Brief Description
Much has been published about Islam and ethics. Often, however, such books or articles
have focused on the abstract and philosophical rather than the applied. Concurrently, a
deep divide has occurred between what Islam asks of its adherents and what many of
them abide by and apply in terms of ethics. For example, Muslims represents 23% of the
world population (Pew Research Center, 2013), but only one Muslim-majority country ranks
among the top 25 most ethical countries in the world, and 5 out of the ten most corrupt
countries in the world are in fact Muslim-majority countries (Transparency International
Corruption Perceptions Index, 2015). As a result of the above gaps in the application of
Islamic ethics, several prominent Muslim thinkers (e.g. Taha Jabir Al Alwani, Tariq Ramadan)
have been advocating for a fresh reading of the earliest and most important Islamic
sources including both the Quran and the Seerah of the Prophet (s). That re-reading
should also contextualize some of the verses in the Quran itself as well as the teachings
and sayings of the Prophet Muhammad, and should occur in parallel with a reading of the
world around us.
The aim of this book, then, is to synthesize and advance both theoretical and empirical
research about applied Islamic ethics within various disciplines such as business (e.g.
economics, finance, marketing, accounting, and human resource development), the
sciences (physical, social, life, etc.), media, the law, politics, and environmental ecology. In
their emphasis on wasatiyya or balance, the key primary sources of Islamic teachings, the
Quran and the Sunnah weave core ethical principles such as adl (balance), qist (justice),
amana (trust) and ihsan (benevolence) within Islamic ethics. This book will therefore
provide a broad base for theory development while emphasizing practical approaches
towards key fields of knowledge within the context of Islamic ethics.

Case Studies of Applied Ethics in Various Fields (political and social ethics;

The students of Applied Sciences & Islamic Studies Programme are a big part of the Academy of
Islamic Studies, University of Malaya as a whole. Since its inception in 2002, many challenges have
been overcome. Today, the Applied Sciences & Islamic Studies Programme has become stronger
with a streamlined structure of studies that has been established. Together with dedicated lecturers
and staff, many improvements have been made in order to ensure that the Applied Sciences &
Islamic Studies Programme is capable of producing knowledgeable and competitive graduates in the
areas of Islamic studies and science.
Until the year 2014, nine generations of students of Applied Science & Islamic Studies Programme
(2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014) have successfully graduated. They are
now working in various professions in the public sector which include positions such as science
officer, diplomatic and administrative officer, J-Qaf teacher, instructor, lecturer and many more.
Others are with the private sector with some joining well-renowned companies such as Petronas,
IBM and Felda Global Ventures.
There are also many graduates from this programme who have chosen to further their studies.
Some pursue their postgraduate studies in the science stream, others in Islamic studies, and there
are also those who chose to further their studies by integrating Islamic studies and science. It is
interesting to note that aside from local universities, graduates from this programme have also
successfully furthered their studies overseas in countries such as the United Kingdom and Japan.
The success of these graduates will hopefully be continued by the present students of Applied
Sciences & Islamic Studies Programme in the years to come.
Hence, it is hoped that Applied Sciences & Islamic Studies Programme will attract more students as
an effort to produce a generation of Muslim scientists that are knowledgeable in both Islamic studies
and science.
I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation to the Management of the Academy
of Islamic Studies, University of Malaya for their concern and effort in developing the Applied
Sciences & Islamic Studies Programme up until today. My heartfelt congratulations to all graduates
of the Applied Sciences & Islamic Studies Programme. All the very best to all future graduates of this
programme.
Thank you to all those who have been involved in establishing and strengthening the Applied
Sciences & Islamic Studies Programme. May the blessings of Allah SWT be with you.
