Penicillin is an invention that paved the way for several discoveries in the medical and
scientific community, not only because it is a vivid example of the results of scientific
observations, but also at a crucial moment in the modern history of mankind. The great
loss of victims in wounds for wound infections was something that worried the nations
involved and the arrival of penicillin in 1928 meant the difference between life and death
for many soldiers.
Was discovered by accident in 1928. A plaque for bacteriological experiments was
accidentally uncovered by Dr. Alexander Fleming in his laboratory in England. An
experimenter on the upper floor was neglected with the mold he was using and part of it
was swept away by an open window. He went to the stagnant cultivation of Staphylococcus
of Fleming. The next day, the Scottish bacteriologist found on the saucer a clear area where
mold penicillin had been killing the bacteria.
Fleming made his discovery a year after the discovery in 1929, and his work to
produce the drug massively, in collaboration with scientists Ernst Boris Chain and
Howard Walter Florey, earned him a Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine In 1945.
