SOLA is a web based research letter journal, which rapidly distribute scientific discoveries, new
findings and advances of understanding in meteorology and atmospheric sciences as well as in
related interdisciplinary areas. The name of this research letter, SOLA, is taken from acronym of
"Science Online Letters on the Atmosphere." The pronunciation of "SOLA" sounds similar to "sora"
of a Japanese language, which means the sky.
SOLA electric submission system that handles the manuscript from the submission to the final
decision is provided by JST (Japan Science and Technology Agency) and this system is designed
based on ScholarOne ManuscriptsTM. This electronic submission system opened on 1 October 2011.
Before submitting your manuscript, please read through "Editorial Regulation and Procedure" at
(http://www.metsoc.jp/sola/sola_edrp.pdf), and prepare the manuscripts following the instruction in
SOLA Submission Regulation, and submit them from the top page of SOLA submission site
(http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/sola). Instructions and user tutorials of the electronic submission
process are available at resources menu of the system Log In page. Should you have any question,
please contact the Chief Editor of SOLA:
The decision (accept or reject) of the manuscript will be determined within about two months after
the receipt of the manuscript, and will be rapidly uploaded to SOLA web site
(http://www.jstage.jst.go.jp/browse/sola/).
The types of the manuscript accepted in SOLA is a regular article which includes original findings.
Correction papers to the published articles (Corrigendum) can also be accepted. Those who would
like to submit corrigendum should contact the Chief Editor of SOLA.
3. Manuscript to be submitted.
The manuscripts as a regular article should include the Body Text, Figures, Tables (if any), a
Cover Letter, and the Copyright Agreement Form, which signed by all authors. Copyright
Agreement Form can also be sent separately via e-mail to the address of the SOLA Editorial Office
(sola_edit@metsoc.jp).
The body text must be a double spaced Microsoft WordTM (".doc" format is recommended) or
PDF (up to version 1.5) file with line numbers on the left side of the pages. The body text should
include the title, the name(s) of the author(s), the affiliation(s) of the author(s), abstract, properly
divided sections, acknowledgement, supplement description (if needed), and the list of the
references in this order. We strongly recommend using each template file in the Instruction &
Forms link in the SOLA submission page (http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/sola).
Each figure and table can be prepared as an independent file from the body text or can be prepared
within the same file with the body text as a single file. The resolution of figure and table is
preferable above 300 dpi. The following formats are acceptable as figure and/or table file; TIFF, GIF,
JPEG, AI, EPS, and PSD. For more information, please see "Tips for uploading files and images on
ScholarOne" (http://mchelp.manuscriptcentral.com/tutorials/fileconversion.pdf). If you prepare
figure/table files separately from the body text, you should uploaded the figure/table files one by one
on the SOLA submission system. In this case, the legends of figures and tables must be provided in
the text box at the figure upload page on the submission system. If you prepare figures/tables
included in the same file with the body text, please simply upload the single manuscript file on the
submission system.
The manuscripts must be submitted with a Cover Letter which contains title, author's name(s),
affiliation, telephone and fax numbers, and e-mail address of the corresponding author
(http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/societyimages/sola/Sample-Cover-Letter.doc). The author is
required to specify names of at least one appropriate editor in charge of your manuscript and a list of
five potential reviewers (at least three) with their e-mail addresses when submitting the manuscripts
through the electronic submission system.
The Copyright Agreement Form signed by all authors should be uploaded from file upload page in
the manuscript submission menu when the manuscript is submitted. The Copyright Agreement Form
for the case where the Crown Copyright or similar government work copyright is necessary is also
available in the same PDF file:
4. Limitation of pages.
The number of the words in the body text must be within 3100 words that includes the title, the
name(s) of the author(s), affiliation(s), abstract, acknowledgement, and supplement description. The
references, figure captions, citation description below the abstract, and the words within supplement
material(s) are not included in the number of the words. The total number of figures and tables must
be within 7. When the manuscript exceeds the limitation upon the submission, it is subject to
technical rejection at the SOLA editorial office. These limitations on the word count and the number
of figures and tables are applied also for the revised and the final version of the manuscript.
5. Page charge.
The number of the pages of SOLA is mostly 4 to 5 pages. The author is requested to pay the
publication charge. The rate is 15,000 Japanese-yen per printed page for members and non-members
of the Meteorological Society of Japan. The supplement file(s) is not included in the publication
charge.
6. Style of manuscripts.
The style of each manuscript (in a regular article form) should be as follows. A sample style file
may be obtainable from the SOLA web site:
The style of the corrigendum paper is more simplified. Please follow the instructions below:
j) Title, author's name and affiliation: Title should be Corrigendum: Your original article tile.
k) Abstract: Abstract is not required.
l) Text: It is not required to divide the main text into sections. However, if the authors would like
to separate into sections, please follow the instruction for the article case.
m) Other components: Please follow the instructions for the article case.
7. Revision of manuscripts.
The responsible editor, after judging reviewers' comments, may advise authors to revise their
manuscripts. If the advice of the revision is appropriate, the authors must revise and resubmit the
final draft within two weeks. If the responsible editor considers that the manuscript needs major
revision and it would take much more than two weeks to revise, the editor may decide that the
manuscript is rejected. At the same time, however, the editor possibly recommends the author to
resubmit the manuscript after sufficient revision is completed. The SOLA editorial committee
permits resubmissions of rejected manuscripts.
The review processes for corrigendum papers may be more simplified. The Chief Editor or the
editorial board member of SOLA would be the responsible editor. The editor-in-charge may consult
the reviewers or the editorial board member during the review processes.
8. Author's proof.
The author can view and edit the final form of the manuscript before uploading on the public web
site. No English proofreading is carried out by the SOLA editorial committee. Thus, the author is
fully responsible for the quality of English of the manuscript.
9. Reprints.
The author can obtain reprints with the Journal cover on request by submitting the Author's Form
(http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/societyimages/sola/Authorsforme.doc).
10. Copyright.
The copyright of papers published in SOLA belongs to the Meteorological Society of Japan (MSJ)
except the Crown Copyright or similar government work copyright. Copyright Agreement Form can
be found at: http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/societyimages/sola/SOLAcopyright.pdf.
Sample codes as the supplementary materials to a main text can be used, copied, and modified
freely without obtaining any permission from MSJ for the academic and educational purposes if
there are no specific descriptions on the terms and conditions for the use of the sample codes in the
main text. The authors are encouraged to specifically provide the terms and conditions for the usage
of the sample codes. MSJ shall not be responsible for any loss, damages, and troubles caused by the
use of the sample codes.
