Psychological entitlement is a
personality trait characterized by pervasive feelings of deservingness,
specialness, and exaggerated expectations. Entitlement may be seen as such
vulnerability. First, exaggerated expectations, notions of the self as special
and inflated deservingness associated with trait entitlement present the
individual with a continual vulnerability to unmet expectations. Second,
entitled individuals are likely to interpret these unmet expectations in ways
that foster disappointment, ego threat, and a sense of perceived injustice,
all of which may lead to psychological distress indicators such as
dissatisfaction across multiple life domains, anger, and generally volatile
emotional responses (Grubbs and Exline).
While Freud recognized that there are an almost
infinite variety of personalities, he identified
three main types: erotic, obsessive, and
narcissistic. Most of us have elements of all three.
We are all, for example, somewhat narcissistic. If
that were not so, we would not be able to survive Erotic, obsessive, and
or assert our needs (Maccoby). narcissistic
Productive narcissists have the audacity to
push through the massive transformations that
society periodically undertakes (Maccoby).

Violent criminals and conmen are claiming an extreme form of narcissism can help explain
their criminal behavior, and have been using it to apply for a sentencing discount before the
courts. Narcissistic Personality Disorder has been accepted as a mitigating factor in a number
of high-profile criminal trials around the country. Some psychiatrists say sufferers have a
heightened sense of self-importance and entitlement, resulting in exploitation of others to
attain an unrealistic lifestyle (Houston).
One man on trial received a reduced sentence after he strangled and burned the body of his
partner; he was able to be diagnosed with Narcissistic Personality Disorder shortly after being
obtained. Another case involved a conman who has more than three dozen convictions of
fraud, and is $19 million in debt to the Australian Tax Office received only an 18-month
sentence, justifying his crimes because he was depressed with a mood disorder and struggled
with post-traumatic stress disorder and avoidant personality disorder. After his arrest he was
diagnosed with NPD. Criminals are able to justify their acts of crime and receive a lesser
sentence because of their diagnosis.
