Results of Calculation

4 masses 1 , 2 , 3 and 4 are 100kg, 150kg, 120 kg and 130 kg respectively. The
corresponding radius of rotation are 0.225m, 0.175m, 0.25m and 0.3m respectively and the
angles between successive masses are 45 , 120 and 225. Find the position and magnitude
of the balance mass required if its radius of rotation is 0.6m.

SOLUTION

Given 1 = 100 kg , 2 = 150 kg , 3 = 120 kg , 4 = 130 kg

1 = 0.225 m, 2 = 0.175m , 3 = 0.25 m , 4 = 0.3 m

1 = 0, 2 = 45, 3 = 120 , 4 = 255 ;

r = 0.6 m, 5 = ? , r5 = ?

FIRST STEP: DRAW THE TABLE

MASS MASS, m (kg) RADIUS,r(m) mr (kgm) DIRECTION,

1 100 0.225 22.5 0
2 150 0.175 26.25 45
3 120 0.25 30 120
4 130 0.3 39 255
5 5 0.6 5 0.6 5

m = Balancing mass and = The angle which the balancing mass makes with m.
Analytical method

Sum of horizontal components of the centrifugal forces,

H= 1 1 cos 1 + 2 2 cos 2 +, 3 3 cos 3 +4 4 cos 4

= 22.5cos 0 + 26.25cos 45 + 30cos 120 + 39cos 255

= 22.5 + 18.56 15 10.1

= 15.97 kgm

Sum of vertical components of the centrifugal forces,

V= 1 1 sin 1 + 2 2 sin 2 +, 3 3 sin 3 +4 4 sin 4

= 22.5sin 0 + 26.25sin 45 + 30sin 120 + 39sin 255

= 0 + 18.56 + 25.98 37.67

= 6.87 kgm
Resultant, R= V 2 + H 2

= 6.872 + 15.972

= 17.39. kgm

Therefore, the magnitude of the balance mass required if its radius of rotation is 0.6 m :

mr = 17.39

m(0.6)= 17.39

m= 17.39/ 0.6

m= 28.98kg

The angle of the balance mass required if its radius of rotation is 0.6 m

V 6.87
tan = H = 15.97 = 0.4302

= 23.28

The balancing mass m lies opposite to the radial direction of the resultant force and the
angle of inclination with the horizontal is = 203.28 . Angle measured in the counter
clockwise direction.

= 180 + 23.28

= 203.28
Graphical Method

Scale 1:10
The balancing force is then equal to the resultant force

R= mr

mr = 175.2/10

since radius is 0.6m

m= 17.52/0.6

m= 29.2kg

The balancing mass m lies opposite to the radial direction of the resultant force and and
the angle of inclination with the horizontal is = 203 . Angle measured in the counter
clockwise direction.

= 23 + 180

= 203
CALCULATION OF BALANCING IN ONE PLANE IN REAL LIFE

In order to determine the unbalance in a grinding wheel, rotating clockwise at 2400rpm, a

vibration analyser is used. There are four masses used as the vibration analyser. Four masses
are 200 kg, 300 kg, 240 kg and 260 kg respectively. The corresponding radius of rotation are
0.2 m, 0.15 m, 0.25 m and 0.3 m respectively and the angles between successive masses are
45, 75 and 135. If the phase marks are measured from the right hand horizontal, calculate
the position and magnitude of the balance mass required, if its necessary balancing radius of
rotation is 0.2 m

SOLUTION

Given : 1 = 200 kg , 2 = 300 kg , 3 = 240 kg , 4 = 260 kg

1 = 0.2 m, 2 = 0.15m , 3 = 0.25 m , 4 = 0.3 m

1 = 0, 2 = 45, 3 = 45 + 75 = 120 , 4 = 45 + 75 + 135 = 255 ;

r = 0.2 m, 5 = ? , r5 = ?

DRAW THE TABLE

Mass (kg) Radius (m) mr ( kgm) ()

1 200 0.2 40 0

2 300 0.15 45 45

3 240 0.25 60 120

4 260 0.3 78 255

5 5 0.2 5 0.2 5

m = Balancing mass and = The angle which the balancing mass makes with m.
1. Analytical method

The space diagram is shown above

Resolving 1 1 , 2 2 , 3 3 and 4 4 horizontally,

H= 1 1 cos 1 + 2 2 cos 2 +, 3 3 cos 3 +4 4 cos 4

= 40cos 0 + 45cos 45 + 60cos 120 + 78cos 255

= 40 + 31.8 30 20.2

= 21.6 kgm

Resolving 1 1 , 2 2 , 3 3 and 4 4 vertically,

V= 1 1 sin 1 + 2 2 sin 2 +, 3 3 sin 3 +4 4 sin 4

= 40sin 0 + 45sin 45 + 60sin 120 + 78sin 255

= 0 + 31.8 + 52 75.3

= 8.5 kgm
Resultant, R= V 2 + H 2

= (21.6)2 + (8.5)2

= 23.2 kgm

We know that

V
mr = R and tan =H

Therefore, the magnitude of the balance mass required if its radius of rotation is 0.6 m :

mr = 23.2

m(0.2)= 23.2

m= 23.2/ 0.2

m= 116 kg

and

V 6.87
tan = H = 15.97 = 0.4302

= 21.48

Since is the angle of the resultant R from the horizontal mass of 200 kg, therefore the angle
of the balancing mass from the horizontal mass of 200 kg,

= 180 + 21. 48

= 201.48
Graphical Method
The balancing force is equal to the resultant force, but opposite in direction as shown

Since the balancing force is proportional to m.r, therefore

m 0.2 = 23 kg-m

23
m= = 115 kg Ans.
0.2

By measurement we also find that the angle of inclination of the balancing mass (m) from the
horizontal mass of 200 kg,

= 21 + 180

= 201 Ans.
