Chairlady Message
On behalf of the 11th IS Symposium in collaboration with the 4th MCS Symposium
organizing committee and final year students of Information Systems and the
Mathematics and Computing Science Departments, it is a great honor to welcome
you all to the Divine Word Universitys 11th IS Symposium together with the 4th MCS
Symposium.
This year marks the first of its kind for the two departments to host a combined
symposium here in the Divine Word University. Both departments have grown from
young to continually growing department each year with academic improvements as
technology advances.
The theme for this years symposium is, Innovation through collaborative learning and
knowledge creation in the global network of information technology, mathematics and
computing science. The theme associates with the universitys theme, Innovating
DWU through collaborative learning and collaborative knowledge creation in the
global network for higher learning. The symposium targets to promote the theme
by presenting innovative IT solution to be presented in different government and
non-governmental organizations. The ICT solutions that will be presented in this
symposium play vital roles in the improvement of the Nations growth and the
contributions in achieving the governments 50 year plan, the Vision 2050.
As young intellectuals, we trust that the development of our projects will assist in the
ICT industry level of learning institutes, private and government sectors of Papua
New Guinea. Our projects incorporate consist of network initiatives/upgrades and an
information system using either a desktop or web-based system development. The
presentation of our projects will support the aim of our search for quality solutions in
Information Systems, Mathematics and Technology Advancements.
I would like to thank, our sponsors, the symposium organizing committee, my fellow
colleagues, students of IS and MCS and the both departments as a whole for their
support and tireless efforts in preparing towards this big event. It has been my great
privilege and pleasure working with you all.
To the academic staff, distinguished guests, parents, students, and the DWU
Community; you are all very welcome to the 11th Information Systems in collaboration
with the 4th Mathematics and Computing Science Symposium. May this symposium
inspire you with a great insight on the significance of the development of the ICT
industry of innovation through collaborative learning and knowledge creation in
the global network and may you all continue to support and be a part of this great
development in the future.

Dear IS and MCS students,
On behalf of the Divine Word University community, I express great pride in the
way the Information Systems (IS) and Mathematics and Computing Science (MCS)
students have adapted to the digital age, with its ever increasing information commu-
nications technologies. You are wonderful examples of young people leading the way
with digital literacy. Your skills are awesome.

understand its potential. In the case of personal, education and business activities,
digital media has become part of the re-definition of our PNG society. I see you as
legitimate people with the power to influence work habits of the future. You will be the
innovators and drivers of change.

Message from the HOD

On behalf of the Departments of Information Systems and Mathematics & Computing
Science, I welcome you all to the 11th Annual Information Systems Symposium
now incorporating Mathematics & Computing Science conducted at Divine Word
University, Madang Campus. We note the significance of this second decade of
offering this Symposium as a milestone in the development of our IS and MCS
Departments. We also acknowledge this year the implementation by our Departments
of a Cisco Academy with worldwide accreditation and presently under sponsorship by
the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT). Already we are seeing verifiable
evidence of this development with the sophisticated data, voice and wireless networks
setup for Open Day earlier this year and for this Symposium, joint efforts of staff and
student cooperation.
The Symposium enables our final year IS and MCS students to present the results of
their research development projects which they are required to undertake as part of
their final year of degree studies. Important relevant presentations are also made by
specially invited guest speakers.
Under staff supervision students undertake a research project which will involve
them in developing a solution to a real world IS/IT scenario which they have identified
during the course of their studies or during periods of work experience which are
greatly esteemed within the department. Delivering a service innovation to a PNG
organization, particularly to those that are self-funded is regarded as an important
component of each research project. The project is also seen as an important
preparation for those about to enter the workforce where graduates will be expected
to think for themselves in confronting challenges with minimum supervision. It has
been our experience that specialized skills developed in a particular project have
frequently led directly to employment opportunities.
We also note that the logistics of the Symposium are undertaken by various
committees of the student group and is one of many opportunities offered to students
in the IS and MCS Departments to develop leadership skills and holistic personal
development.
Most importantly, students learn a lot about themselves discovering, developing
and realizing skills and personal gifts that they were not previously aware of. The
pressure of presenting in front of a public audience challenges students to rise to the
occasion which they always do.
Welcome again and may this years symposium be a source of knowledge and
inspiration to us all, specialists and generalists alike.

Message from Symposium Coordinator

On behalf of the Departments of Information Systems and Mathematics & Computing
Science, I welcome you all to the 11th Annual Information Systems Symposium
incorporating with the 4th Mathematics & Computing Science at Divine Word University.
This year we celebrate an achievement of a first combined annual symposium, and setting
a standard for future symposiums.
The theme of this years symposium is aimed at developing innovative solutions through
collaborative learning and knowledge creation in the global network of information
technology, mathematics and computing science.
The symposium provides an avenue for our final year students to present the outcome
of their research projects undertaken during the final semester of their studies. Guest
speakers are invited to give presentations related to the theme of the symposium.
Undertaking these projects enables student to integrate the knowledge, skills and
experiences acquired during their study by analysing, designing and developing innovative
solutions to problems identified in an organization. These projects help prepare our
students before they enter the workforce where graduates are expected to manage their
work responsibilities and perform high, contribute to the development of the organizations
and growth of the nation.
The symposium also provides an opportunity for students to develop their managerial
leadership skills as they take on various roles and responsibilities in preparing, planning
and hosting the event. It enables our students to discover, develop and realize their gifts
and potential, and utilizing their knowledge, skills and experiences to develop innovative
solutions.
Once again, welcome to this years symposium; an event to be remembered by us all.

About the Departments

The Information Systems Department
The Information Systems program is designed to fill a perceived and urgent
emerging need to provide the workforce of Papua New Guinea with professionals
who are competent to assist, and provide leadership in, the use, development and
maintenance of electronic digital technology, and engage in research in information
systems and technology, particularly as it impacts corporate and service sectors
of the national economy. Various recently published PNG Government statements
have emphasised the need for a workforce well educated in the use of Information
Communication Technology . The demand for IT professionals in creating information
systems that are robust, reliable and responsive to changing business environments
continue to grow.

The Mathematics & Computer Science Department

The Bachelor of Mathematics and Computing Science program fills an urgent
emerging need to provide the workforce of Papua New Guinea with professionals
who are competent to apply mathematical and computing techniques and engage in
research in mathematics and computing science. The demand for computer-literate
mathematicians continues to grow as technology advances. Whether it is making a
mobile phone secure, understanding the behavior of complex software or designing
a super-fast algorithm, mathematics is the key. Mathematics is also being used in
medicine, for example in the analysis of brain scans; and in anthropology, in the study
of social relationships; to name just a couple of examples.

Purpose
This years combined symposium is an opportunity that invites discussion and
promotes research into technologies that are available in our country. It also creates
an avenue for undergraduates to develop their confidence in public speaking and
displaying their general competency. Apart from setting standards and quality,
surrounding this is the awareness that comes in the presentations and discussions
which shows a collective outcome that benefits all parties involved. It is an opportunity
to help ourselves develop our understanding and sharing knowledge amongst
each other. At the end of the day, we educate ourselves and make us aware of the
technologies around us. These in one way or another help in closing the Digital divide
faced in Papua New Guinea.
