Congress and its allies.
Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra
Modi is the strongest challenge for the
Congress and its allied UPA, and
possibly the only hope both for BJP in
particular and the Hindus - majority of
the country - in particular. Little wonder
therefore, the Congress-led UPA
government has preferred to turn a blind
eye to addressing the vital
issue of terrorism and punish
the terrorists and instead used
the supposedly impartial
Central Bureau of Investigation
(CBI) to hound BJP in general
and Modi in particular.
In this direction, the
recent arrest of Amit Shah, Gujarat home
minister alleged to be the mastermind
behind the encounter killing of
Sohrabuddin Sheikh is seen to be a blow
in the face of Modi at a time when he is
trying his best to bring about a makeover
from communal Modi to progressive Modi
in a crucial election year. Even as the CBI
has submitted its report on this case to
the Supreme Court, seeking more time
for further investigations, it wants this
case to be tried out of Gujarat - a
development that has justifiably

Some years back, a friend who had
gone to Indonesia, the most populous
Muslim country in the world, on his return
met me at Adipur in Kutch (Gujarat) and
showed me a high-denomination
(20,000 rupiah) currency note of that
country with Lord Ganesh imprinted on
it. I was as surprised, as I was
impressed.
When last month a group of
eminent Sindhi gentlemen came to Delhi
from Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia and
invited me for a World Sindhi Conference
scheduled to be held at Jakarta on July
9, 10 and 11, 2010, I readily agreed. One
reason was that I had never before been
to that country, though I had often heard
reports about the impact of Indian
civilization and more particularly, the
impact of epics like Ramayana and
Mahabharata on that country. The
Ganesh inscribed currency note was only
an example.

against a former Supreme Court judge
Tarun Chatterjee and 23 other judges for
their role in the infamous multi-crore
Ghaziabad provident fund (PF) scam.

Chatterjee because of the mysterious

Ashutosh Asthana. Asthana, who died
under mysterious circumstances in
Dasna jail in Ghaziabad, had named
several judges including Tarun Chatterjee
as beneficiaries of the money illegally
diverted from the state treasury in his
confessional statement before a
magistrate. Asthana’s family had alleged
that Asthana was killed by poison in
custody. Family said he was “murdered”
on the instructions of powerful people
involved in the scam.

Hindus in city face cremation problem
Dhaka, July 24, 2010: The Hindus
living in Dhaka city are facing a severe
shortage of cremation grounds due to
wholesale encroachment over the years.
The cremation grounds are also
weighed down with numerous problems
such as water shortage, worn out
building, lack of sitting arrangement and
toilet, coupled with the drug peddlers
gathering after dusk.
Only one cremation ground has
been established since independence
taking the number to just three for the
city's growing number of Hindus. No
statistics are available on the Hindu
population in the capital, but the
community leaders claim it to be around
20 percent of the city's total population of
over one crore.
According to Hindu religious
custom, bodies of adults are usually

of the Hindu castes bury the deceased,
both young and adult, instead of
cremating. Baishnobs, for example, are

Established over a hundred years
back, the two cremation grounds located
in Postogola and Lalbagh are
maintained by the Dhaka City Corporation
(DCC) while the one established in
Sabujbag some 10 years ago is
maintained by Sabujbagh Borodeshwari
Kali Mandir.

of land. It has now been reduced to only
40 kathas as some re-rolling mills and
iron sheet cutting factories have

overlooked in the city plan," said Kajal

Community leaders said they have
time and again raised the issues like
establishment of new burial grounds,
modernisation of funeral pyre with gas
furnace and ensuring hygiene of the
people living around the cremation
grounds to the authority but did not receive
much response.
Khoka, the city mayor, however says
the Hindus never brought it to him that
the issue of burial ground is so severe.
He also said an electric incinerator
worth Tk 3 crore was installed in
Postogola to modernise it but is now
lying idle because it is not cost effective
for the users.
The DCC is now thinking of a gas
burner, he said.

could insist on being sent back to

today, blaring not a call to prayer but a
call for rebellion.
The shrines turned protest pulpits
overnight in a throwback to the early
1990s when the governor of the day,
Jagmohan, had dubbed them “centre of
revolution (sic)”.
The trigger for the return to a tactic
used 20 years ago was the death of eight
civilians in clashes with security forces
yesterday, the bloodiest day of the seven-
week unrest that started in the second
week of June.
Today’s death count was also eight,
but a boy injured yesterday was among
those who died. Sameer Ahmad, an
eight-year-old from Srinagar who is the
youngest victim of the current spell of
violence, died of injuries suffered during
a clash. The police blamed his wounds
on a stampede. The seven other victims
included at least two school-going
teenagers, one of whom died in hospital
after a tear-gas shell hit him on Saturday.
The death toll has risen to 39 since
the violence began on June 11. Twenty-
two of the deaths have occurred in the
past four days.
Today’s flash point was Budgam,
where a mob of hundreds torched two
state government offices and a portion
of the railway station, the police said.
At Rajpura, also in Pulwama,
protesters set fire to all the four buildings
in a police station, injuring 20 people.
The incident mirrored yesterday’s raid on
the Khrew police station, 20km from
Srinagar, by a mob that unknowingly
torched an explosives-packed
storeroom, triggering a blast that killed
five people.
At Kralpora in north Kashmir’s
Kupwara, a mob looted arms from a
police post, triggering retaliation that
killed one person. The agitators fled with
four rifles.
One person was killed in police
firing after agitators attacked a police post
and attempted to set fire to it in Kulgam.
At neighbouring Sangam in Anantnag,
CRPF personnel fired on a stone-
throwing mob. The stampede that

“Court had given eight hours every
day for three days for interrogation of
Shah. What did CBI do? Questioned Shah,
on first day for two hours, second day 40
minutes and third day 23 minutes. Finish.
This is all interrogation. Then the CBI says
that Shah gave evasive answers. You
didn’t expect the accused to tell that he
committed the murder,” he added.

Mosques, the officer said, serve two

government. Plus, they (the people) feel
safe, thinking they are protesting
peacefully inside and will not be harmed
by the police.”
Jagmohan mentioned several
incidents in his book, My Frozen
Turbulence in Kashmir. “The subversives
used mosques extensively for rearing,
nursing and fanning their activities. In fact,
one of the instructions was to make
mosques centre of revolution (sic).”
History was repeating itself today
as scores of mosques reverberated with
azaadi songs, and pro-freedom and anti-
India slogans. Thousands, including the
elderly and children, flocked to such
mosques. Some went even at night.
At many places, the crowd spilled
onto the streets. But at the forefront were
mostly teenagers or youths in their early
twenties — described as the “children of
conflict” because they were born during
the past 20 years of strife. Many were
painting roads and walls with the slogan:
“Go India go”.
The authorities aren’t unaware of
the trouble that can be fomented from
mosques, and Jagmohan’s “centre of
revolution” phrase is on their mind. That
could explain why they have not permitted
prayer gatherings in some mosques.
That includes the Jamia Masjid,
Kashmir’s main mosque, where Friday
prayers have not been allowed for five
weeks now.

formed ice lingam of Lord Shiva in
Amarnath cave shrine has totally melted,
official sources revealed on Monday.
"The holy ice lingam does not exist
any more as it melted totally on July 29",
official sources told PTI.
The pilgrimage to the Himalayan
cave shrine, situated at a height of 13,500
feet, started July 1 and will end Aug 02.
The board's official data collection centre
has recorded four lakh pilgrim arrivals in
just a period of one month.
The figure is expected to touch
600,000 - at least 100,000 more than last
year's arrivals, which was the highest. The
shrine, which houses an icy stalagmite
that is a symbol of Hindu Lord Shiva, saw
500,000 pilgrims arriving last year.
The Shiv Lingam, which at its best
achieves a height of 12 feet, lasted just
32 days this year.

Was the alleged rape of an Orissa
nun, following the assassination of
Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati and
four sanyasis in Kandhamal on Krishna
Janmasthami, Aug. 23, 2008, an
afterthought by missionaries targetted by
enraged Hindus? Was it a planned
vengeance, aimed at garnering the
international spotlight and forcing Chief
Minister Naveen Patnaik to break off his
alliance with the BJP, which empathized
with the Vishwa Hindu Parishad’s anger
at the murder of its octogenarian leader?
The questions are legitimate given
Father Thomas Chellan’s admission in
court on July 26, 2010, that he did not
report the alleged rape of the nun when
filing the first information report (FIR) with
the police on Aug. 26, 2008. The Baliguda
Catholic Church pastor, a key witness in
the case, admitted during cross-
examination before Cuttack district and
sessions judge Bira Kishore Mishra, that
he had not mentioned rape in the FIR
filed a day after the alleged rape. His
complaint caused the arrest of 23
persons.
The alleged rape of the 29-year-old
nun from Sambalpur occurred on Aug.
25 in Kandhamal district, a day after
agitated Hindus went on the rampage to
protest the gunning down of the Swami
and his disciple-monks in the precincts
of his own ashram. The Swami had
previously escaped several attempts on
his life and had received death threats
from missionaries infuriated by his anti-
conversion activities.

was reportedly dragged out of a retired
head clerk’s house by 40-odd armed
men who chanted ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai,’
taken to the office of an NGO, Jan Vikash,
where one man raped her. At that time,
12 policemen of the Orissa State Armed
Police were camping in a school in front
of the NGO office. The nun identified the
main accused as one Santosh Patnaik,
alias Mitu.
Father Chellan was reportedly
beaten and paraded half-naked on the
road the same day. He identified two
accused in court as being part of the mob
that attacked his church, but had failed to
identify either man during the test
identification parade held at Choudwar
jail last year. The case was initially
committed to a fast-track court in
Kandhamal that was trying all riot cases,
but was transferred to a sessions court
in Cuttack after the nun petitioned that
she felt unsafe in Kandhamal. (This is
now the standard refrain in all anti-Hindu

Kolkata, July 30, 2010: A lady teacher
in West Bengal's first Muslim university,
the Aliah University, was not allowed to
teach after she refused to wear the burqa
(veil) inside the varsity premises.
Sirin Middya, a guest lecturer of the
university, along with eight other lady
teachers got a 'diktat' from the leaders of
the students' union to wear burqa and
attend the college.
'I was asked by the leaders of the
student's union to wear burqa and attend
the college and if I don't abide by the

cases; Gujarat ex-minister Amit Shah is
only the latest victim).
Interestingly, Dr Chotray Marandia,
who first treated the nun after the alleged
assault-cum-rape, testified on Aug. 28
that she had only complained of swelling
on her face. “I only treated the swelling
on her face and she did not complain of
anything else,” he replied when asked
by defence lawyers about other injuries
on her body. So we have no evidence of
rape or any sexual activity.
The then block development officer,
B.B. Mishra, testified that he had
accompanied the nun and priest to the
local police station to file their complaint
about the mob attack. Both thus had full
official protection while filing the
complaint, and cannot claim that the
police did not record the FIR properly, or
that the rape charge was ignored by the
police. These testimonies are damning.
That the rape is most likely a
fabrication can be seen from the
nervousness of the prosecution. Earlier,
her lawyers had sought a month’s time
for the nun to appear before the court.
This is suspicious to say the least, but
fits in with the church’s hiding the nun
from the local people and producing a
veiled woman with a thick Malayalam
accent at a press conference in Delhi.
Interesting, last Saturday, the nun failed
to identify the key accused at a test
identification parade.
The Church-prosecution
embarrassment has been aggravated by
the June 12, 2010 arrest of Pandit
Bishimajhi By Kim I. Hartman for allegedly
plotting to kill the nun and priest to prevent
them from testifying against the mob. It
was alleged that Bishimajhi led several
mob attacks, one of which stripped and
paraded the nun and Father Chellan, and
is thus complicit in the fast-disintegrating
rape case.

It may be appropriate to put the anti-
missionary violence in context. The
Kandhamal violence broke out after the
murder of Swami Laxmanananda, whose
tireless efforts to uplift the tribal
communities and protect their religion and
culture against aggressive proselytisation
infuriated the evangelists and Maoist goons
(mostly converts). The Swami was severely
injured in an attack on Christmas Eve 2007,
and had then accused a Congress MP and
World Vision chief for the attack. He alleged
a nexus between Maoist terrorists and
missionaries; which is why when Maoists
claimed responsibility for the killings, public
ire was directed at the missionaries.
Certainly the murders had a purely
religious motivation; Orissa has in recent
years seen an influx of rich American
Baptists, for soul-harvesting purposes.
Beginning on December 26, 1970,
Swami Laxmanananda was attacked
eight times before he was finally struck
down by AK-47-wielding assailants in
2008, according to the fact-finding
commission chaired by Additional
Advocate General of Rajasthan, G.S. Gill.
Soon after the multiple murders in the
ashram, state police arrested World
Vision employee Pradesh Kumar Das
while escaping from the district. Later,
two men, Vikram Digal and William Digal
were arrested from the house of a local
militant Christian, Lal Digal, at Nugaon;
they admitted having joined a group of
28 assailants. Then, in July 2009, a
Maoist couple, Surendra Vekwara and
Ruby, also allegedly involved in the
killings, surrendered to the Orissa police.
One does not know how the state
government intends to prosecute the
cases against these persons, especially
as the sensational rape case is silently
falling apart!
However, as I have previously
argued, the murder of Swami
Laxmanananda closely resembles the
murder of Swami Shanti Kaliji Maharaj
in Tripura in August 2000. The latter was
also shot in his own ashram by gun-
wielding goons after several dire
warnings against his anti-conversion
activities in the tribal belt were ignored.

prompted Biju Janata Dal MP Tathagata
Satpathy to insist that there was an
urgent need for an anti-conversion
legislation as aggressive proselytisation
was hurting the social fabric.

a national debate on conversions and
an end to the foreign funding to NGOs.
This is an urgent imperative.

newspaper called, Sanskrit Vartaman
Patram, in Gujarat started publishing.
Newspaper was launched
simultaneously from six cities of Gujarat
called Vadodara, Surat , Bharuch,
Palanpur, Modasa, Idar.
Already two Sanskrit newspaper’s
are in circulation, one is from South
Indian city of Mysore in Karnataka and
another is from Kanpur , Uttar Pradesh.
Initiative for starting a Sanskrit
newspaper in Gujarat was started by
some scholar’s of M.S .University situated
in Vadodara. In the initial stages, 1500
copies of the newspaper was published.
It was observed that movement for
rejuvenation of Sanskrit got
encouragement from various quarter’s
recently. Government of Uttarakhand
recently declared Sanskrit as the second
language of the state after Hindi. Similarly
some villages in Karnataka uses
Sanskrit as the mother tongue.

Hindu girls have been brutally molested
by the Muslim goons on 12th July at
Middepara Lichutala under Santipur
police station in Nadia district of West
Bengal. They were returning from school
after appearing in school exam. Some
Muslim girls too were with them who
were their classmates.
The Muslim boys snatched the
scarves (dupatta) of the 3 Hindu girls and
poured liquor on their whole body. The
girls were molested and brutally tortured
in broad daylight. Nobody came to their
rescue as the area is absolutely
dominated by Muslim fanatics.
The news was not reported in any
newspaper, nor stated in the TV news.
The biased Indian Media would have
given undue coverage if only they were
Muslim girls who were raped and the
perpetrators were Hindu boys! But we
have never come across such news,
because Hindu boys are not monsters
like Islamists.

major controversy with Guru Manyo
Granth Society, a Sikh organisation,
asking separatist leaders including
Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar
Farooq to come clean on this issue.
"They [separatists] claim the
freedom struggle is not restricted to
Muslims but also belongs to Sikhs and
Hindus. Then why have these so-called
leaders not uttered a single word to
condemn the attack on the Sikh
community. Their silence arouses
suspicion about their role in the attack,"
Jasdeep Singh, president of the society
said.
Sikhs have urged chief minister
Omar Abdullah to take action against the
offenders or face repercussions.
"The security of Sikhs will be
ensured and people who try to disrupt
communal harmony will be dealt with
sternly," the chief minister said.

year’s Nallur Festival in the Jaffna
Peninsula and pilgrims have been told
that only the traditional saree or long skirt
and full blouse for women and
the verti for men will be allowed.

was taken since a large

entire upper part of the body,” Ms.
Patkunarajah said. The popular churidar
(Salvars) worn by women had also been
banned, she said.

unveiled at the Institute of Mathematical
Sciences (IMSc) on Friday.
Atomic Energy Commission

performance computation (HPC) cluster
having 1.5 Tera Byte (TB) memory and
30 TB storage space cluster capacity.
Banerjee lauded the technical team
