employees in a certain work place. Also, It will tackle about on how these leadership

styles affects and influences in coping with the employees work productivity on selected

companies in Quezon, City.

Introduction

Leadership style is the form or way of providing directions, executing plans, and

motivating people. In employees perspective, leadership includes the total pattern of

explicit and implicit actions performed by the leader. (Newstorm., David 1993). In an

organization, group, and company. Leadership style is a must. It promotes stability,

vision, creativity, order, problem-solving, and structure a system in an organization.

(Darft, R.L 2006) There are different styles of leadership that may use in a certain

situation toward to accomplish a specific goal and objectives. Thats why, styles also

determined as relatively combine with high consideration and structure giving more

emphasis to the employee performance and the work productivity as a whole

(Newstrom,. John W.) Leadership styles are not something to be tried on like so many

suits, to see which fits. Rather, they should be adapted to the particular requirements of

the people involved and the particular challenges facing the organization. (Goleman.,

Daleman) An organization who executes a style in leadership according to the needs of

nature of work may have chances to seek objectives enthusiastically. It can be a factor

that can binds a group together to improve the productivity and performance directly to

toward goals. Therefore, Efficient effort is required to understand and navigate through
these changes in organization especially in various leadership styles is adequate to run

an organization effectively (http: www.shodhganga.inflibnet.ac.in)

Leadership styles also called management style, includes the overall method of

leadership. Every organization possess their style of leadership in order to increase the

employees belongingness and performance. (www.rpi.edu). And one factor to be

affected by that possession is work productivity. Work Productivity is critical to every

employee to success in work. One factor that may be affected by this possession is the

employee disengagement by not working at full productive capacity (www.forbes.com).

If youre not performing as efficiently or effectively as others, your long-term job

prospects could be in trouble. Unless, the management has add to their plans to the

employees to improve productivity by putting them in a more productive mindset and

workplace. (Victor., Lipman Forbes 2013)

Background of the Study

For the passed half decade, the term leadership has been conducted countless

studies and research, especially in the field of management and organizational

development.

Theoretical Framework

The researchers used the Contingency Model Theory by Fred Fiedler created in the

mid-1960, a scientist who studied the personality and characteristics of leaders. The

model proposed that effective employee performance depended upon the proper match

by which a leaders ability to lead is contingent upon situational factors that include the
leaders capabilities, preferred style, competency. (Igbal N, Anwar S, Haider N 2015). In

every success of a certain organization is a function and unity of the subordinates

whether it is performing by an individual or by group. Effective and leadership relies not

only the style of the organization has but also on how to control the overall situation.

There must be a role leader-member relationship where theyre helping each other to

improve and have development in each party. Especially in terms of productivity and the

level of employee performance exhibiting in his nature of work. Contingency Theory

models has differences but shares common thread, states that effective leadership is

depends on the situation, tasks, people involved and on how the management or

leaders may be able to cure. This theory emphasized the leaders personality, or

psychological disposition fits situation where employees are closely supervised. Those

factors include tasks, personality of the leader, and the composition of the group that is

meant to be led by the management. Fiedler argues that leader effectiveness is

dependent on the interaction of the leaders style and characteristics of the situation

defined as leader-member relations, task structure and leader position power.

According to Fielder, the three characteristics in a situation when combined will permit

classification of three situations namely:

1. Very Favourable Situation: when all three critical elements are high.

2. Intermediate Favourableness: a condition when some of the situational

characteristics are poor / low and others are good / or high.

3. Unfavourable Situation: a situation where all three situational components are low

or poor. (Peretemode., Otaroghene 2012 p.13-17)

As defined, This theory uses an approach entitled Least Preferred Co-Worker (LPC)

Scale. LPC Scale is use to determine the type of worker the leader least like working

with and emphasizes the capacity of the leader to dispose a role and trait to lead.

The figure below shows the example of LPC Scale:

Pleasant 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 Unpleasant

Friendly 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 Unfriendly

Rejecting 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 Accepting

Supportive 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 Hostile

Boring 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 Interesting

Considerate 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 Inconsiderable

Figure 1

Under the Fiedlers Contingency Theory is the approach called Least Preferred Co-

Workers (LPC) Scale. This approach is more on scoring and identifying for the leaders

by asking them to think for a person with which they worked that they would like to least

to work with again, and then to score the person on a range of scales between positive

factors and negative factors. A high scored leader may generally tend to be more active,

close, productive, and positive relationship in the organization. Means that for the co-

workers or employees in the work place that leader may potentially be more effective

than the low scored leader tend to put tasks first and may turn to relationships only

when they are satisfied with how the work is going. .(changingminds.org/disciplines).
