I get letters every week from devoted missionaries who want so badly for their investigators to
somehow see this pearl of great price that is the gospel for what it isthe greatest, most
important, and most transformational message in the universe. We ask, How can they not
see this? Dont they know what they are missing? How could they possibly be turning this
down? They also ask, What do I have to do to help them realize what they are rejecting?
or How can I help them see that nothing they have ever seen, done, or chosen can even
come close to this in importance?
The scriptures and living prophets can help us understand the priorities that God has ordained
then, now, and forever. Perhaps reading some of these scriptures with our investigators can
help them re-prioritize so that they can change their lives and make God and His kingdom the
highest priority in their lives. We read in Matthew 6:33, But seek ye first the kingdom of God,
and his righteousness: and all these things shall be added unto you. This counsel given during
the Sermon on the Mount makes it clear what our priorities should be. These words were
spoken by the Savior himself. In the same sermon he tells us to lay up for yourselves treasures
in heavenfor where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. (Matthew 6:20-22) In
the same train of thought, in the book of Mark 8:36, the Savior asks the rhetorical question,
For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? In other
words, there is absolutely nothing more valuable than leading the kind of life the Savior has
taught us to lead. If we lose our soulwhat do we have then?
In the Book of Mormon, this love for the things of the world over the things of God was also a
problem. Jacob warns his people in 2:18, But before ye seek for riches, seek ye for the
kingdom of God. And AFTER ye have obtained a hope in Christ ye shall obtain riches if ye
seek them; and ye will seek them for the intent to do good. . Modern prophets have also spoken
on this theme. President Ezra Taft Benson has stated, When we put God first, all other things fall into
their proper place or drop out of our lives. Our love of the Lord will govern the claims for our
affection, the demands on our time, the interests we pursue and the order of our priorities. We should
put God ahead of everyone else in our lives. This modern prophet makes it pretty clear what things
we should value the most and what we should put first in our priorities. On another occasion
President Benson also said, Just when one loses his life to God he really finds the abundant life; so
also when one sacrifices all to God, then God in return shares all that he has with him. Try as you
may, you cannot put the Lord in your debtfor every time you try to do his will, he simply pours out
more blessings upon you. Sometimes the blessings may seem to you to be a little slow in coming;
perhaps this tests your faith, but come they will and abundantly.
A final statement by a disciple of Christ affirms that, We become so caught up in the busyness of our
lives. Were we to step back, however, and take a good look at what were doing, we may find that
we have immersed ourselves in the thick of thin things. In other words, too often we spend most of
our time taking care of the things which do not really matter much at all in the grand scheme of
things, neglecting those more important causes.
Elders and Hermanas, learn the scriptures and statements quoted above and use them to help your
investigators understand what the Lord says about priorities. If they spend all day Sunday after
Sunday working and can never come to churchthat is a disordered set of priorities. If they sleep in
every Sabbath Day, that is a disordered set of priorities. If they wont come to church and keep the
Sabbath Day holy, that is a disordered set of priorities. If their whole life is spent earning money and
they never serve their fellowmanthat is a disordered set of priorities. May we teach them to seek
first the kingdom of God and thus help them understand the importance of baptism, confirmation
and a life dedicated to serving the Lord.
Benevolence is giving to others' basic needs without having as a motive personal reward. It is
doing the right thing for the right reason. When we choose to care for others, help make others
successful, freely give of our time and talents to bless others and take personal interest in them we
are benevolent.
The Savior is the supreme example of one who was benevolent. He cared for and blessed all
within his reach. He healed, taught, lifted and strengthened all around him. His entire life was
focused on others, never giving thought of his personal needs. In 1 Nephi19:9 we read, "And the
world, because of their iniquity, shall judge Him (the Savior) to be a thing of naught; wherefore
they scourge him, and he suffereth it, and they smite him, and he suffereth it. Yea, they spit upon
him, and he suffereth it, because of his loving kindness and long-suffering towards the children of
men." He was here to do His Father's will, to bless each of our lives.
King Benjamin is a perfect example of a benevolent leader. In Mosiah 2:14-15 we read, "I have
labored with mine own hands that I might serve you...I do not desire to boast...only to serve God."
He worked, served and blessed the lives of his followers. He was dearly loved and admired by the
people because they knew of his good heart and his desire for their welfare.
Barbara Dayton Perry is such a wonderful example of a benevolent person. For years she stood by
her husband, Elder L. Tom Perry, serving him and the many people within her sphere of influence. I
saw her goodness first hand when I asked her last year to speak at our Sisters Conferences. She
willingly accepted my invitation. She came to Spain well prepared with a thoughtful message for
the sisters. The day before the conference she asked if there was anything she could do to help
me with final preparations. The day of the conference, she not only delivered her message but
she worked tirelessly in the kitchen washing dishes until very late that night. I saw her demonstrate
benevolence when the Morejon's found out they had to return to Utah for Sister Morejon's surgery.
Sister Perry offered her beautiful condominium for them to stay. She had it all prepared, helped
with making it comfortable for them while they were in Utah. She prepared meals for them,
offered to do their laundry, helped them with groceries, and especially offered love and support
during this difficult time.
I have watched her prepare meal after meal for others, visit those in need, fulfill her church assignments,
attend funerals, and so much more. I feel grateful and blessed for her example.
As missionaries we can demonstrate benevolence in many ways. We can care more about our
companions needs, his/her growth, and happiness above our own. We can treat each investigator, less
active, member and person on the street with the same respect that we would want to be treated. We
can look at mundane missionary duties such as contacting and door knocking as a labor of love for the
Lord and the people in Spain. We can also focus on our investigators needs and desires, preparing
meaningful lessons to strengthen them.
President Dayton and I are so grateful for you wonderful missionaries. We see you going the extra mile to
serve, teach and love the people here in Spain. You invest time and energy in blessing those around you
without any thought of personal recognition. We are inspired by your goodness and genuine love and
care for others. We will continue to pray for you as you valiantly serve the Lord.
