Yunting and Specific Gravity of a liquid

OBJECTIVE:
To determine the unit weight, mass density, and specific gravity of a liquid.

APPARATUS:
1. Graduated Cylinder
2. Beaker
3. Weighing Scale

INTRODUCTION:

The unit weight (also known as the specific weight) is the weight per unit volume of
a material. Discussion of specific weight refers to pure water. When impurities are found
in water, specific weight is affected.

The mass density of a substance is its mass per unit volume.

Specific gravity is the ratio of the density or unit weight of the liquid to the density
or unit weight of a standard.

The mass density and unit weight are just different ways of expressing density
which is the quantity of matter contained in a unit volume of the substance.

PROCEDURE:

1. Weigh the beaker. 2. Pour the liquid in the

beaker at a specified volume.

3. Measure the weight and

volume of the liquid.
Wt. of liquid = (Wt. of apparatus
with liquid) - (Wt. of apparatus)

4. Record data and solve for the

required

Weight of liquid 45 g Specific gravity 0.75

ANALYSIS OF DATA:

With the data obtained from conducting the experiment, the results showed that
cooking oil is less dense but is more viscous compared to water. With a constant low
viscosity that is only dependent on the condition of fluid, oil is considered a Newtonian
fluid.

RICABLANCA
The unit weight, mass density and specific gravity of a liquid can be determined by
volumetric method using the formula for each property. In this experiment, it was proven
that cooking oil is less dense than water with its mass density equal to 0.75 g/cc
compared to 1 g/cc of water.

It was observed that cooking oil has low viscosity and a yellowish color. It also has a
subtle odor and non-volatile unlike kerosene.

MESINA
It has been observed that cooking oil is a low viscous liquid but is more viscous
than water. The density of the oil varies with each type and temperature. This ranges
from 0.91 to 0.93 g/ cm3 between the temperature of 15 and 25 . It is less
dense than water which has a 1.00 g/ml of density. The Unit weight of oil can be solved
through dividing its weight over its volume. It doesnt have a foul odor unlike other
liquids like vinegar and kerosene. The density on the other hand can be solved through
dividing its mass by its volume. Lastly, the specific gravity of a cooking oil can be solved
through the dividing the unit weight of the cooking oil by the unit weight of water.

YUNTING
The unit weight, mass density and specific gravity of any liquid can be determined
by simply measuring the weight of the liquid, volume and using its corresponding
formulas.
Cooking oil doesnt have foul odor unlike other liquids used by other groups such as
kerosene and vinegar. It is also easier to conduct the experiment with oil as the liquid
compared to gas and kerosene because it doesnt evaporate easily. It is also observed
from the experiment that cooking oil is less dense than water and has low viscosity.
