ASAL MULA POHON ENAU

Dahulu kala ada suami dan istri yang tinggal di satu desa di Tanah Karo. Mereka hidup bahagia
karena hampir tidak ada perselisihan di antara mereka. Hidup mereka yang rendah hati hidup
dengan sabar sehingga perasaan mereka selalu tenang dan damai.

Kebahagiaan pasangan suami istri meningkat saat mereka mendapatkan anak laki-laki. Karena
menurut adat, anak laki-laki adalah anak yang akan melanjutkan keturunannya di masa depan.
Sesuai dengan ketentuan adat, mereka harus mengadakan upacara menabur anak. Nama
untuknya adalah Tare Iluh.

Saat Tare Iluh berumur satu tahun, ibunya hamil lagi. Orang tua Tare Iluh mengharapkan Tare
Iluh untuk mendapatkan adik perempuannya. Saat ibu dari Tare Iluh melahirkan, ternyata
harapan mereka terjawab. Ibu dari Tare Iluh melahirkan seorang anak perempuan, yang
kemudian bernama Beru Sibou. Tentu orang tua Tare Iluh merasa hidupnya lebih bahagia karena
telah mendapatkan sepasang anak.

Tak lama kemudian, kebahagiaan keluarga Tare Iluh tiba-tiba lenyap, karena tak disangka ayah
dari Tare Iluh meninggal dunia. Setelah ayah Tare Iluh meninggal, ibunya terpaksa bekerja keras
setiap hari untuk mencari makanan untuk kedua anaknya. Karena terlalu lelah untuk bekerja, ibu
Tare Iluh jatuh sakit. Seminggu kemudian ibu dari Tare Iluh meninggal dunia. Setelah kedua
orang tua mereka meninggal, Tare Iluh dan adiknya Beru Sibou dibesarkan oleh kerabat dekat
orang tua mereka. Keadaan anak yatim membuat Tare Iluh dan saudaranya Beru Sibou saling
mencintai.

Saat si Tare Iluh sudah tumbuh menjadi pemuda maka pergilah ia mengembara. Sebelum
meninggalkan dia berjanji kepada adiknya Beru Sibou bahwa dia akan kembali tak lama setelah
menghasilkan banyak uang.

Setelah saudaranya pergi, si Beru Sibou merasa kehilangan segalanya dan hatinya sedih. Karena
sejak kecil mereka juga tak pernah berpisah satu hari. Si Beru Sibou berharap saudaranya Tare
Iluh cepat kembali setelah berhasil mengumpulkan uang di luar negeri.

Harapan Berib Sibou hanyalah harapan yang sia-sia saja. Karena apa yang dilakukan kakaknya
Tare Iluh adalah berjudi saat mendapat uang. Karena itu, dia tak pernah berhasil mengumpulkan
uang. Padahal, uang yang telah terkumpul segera habis karena ia selalu berjudi judi kalah.
Namun, ia terus berjudi, karena ia berharap suatu saat nanti ia akan menang banyak. Akhirnya
hutang judinya ditumpuk dan dia tidak bisa beraninya. Karena si Tare Iluh tidak bisa membayar
hutangnya, maka dia diletakkan di suatu tempat. Karena itu, si Tare Iluh tak bisa kembali lagi
bertemu saudaranya Beru Sibou yang setiap hari menantikan kedatangannya dengan perasaan
sedih.

Sudah terlalu lama si Tare Iluh tidak kembali, jadi Beru Sibou pergi mencarinya meski dia tidak
tahu dimana adiknya berada. Ketika Beru Sibou berjalan melalui hutan untuk menemukan
saudaranya, dia bertemu dengan seorang pria yang bertanya ke mana Beru Sibou pergi. Dia
mengatakan bahwa dia sedang mencari saudaranya bernama Tare Iluh yang sudah lama pergi ke
luar negeri. Tapi dia tidak tahu dimana adiknya berada.

Kemudian pria tersebut mengatakan kepada Beru Sibou bahwa dia pernah mendengar cerita
seseorang tentang seorang pemuda bernama Tare Iluh. Menurut cerita pria tersebut, Tare Iluh
suka berjudi tapi tidak pernah menang. Akhirnya dia dikurung karena tidak bisa membayar
hutang judinya. Tapi pria itu juga tidak tahu dimana Tare Iluh dikurung.

Mendengar cerita tentang pria itu, Beru Sibou terisak-isak. Karena kasihan melihat dia, pria
tersebut menyarankan agar Beru Sibou memanjat pohon tinggi. Saat sampai di puncak ia
bernyanyi untuk memanggil saudaranya si Tare Iluh. Siapa tahu panggilan si Beru Sibou akan
didengar oleh saudaranya.

Setelah pria itu lewat, si Beru Sibou memanjat pohon kayu tinggi. Setelah sampai di puncak,
bernyanyi si Beru Sibou sambil menangis memanggil saudaranya si Tare Iluh. Ia juga
menyanyikan kata-kata yang memohon agar Tare Iluh dibebaskan dari yang lain. Selanjutnya,
saat bernyanyi dan menangis, Beru Sibou menghimbau kepada Yang Mahakuasa bahwa semua
hutang saudara kandungnya atas Tare Iluh dapat diselesaikan dengan air mata, dengan rambut
dan anggota badannya. Karena itulah yang bisa dia berikan untuk membayar hutang kakaknya.
Si Beru Sibou juga memohon agar orang lain bisa menggunakan air matanya, rambutnya dan
semua tungkainya demi mereka.

Tak lama setelah si Beru Sibou selesai mengucapkan permohonannya itu sambil menangis,
menjelmalah dia menjadi pohon enau. Dengan begitu maka air matanya menjelma menjadi nira
enau, rambutnya menjelma menjadi ijuk dan seluruh anggota tubuhnya menjelma menjadi bagian
dari pohon enau. Semuanya itu dapat dimanfaatkan orang sesuai dengan permohonan si Beru
Sibou.

Di kemudian hari pohon enau yang merupakan penjelmaan si Beru Sibou dapat disadap orang
untuk diambil niranya yang merupakan penjelmaan air mata si Beru Sibou. Ijuk enau yang
merupakanpenjelmaan dari rambut si Beru Sibou juga diambil orang untuk dimanfaatkan untuk
berbagai keperluan. Begitu juga bagian-bagian lain yang merupakan penjelmaan dari anggota
tubuh si Beru Sibou dapat dimanfaatkan orang untuk berbagai keperluan.

Karena diyakini bahwa pohon enau adalah penjelmaan dari si Beru Sibou maka pada masa
dahulu di Tanah Karo terdapat kebiasaan untuk menyanyikan pohon enau pada waktu
menyadapnya untuk mendapatkan nira.
