Topic Proposal for Extended Inquiry Project Draft

UWRT 1102

Introduction/Overview of the Topic

Organized government is, arguably, the largest modern-day institution. Humans around the world

have to abide by the rules set forth by the leadership in their respective region. This can have major

effects on the civility of different societies. Governments have a substantial influence on their

peoples opinion, and can easily change their expectations and responses to global events. They

can also affect the standards of livability around the world. It is undeniable that government

institutions serve a beneficial role in the modern world. However, some can argue that some

aspects of these organizations can deter the development of a more peaceful and civilized society.

Having said that, it also is important to consider the civility of the political world in and of itself.

It is no secret that the current political situation is very charged and polarized. Many politicians

harbor immense distain towards those who do not share their points of view. Similarly, many

citizens feel personally offended by those who they deem to be unfit to lead.

In the most recent U.S. presidential election, we have seen countless displays that many would

consider to be uncivilized. It also seems that these events are continuing well after the election.

Many of this uncivility is observed in the language being used. Numerous modern politicians do

not adhere to the standards of discourse that have already been established. They diverge towards

new rhetoric that they consider more effective.

Meanwhile, even though the United States government plays a distinctive and integral role, it is

important to discuss it as it exists within the context of world politics. It is essential to compare
and contrast, in order to reach a conclusion on how different political practices affect individuals,

societies, and civilization.

Initial Inquiry Questions

It is important to consider whether organized government helps go make our world more civilized,

or does it have the opposite effect? Does it improve the general state of humanity, and how so?

Do government institutions make our world more livable?

Similarly, we can see that modern-day politics is filled with conflict and disagreement. Many

leaders are widely unpopular, and are believed to be unfit by the general public. Considering this,

and the many political mishaps we witness every day, can we say that the current political scene,

in the united states and around the world, is civilized?

Finally, how does language affect, and is affected, by politics? How does political correctness

evolve, or hinder, our communication?

My Interest in this Topic

Since the last U.S. presidential election, I have become increasingly more interested in politics. As

a non-American living in the United States, I was not very well-informed about the democratic

process and what it entails. After watching a lot of CNN, I found myself very interested in

American politics, especially as I compare it to the governing system in my home country of Saudi

Arabia, a non-democratic monarchy. To me, it is interesting to see how different leaderships can

create different standards of civility around the world. It is fascinating to observe how these

institutions dictate the general publics reception of countless issues.

My family, as well as many of my close friends, still live in Saudi Arabia. They are very much

influenced by that culture, which, in turn, is partially influenced by the political standards. After

moving to the United States in 2012, I have made close friendships with a few Americans who I
now consider to be family. I have had long conversations about the differences that can be seen

between individuals from different countries, and more importantly, how similar we can all be. It

interests me to consider how politicians can increase that divide or how they can mend it. I think

that it is important to discuss whether this political separation between countries, and their citizens,

is hindering globalization efforts and deterring societies from being more civilized.

Next Steps

I think that the most important resource in this line of inquiry will be print and televised news. It

is essential to remain aware of what is going on in the political world in the United States and

around the world. I find that the current state of the political scene is very rich. It is filled with

controversy, conflict, and polarization. There are many articles that report these events, as well as

discuss how they affect the greater population.

I look forward to explore more references that analyze the consequences of different types of

governments on citizens. As well as do further reading on the general reactions displayed based

on different democracies around the world.

In addition, I am excited to be involved in some collaborative work with my peers in this class. I

am interested to see how their individual topics relate to my own, especially when discussing

institutions and positions of power.

On one hand, I dont doubt that I will be able to find numerous insightful sources that will help me

understand different views on this subject. However, I am eager to contribute my own experiences

and observations. I hope that these two tools together will help me in writing an insightful and

comprehensive inquiry paper.
