I. What are the issues and problems in Philippine education?

Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it
today.

1. Graft and corruption is getting worse in our country. The department of education and
the educational systems in general will be a big victim of this. Corruption is more
detrimental than corruption in any other sectors. Corruption threatens equal access,
quantity and quality of education. Its consequences are particularly harsh for the poor
who without access to education or with no alternative but low-quality education, have
a little chance to escape a life of poverty.

2. Reality in the Philippine Education Budget as a second priority is the top problem in the
educational system. even though the 1987 philippine constitution article xiv section 5
(5) states that " the state shall assign the highest budgetary priority to education and
ensure that teaching will attract and retain its rightful share of best available talents
through adequate remuneration and other means of job satisfaction and fulfillment," in
reality, most of the budget of the government goes to the payment of debt and
corruption.

3. Low of salary on the teaching workforce the low of salary for the teachers "demoralizes"
them. "if you want the best minds to teach, you must give good salary to them." Yes,
today the issue on the salary for teachers are being resolved. But for the most part,
teachers who are doing great should have more.

4. The curriculum that were set by the department of education and the commission on
higher education is not enough to let our students to be globally competitive. some said
that some subjects and even the curriculum are lacking. for example, mathematics and
science, both are the majority of most of the educational institution in different countries.
but in our country and in our school, many said that these subjects should be taught
comprehensively and intensively because this will serve as the backbone of the
countrys development and of our school in the near future.

5. The quality and proficiency of the teachers. according to a recent news article, filipino
teachers lack proficiency in english, science and mathematics. many said that these
areas should have been trained comprehensively since as teachers of these subjects,
should be able to teach the students with a more quality for future growth.

6. The ratio of teachers to students. in a typical public school, in every one teacher there
are 60-70 students in a class! in addition, the poorly ventilated and dilapidated
classrooms that adds up to the worsening situation of both the teacher and student
inside these classrooms. The school facilities can also be a factor of the problem. the
Philippines, both in private and public, lacks sophisticated laboratories and facilities to
cater the needs of the students. for example, many public schools are still lacking the
basic computer laboratories and it is so ironic that computer nowadays, computer
 education is crucial for future computer studies student. without proper training in
computer, how can a student be competitive and computer literate?

7. Rising cost of sending a child to school. private schools charges skyrocketing tuition
and miscellaneous fees to a student that parents are having a hard time to cope with
the rising cost of education. even sending a child in a public school doesnt fare better
since even the poorest of the poor cannot afford to send a child in school.

II. Give proposal to solve the problem

As a former student and now also as a teacher I believe that it is our won small efforts
that will matter most. There will not be an overnight success on this issues and problems.
But what we can do as citizens is to start from ourselves, teach and perform to our
highest capacity, influence students to be at their best, and most importantly is to support
the working and implementing bodies in the education department.
I believe that the people in the educational system are best in what they do, our job is to
support their projects. Lets submit to their requirements and recommendations, practice
and apply it to our endeavors and see the progress. Evaluate the program and see how
it goes.
There are reforms and programs that were being implemented by CHED and DepEd as
I have seen on the Roadmap for Public Education. Some which are the implementation
of K to 12, Introduction of OBE learning, and many more. Those are just examples of the
reforms that we just have to support for us to have a difference in our education
department.

III. What is the impact of globalization in the Philippine Education

Globalization is the brand of today. The boom of globalization has opened gates for
economies both nationwide and worldwide. For the last decades governments get hold
of the systems in taking advantage of the opportunities for international business as well
as venture. Where there are some highly appreciated benefits of globalization to the
world has witnessed some extremely harmful effects of globalization too.

The effects of globalization on education bring about fast expansions in technology and
communications are anticipating changes within learning systems across the world as
ideas, values, and knowledge, changing the roles of students and teachers and
producing change in society from industrialization towards an information-based society.
In the 21st century, education systems deal with the challenge of providing students with
the new knowledge, skills and values needed to be competitive in a global market while
at the same time producing graduates who are responsible adults, good citizens both of
their country and of the world. Thus globalization challenges us to rethink not only how
much education is needed but also its ultimate purposes.
