STANDARD PARTS - Section SP-8 77F-A

HYDRAULIC TUBE FITTINGS (CARBON STEEL)
GENERAL SPECIFICATIONS
37FLARED TYPE
DIMENSIONS. All dimensions in this specification are in inches.
GENERAL. The requirements of SAE Standard J514-Jul 94 (ANSI B116.1-1974) are a part of this
specification. Excerpts from this SAE (ANSI) standard are repeated below as design aids with option
being taken on material callout.
STRAIGHT THREADS. Unified Standard Class 2A external and Class 2B internal threads with modified
minor diameters, where specified, shall apply to plain finish (unplated) fittings of all types. For
externally threaded parts with a protective treatment, the maximum diameters of Class 2A may be
exceeded by the amount of the allowance, that is, the basic diameters (Class 2A maximum diameters
plus the allowance) apply to an externally threaded part after plating. For internally threaded parts with
a protective treatment, the Class 2B diameters and modified minor diameters shall apply.
PIPE THREADS. Unless there is specific authorization to the contrary, pipe threads shall conform to
Class 1 Dryseal American National Standard Taper Pipe Thread (NPTF). Specifications are given in
detail in the ANSI Standard B1.20.3-76.
MATERIAL. Fittings shall be made from carbon steel.
PROTECTIVE TREATMENT. Fittings shall be furnished cadmium or zinc plated to a thickness of
0.0002 inch minimum followed by a chromate treatment, or with a phosphate coating (oil finished).
These parts must meet the requirements of 32 hour salt spray test in accordance with ASTM B117-85,
Method of Salt Spray (Fog) Testing. A particular plating or coating may be specified by adding the
appropriate suffix letter, chosen from Section 3 of Corporate Engineering Standards, to the fitting part
number.
ASSEMBLY CONSIDERATIONS. Use of a compatible lubricant is desirable in assembling Dryseal
pipe threads on hydraulic tube fittings to minimize galling.
For reference and design purposes, the assembled dimensions of two- and three-piece assemblies are
listed below:

(a) Beyond Tap Drill Depth 0. passage may be reduced to below the tap drill diameter, but shall not be less than the
Minimum Diameter D for the corresponding size.
(b) Maximum depth shall be optional with manufacturer provided that the strength of the fitting is not impaired.
(c) Mean dimension of those shown shall apply as minimum for the boss diameter.
All requirements, except for the added working pressures, are as specified in SAE Standard J514-Jul 94(ANSI
B116.1-74).
PIPE THREADS. Shall conform to American National Standard ANSI B1.20.3-76 for NPTF, Class 1 Dryseal
Pipe Thread.
MATERIAL. Unless otherwise specified, hydraulic pipe fittings shall be made from carbon steel. When carbon
steel pipe fittings are fabricated from multiple components they must be bonded together with materials
having a melting point of not less than 1900F and in a manner to assure the working pressures specified.
PROTECTIVE TREATMENT. Unless otherwise specified, hydraulic pipe fittings shall be furnished cadmium or
zinc plated to a thickness of 0.0002 inch minimum followed by a chromate treatment, or with a phosphate
coating (oil finished). These parts must meet the requirements of 32 hour salt spray test in accordance with
ASTM B 117, Method of Salt Spray (Fog) Testing.
WORKMANSHIP. Shall conform to the best commercial practice to produce high quality hydraulic pipe fittings.
These parts shall be free from all hanging burrs, loose scale, and slivers which might become dislodged in
usage and all other defects which might affect serviceability.
