injection should be given in the middle of the triangle.

There is a danger of rnjuring the sciatic nerve and the presence of major

Describe the Z track method for IM iniection

Z-trackis the safest and most comfortable technique for giving IM injections.

Prevents seepage off med into the needle track and reduces the pain and
discomfort.

With the Z track a clean needle is attached prior to insertion. Needle should be
minimum of 1%inches.

Gentle pressure maybe applied after injection.

I.M. Iniection Sites

The nurse must be familiar with the most commonly used I.M. injection sites: the Ventrogluteal,
dorsogluteal, deltoid, and vastus lateralis. To assist the nurse, the following illustrations identifi,
each injection site and its anatomic landmarks.

Ventrogluteal
Used for all patients, this site is desirable because it is not only relatively free of large nerves and
adipose tissue, but is also remote from the rectum (which minimizes the risk of contamination).

For this site, position the patient on the back or side

5
Dorsogluteal (Upper Outer Quadrant) =\
Commonly used for adults, the dorsogluteal site is not used for infants and children under age 3
because these muscles are not well developed.

Position the patient flat on the stomach with the toes pointed inward and the arms apart and
flexed toward the head.

Deltoid
Not usually used because the muscle is small and can accommodate only small doses of
medications, the deltoid also is near the radial nerve.

For this site, seat the patient upright or have the patient lie flat with arms apart.
