15 pairs of fractions that will be a part of your memory game.
When the game is packaged for sale, additional information accompanies the cards. This information
