STEEL ERECTION - APPENDIX B
BOLT INSTALLATION - GENERAL

B1.0 Scope
This Appendix, together with the Foster Wheeler North America Corp. (FW) Job Specification for
Structural and Miscellaneous Steel Erection, governs the bolt installation for structural steel for
FW.

B2.0 References
See Section 2 of the FW Erection Specification.

B3.0 General
B3.1 The type of joint specified determines the tightening and inspection requirements for
fasteners. This information will be shown on the FW Design Drawings or Documents.
B3.2 Deleted
B3.3 Erector shall provide full time bolting inspectors to inspect the bolting operation. One
inspector shall be provided for each crew that is snugging or pretensioning bolts. Inspectors
shall perform inspection in accordance with the appropriate Appendix for the installation
technique.

B4.0 Snug-Tightened Joints

B4.1 The snug tight condition is defined as the tightness that is attained with a few hits of an
impact wrench or the full effort of an ironworker using an ordinary spud wrench to bring
the connected plies into firm contact.
B4.2 The definition of firm contact is the condition that exists on a faying surface when the
plies are solidly seated against each other, but not necessarily in continuous contact.
B4.3 Proper snug-tightening of the joint is necessary, whether the joint is specified as Snug-
Tightened, Pre-Tensioned or Slip-Critical.
B4.4 For joints specified as Pre-Tensioned or Slip-Critical, properly snug-tightening the joint is
the critical first step prior to pre-tensioning the bolts.
B4.5 The most critical aspect of snug-tightened joints is that there are no gaps remaining
between the layers of steel adjacent to the bolt holes.
B4.6 In the snug condition, and even in the fully pre-tensioned condition, there may be cases
where gaps remain between the steel plies. Gaps along the edges of parts may be
caused by member tolerances, misalignment, shear distortion, welding and/or heat
distortion. These types of gaps along the edges of joints are acceptable. Gaps between
the plies adjacent to the holes are not acceptable.
B4.7 The use of a thin feeler gage, such as a machinists rule, may be used to verify that no
gaps are present around the holes even though gaps may exist at the edges. For large,
multi-row bolt patterns, individual bolts may be removed to check if gaps exist between
the steel at the holes. A small tape measure with a thin hook at the end shall be used for
this check. Bolts may be reinstalled provided there is no visible damage to the bolt.

B5.0 Pre-tensioned Joints

B5.1 Although a large number of building connections can be specified as only snug-

tightened, some joints are required to be pre-tensioned beyond the snug-tight condition
in accordance with the requirements of the AISC Code and/or RCSC specification.

B6.0 Slip-Critical joints

B6.1 There is no difference, as far as bolt installation is concerned, between Pre-Tensioned
joints and Slip-Critical joints. Both require the bolts to be fully pre-tensioned in
accordance with an approved procedure.
B6.2 The difference between the two types of joints occurs in the treatment or finishing of the
contact surfaces. Pre-Tensioned joints require no special treatment of the contact
surfaces, while Slip-Critical joints require special treatment of the contact surfaces.
There are three classes of contact surfaces for slip-critical joints.
B6.2.1 Class A surfaces consist of clean mill scale and blast cleaned surfaces with
Class A coatings.
B6.2.2 Class B surfaces consist of blast-cleaned surfaces and blast-cleaned
surfaces with Class B coatings.
B6.2.3 Class C surfaces consist of hot dip galvanized and roughened surfaces.
B6.3 The bolt pretensions shown in Table 46A9B-2 are applicable to all Pre-Tensioned and Slip-
Critical joints. It is not applicable to Snug-Tightened joints.

B7.0 Equivalent Welds

Where bolts cannot be installed as shown on the FW Design Drawings due to misalignment of
holes, inaccessibility or other reason, bolts may be replaced with equivalent welds as required by
AISC specification.

B8.0 Inspection
Inspection of bolts shall be performed according to RCSC specification.

B9.0 Submittals
Erector shall submit to the FW Site Manager a procedure for the Pre-Installation Verification Testing,
Tightening, and Inspection for the installation of the structural bolts.

B10.0 Jobsite Storage

B10.1 Bolts for use in Pre-tensioned and Slip-Critical joints shall be kept separate by lot. Mixing
of bolts and nuts, even of the same diameter, grade and length, is not permitted until

readied for installation.

B10.2 Galvanized bolts and nuts will be provided in separate containers to be used as to make
up sets. Galvanized bolts and nuts shall be kept together and used together as an
assembly.
B10.3 All fastener components (bolts, nuts, and washers) shall be kept in separate containers
protected from exposure to rain, snow, dew and other forms of moisture until they are
required for erection. Plastic covers placed over cans of boxes on the ground is not an
acceptable means of protection.

B11.0 Lubrication
B11.1 Black Fasteners
B11.1.1 All black (plain) bolts, nuts and washers shall have a lubricant present when
installed.
B11.1.2 Should any of the bolts, nuts and/or washers show evidence of rust, the rust
shall be cleaned from the surface of the fastener component and the
component re-lubricated.
B11.1.3 Dirt, sand, grit and all other foreign material shall be cleaned off the fastener
components prior to installation, with re-lubrication when necessary.
B11.1.4 Black fasteners shall be oily to the touch prior to being installed.
B11.1.5 Only lubricants specifically manufactured for use on black bolts shall be used.
If the adequacy of a lubricant is uncertain, torque testing in a Skidmore-
Wilhelm (or similar) device shall be used to provide an indication of the
lubricants adequacy.
B11.1.6 If required, lubricant shall be placed on the threads of the bolt, the threads of
the nut and the inside face of the nut.

B11.2 Galvanized Fasteners

B11.2.1 All galvanized nuts shall have a lubricant present when installed. It is not
necessary for the bolt threads to have a lubricant present.
B11.2.2 Dirt, sand, grit and all other foreign material shall be cleaned off the fastener
components prior to installation.
B11.2.3 Galvanized nuts that are properly lubricated will be dry to the touch.
B11.2.4 Only lubricants specifically manufactured for use on galvanized nuts shall be
used. If the adequacy of a lubricant is uncertain, torque testing in a
Skidmore-Wilhelm (or similar) device shall be used to provide an indication of
the lubricants adequacy.
B11.2.5 If required, lubricant shall be placed on the threads of the nut and the inside
face of the nut.

B12.0 Requirements for Washers

B12.1 As a minimum all bolt assemblies shall have two standard round washers, one under the
head of the bolt and one under the nut. This permits the bolts to be tightened from either
end.

STEEL ERECTION - APPENDIX B
BOLT INSTALLATION - GENERAL

B13.0 Systematic Tightening

B13.1 Bolts shall be snugged and pre-tensioned in a systematic manner. A pattern shall be
chosen for snugging the joint so that the joint is drawn together without undue bending of
any of the connection parts, achieving the condition of snug tight.
B13.1 The joint shall be snugged first, starting at the most rigid part and proceeding toward the
free edges. In a joint with a single or double row of bolts, this would be where the steel is
already in contact, working toward the end where the steel may not be in contact. If there
is solid contact between the steel at all locations, the direction of snugging does not
matter. In a bolt pattern with several rows, such as a large web splice plate in a girder,
the bolts in the center of the joint shall be snugged first, then proceed to work toward the
free edges of the plate.
B13.2 After the joint has been completely snugged, pre-tensioning of the bolts shall follow the
same systematic pattern used for snugging.

B14.0 Bolt Stickout

B14.1 Bolt stickout is the amount of thread sticking out beyond the face of the nut after
tightening.
B14.2 The RCSC Specification requires that the end of the bolt be at least flush with the face of
the nut. It is not permitted for the bolt end to be below the face of the nut after tightening
is completed. If the bolt end is below the face of the nut after tightening remove the bolt
and replace it with the next longer bolt or remove the extra washer from the end opposite
the end being tightened.
B14.3 The maximum thread stickout after tightening is 5 threads. If more than 5 threads
stickout after tightening check the stickout with a loose bolt with the nut run up to the bolt
thread runout. If this test indicates that the nut may have met the thread runout remove
the bolt and either replace with the next shorter bolt or add an extra washer.

B15.0 Reuse of Bolts

B15.1 High Strength Bolts shall not be reused and shall be immediately removed from the work
area.
B15.2 Bolts that have been installed to the snug tight condition, but subsequently loosened
when adjacent bolts are snug tightened, are not considered reused bolts. Similarly, bolts
that are touched up in the pre-tensioning process are not considered reused. To be
considered as reuse, the bolt must be deliberately loosened.
