Student Expectations
Students are expected to use their notebooks daily to record assignments and
assessments. A daily agenda will be posted.
Students are expected to attend class regularly, be on time and be prepared (with pens,
notebook, homework, and handouts).
All work turned in is expected to be neat, organized and reflect excellence.
All work should be turned in using blue/black ink unless the assignment calls for
drawing.
Homework can be expected at least Monday-Thursday (and some Fridays) and is due
the following day in class, unless otherwise noted.
Absent students are responsible for making up all missed class work and homework
assignments. Absent students can get information about missing assignments from the
teacher, checking red folders (on the board) or assigned student. District policy will be
followed in regards to absences and make up work.
Extra help is available and encouraged. I am able to help students during class, as well as
outside of class by appointment or during scheduled tutorial days. Students should be
concerned about their progress on a daily basis, not just at the end of the nine weeks.
Usually updated grades are posted every two weeks.
Group grade policy: If students are allowed to choose their group or partner, each
person in the group will receive the same grade for the assignment/assessment.
Technology is an important component of this class. Students are expected to use
technology appropriately at all times. Parents are responsible for any items lost or
damaged by their child. Students must also adhere to board policy with regards to their
own technology and therefore can only have technological devices visible at the request
of the teacher.
ClassDojo will be used as one of the recording methods of student participation and
behavior. Parents are strongly encouraged to sign up for an account to keep track of
behavior/participation.
Students are held accountable for materials and resources given. Students will not be
given duplicate copies of assignments except under extenuating circumstances. Please
encourage your child to be responsible.
Appropriate behavior is expected at all times. Students who disrupt the learning
environment will suffer the appropriate consequences and can lose school privileges.

Binders will be set up following this outline:

1. Policies and Procedures/Standards
2. Warm ups
3. Homework
4. My Data/My Goals

After each unit is completed, students will clean all sections of their notebook. These papers will be
stapled together and filed in the classroom for further reference and for use in their portfolio.
Please review the above with your child. By signing below, he/she is making a commitment to keep
their notebook organized. Students should have their social studies notebook organized and ready to
use by Monday, August 14th. Please put these papers at the front of the binder.

2
Grading Summary
Students will be allowed to demonstrate how well they are making sense of social studies in many
ways. Below is a grading summary.

Participation
Because participating in discussions and activities are so important in helping the students make sense
of social studies, this is one part of the students grade.

Journal writing/ Social Studies Reflections/Constructed Responses

It is very important to communicate effectively in social studies through writing. Therefore, journal
writing also figure into the grade. These assignments are used for problem solving, communicating
and understanding, and summarizing concepts learned. Notebooks/binders will be collected
periodically and some of the writings will be required to be prepared/presented in a student portfolio.

Homework
Homework assignments offer students opportunity to think about problems more in depth. Homework
assignments are very important. Students will sometimes have the opportunity to revise their answers
as we discuss problems but must have the work attempted prior to the start of class.

Vocabulary
Understanding social studies terminology is necessary for developing understanding. Students will
periodically be given vocabulary words to list, define, and use.

Partner Assessments
Some quizzes will be done with a partner. Students are assessed on putting their heads together since
a lot of what we do in class is explored with others as well as the answers given.

Quizzes
Individuals will be given opportunities on a weekly basis to demonstrate the depth of the knowledge.
Quizzes may or may not be pre-announced.

Tests / Projects
On a regular basis individuals will be assessed through tests given. This serves as an opportunity for
students to show what they, as individuals, have learned regarding the topic. Students may only retest
if they attend tutorial. Students may also be assigned a project at the end of the unit, which will be
graded based on the amount of work asked for each project.

DBQs (Document Based Questions)/Inquiry Based Assignments

Critical thinking is an important skill to develop. Life usually gives people many choices and the
choices are not always cut and dried. Students will look at primary and secondary sources to address
selected questions and support their position on that question with evidence.

Notebook Check
Students are expected to keep an organized notebook for them to be able to study and reflect on
previously addressed material. Periodically, students will be issued a grade on the quality of their
notebook.

Progress Reports
Students will frequently be given progress reports that must be signed by parent or guardian. This
will ensure that you and your child are aware of your childs grade.
