4 masses 1 , 2 , 3 and 4 are 100kg, 150kg, 120 kg and 130 kg respectively. The
corresponding radius of rotation are 0.225m, 0.175m, 0.25m and 0.3m respectively and the
angles between successive masses are 45 , 120 and 225. Find the position and magnitude
of the balance mass required if its radius of rotation is 0.6m.
SOLUTION
r = 0.6 m, 5 = ? , r5 = ?
m = Balancing mass and = The angle which the balancing mass makes with m.
Analytical method
= 15.97 kgm
= 6.87 kgm
Resultant, R= V 2 + H 2
= 6.872 + 15.972
= 17.39. kgm
Therefore, the magnitude of the balance mass required if its radius of rotation is 0.6 m :
mr = 17.39
m(0.6)= 17.39
m= 17.39/ 0.6
m= 28.98kg
The angle of the balance mass required if its radius of rotation is 0.6 m
V 6.87
tan = H = 15.97 = 0.4302
= 23.28
The balancing mass m lies opposite to the radial direction of the resultant force and the
angle of inclination with the horizontal is = 203.28 . Angle measured in the counter
clockwise direction.
= 180 + 23.28
= 203.28
Graphical Method
Scale 1:10
The balancing force is then equal to the resultant force
R= mr
mr = 175.2/10
m= 17.52/0.6
m= 29.2kg
The balancing mass m lies opposite to the radial direction of the resultant force and and
the angle of inclination with the horizontal is = 203 . Angle measured in the counter
clockwise direction.
= 23 + 180
= 203
CALCULATION OF BALANCING IN ONE PLANE IN REAL LIFE
SOLUTION
r = 0.2 m, 5 = ? , r5 = ?

m = Balancing mass and = The angle which the balancing mass makes with m.
1. Analytical method
= 40 + 31.8 30 20.2
= 21.6 kgm
= 0 + 31.8 + 52 75.3
= 8.5 kgm
Resultant, R= V 2 + H 2
= (21.6)2 + (8.5)2
= 23.2 kgm
We know that
V
mr = R and tan =H
Therefore, the magnitude of the balance mass required if its radius of rotation is 0.6 m :
mr = 23.2
m(0.2)= 23.2
m= 23.2/ 0.2
m= 116 kg
and
V 6.87
tan = H = 15.97 = 0.4302
= 21.48
Since is the angle of the resultant R from the horizontal mass of 200 kg, therefore the angle
of the balancing mass from the horizontal mass of 200 kg,
= 180 + 21. 48
= 201.48
Graphical Method
The balancing force is equal to the resultant force, but opposite in direction as shown
m 0.2 = 23 kg-m
23
m= = 115 kg Ans.
0.2
By measurement we also find that the angle of inclination of the balancing mass (m) from the
horizontal mass of 200 kg,
= 21 + 180
= 201 Ans.
