The Ministry of Defence and UFO"s.

We have already looked at the Involvement or the Armed Services of the
United Kingdom In the UFO phenomenon;for that reason we may "Jump"
Slightly ahead of previous sectlons.Baslcally,lt was only after the first

"flying saucer" Groups appeared In the UK (1953/1954) that any sort of
publicity was given to Air Ministry statements on UFO"s.There was
!!2.Justlflable reason for It,butthose Groups seem to Immedlat’ely have
. decided that there was a cover up,that IIthose In authority know more

What we see when surveying the literature from this period Is simply
"copy cat" behaviour.British Groups and Individuals were simply "copying
the AmeriCan way" In dealing with Officialdom.The Air Ministry seemed to
be doing nothing publlcally,therefore,they reasoned there must be
somethlng’golng on "behind closed doors".The fictional accounts ’of RAF
studies and Air Ministry Departments seem to have been naively believed
(If It appeared In a newspaper,surely It was true~..w ll)by theU FO
Groups.People just could not accept that. the Air’Ministry wer,e not
conducting "Blue Book type Investigations" Into UFO"s,and after the
allegation that an RAF study ended with a "T.op Secret" report the
questions and allegations began again.
In April 1955 fo.llowlng the RAF "study" statement,the then Under
Secret of State for Alr,the Hon George Ward (later to become Lord
Ward) was asked by Member of Parliament,Major Patrick Wall,whether
the Air Ministry Inquiry had been completed and If sO,he ask.ed,dld Mr
" Ward prop.ose to have the report publlshed,Mr Ward replled:-
"Reports of Flying saucers,as well as other abnormal objects In the
sky,are Investigated as they come In,but there has been no formal
Inqulry.About 90% of the reports have been found to relate t .

meteors,balloons,flares and many other objects.The fact that the.other

10% areunexplatned need be attributed to nothing more than a sl’nlster
lack of data"
Mr Ward was telling us what It took almost thirty years to prove.that
there was no’Official RAF or Air Ministry Inquiry.The only query wati the
10% flgure,the official one had been 5%..obvlously Mr Ward was the
latest qualified figure (1..3).
In the Septemberl ctober,1966 edition of Flying Saucer Rev,lew (FSR)
appeared an artlcl by a Mr John Pitt,dealing with the Air Ministry and

UFO.s.ln this artlcl Mr Pitt stated:-

Wightman ’visited e Air Ministry In March 1966.Thelr Intention was to
find out Just what as happening to these 1,600 reports.The PRO they
spoke to,denied t ere was any seperate branch In the Ministry dealing
speclncallyiWlth U O.s and nothing else.The two men felt that this was a
contradlctloo,afte all...the Sunday Dispatch had said there was onel

Now Mr Pitt claim to have worked In a branch of Intelligence (notthis
mag folks!!) at the War Ofnee,surely then,he should have reallsed that
the DDI (Tech);a p rson,not a Department.Aiso,he should have known

Leslle,had met Mr ard shortly bef,ore he (Ward)had become
Parllamnetary Un er Secretary for Air.However It was not untl11963,after
Mr Ward hadretlr d from Politics that Leslie,revealed the contents of a
letter from"the P,ol Iclan.This letter makes very Interesting readlng,Mr
