1. Define Organizational behavior (OB).

Organization behavior is the study of behaviors and attitudes of people in an

organization. After all human behaviors and attitudes determine effectiveness of any
organization. The approach used in studying OB is the system approach. In other words,
this approach interprets people-organization relationships in terms of the whole person,
whole group, whole organization, and whole social system. Its purpose is to build better
relationships by achieving human objectives, organizational objectives, and social
objectives. In this paper we propose to study leadership, motivation and organizational
conflict, as among the most pressing issues in organizational behavior. Further, we shall
discus how these issues can be addressed.
Organizational behavior as an interdisciplinary field dedicated to better
understanding and managing people at work. By definition, it is both research and
application oriented.(Kinichi/Fugate p5)
It is an academic designation focused on managing people within and between
individual, group, and organizational levels. It is the study of human behavior in
organizations. It is an academic discipline devoted to understanding individual and group
behavior, interpersonal processes, and organizational dynamics. (Schermerhorn et al p11)

2. Describe the two primary outcomes in the study of OB.

The two primary outcomes in the study of Organizational Behavior are (1) job
satisfaction and (2) the task performance.
The first is task performance, it is the quantity and quality of work produced or
the services provided by an individual, team, or work unit, or organization as a whole.
Task performance includes employee behaviours that are directly involved in the
transformation of organizational resources into the goods or services that the organization
produces.
The second is job satisfaction an attitude reflecting a persons positive and
negative feelings toward a job, co-workers, and the work environment. (Schermerhorn,
Hunt & Osborn 1997; Robbins, 2001).
It is an affective or emotional response toward various facets of ones job.
(Kinicki/Fugate, 2012, p161)

3. Identify the factors that influence the two primary OB outcomes.

(1) Job Satisfaction (Schermerhorn, Hunt & Osborn 1997; Robbins, 2012).
a. The quality of supervision- technical help and social support
b. Relationship with co-workers- social harmony and respect
c. Work Itself- responsibility, interest, and growth
d. Promotion opportunities- chances for further advancement
e. Pay- adequacy of pay and perceived equity vis--vis others

(2) Task Performance /Organizational Commitment

a. Job-related factors
b. Employment opportunities
c. personal characteristics
d. positive relationships
e. organizational structure and
f. management style

*Fulfillment
*discrepancy
*value attainment
*equity
*trait/genetic components

4. Why firms that are good in OB tend to be more profitable?

Committed human resources are organizations greatest assets, in Organizational
behavior a commitment to ethical behavior, importance of human capital, emphasis on
teams, the growing influence of information technology, new workforce expectations,
changing notions of careers, and concern for sustainability and its contingency approach,
by recognizing that management practices fit the situation that tends them to be more
profitable.
