OPERATING PROCEDURE

1.1. Start-up

1.1.1. Prepare the solution by mixing up 70% ethanol and water to form 5L of 50%
solution of ethanol.
1.1.2. Ensure the cleanliness of the heating chamber and other parts.

1.2. Experimental Procedure

1.2.1. Fill in the material inside the heating chamber.

1.2.2. Plug in the electrical plug or socket. Turn on the switch of the heater.
1.2.3. Set the heater to 8.
1.2.4. Open the water valve in order to cool down and condense the evaporated gas from
the mixture.
1.2.5. Run the heater until the desired temperature is reached. After which, run for 30
minutes.
1.2.6. During the 30 minutes run, adjust the knob in accordance to the temperature
measured and the working temperature desired.

1.3. Shutdown

1.3.1. Turn off the knob and the switch. Pull the plug out of the electrical outlet.
1.3.2. Close the water inlet valve.
1.3.3. Collect the material out of the heating chamber and the condensed collection
chamber. Measure the volume.
1.3.4. Clean the chamber by washing and distilling with water only. Then, washing with
water.

1.4. Evaluation

1.4.1. Further distill the solution collected from the heating chamber and the condensed
collection chamber separately using rotavap or ordinary laboratory distillation
setup in bench scale. Temperature of distillation should be at boiling point of
ethanol with tolerance of 1 deg C.
1.4.2. Measure the ethanol distilled from each solution. Calculate the water fraction in the
solution and ethanol fraction.
