Nammalvar and Alwarthirunagari with Nine Garudasevai

On south bank of tamabarani river, 3 Temples are situated and On north bank of tambarani river , other 6 Temples are situated. Azhvar
thirunagari(Thirukkurugur) is the birth place of Nammalvar. The 9 Garudasevai is the important festival in this place. Nammalvar 9th C. AD,
Azhwar Thirunagari (Kurugur) Vaigaasi Vishaakam (Vishaaka) For sixteen long years, Maran the nick name of Nammalvar sat motionless
under the tamarind tree in Adinathar temple without food or drink,

In the Nava Garuda Sevai, 9 Perumals are seated on Garuda vaahanam. Azhwar is seated on a Hamsa vaahanam and his dearest devotee,
Madurakavi Azhwar is seated on Pirangi Naarkaali (a chair). This festival starts in the eveing after 9.00 PM and continues up to next day
early morning.

Azhwar waits just outside the Main Entrance of the temple. The temple doors are closed and Alwar along with his favourite devotee
Madurakavi Alwar wait for the Garudaseva Utsavam to happen. The Main doors are opened and Azhwar is the first to have darsanam of
Perumal. Perumal is given Mangala Aarthi and managalasaasanam done to the particular Perumal by the Azhwar, Then Main doors are
closed and the next Garudasevai Perumal comes to the Main doors and the mangalasasanam done to the next perumal and so on.
Nine Vishnu Temples on either side of Tamirabarani River are
called Nava Tirupathi temples.

Sri Vaikuntam : We can see the towering structure of Vaigunda Nadhar temple at
Srivaikuntam which is about 30Kms. from Trinelveli on the Trichendur Road. The Lord here is
known as Kallapran. It is one of Nava Tirupathi Temples. Time: 7 a.m. to 12 noon. & 5 p.m. to 8
p.m.

Thiruvaraguna Mangai :This temple is about 2kms east of Srivaigundam and is known to
many as the Vishnu temple at Natham. Lord Vijayaasanar is seen here. Time : 8 a.m. to 12 noon.
& 1 p.m.. to 6 p.m.

Thirupuliangudi : 1km from Natham, 2km from Srivaikundam is the Lord Kasina Vendhar
temple at Thirupuliangudi; Godess Sridevi and Bhoodevi are seen here. Time: 8 a.m. to 12 noon.
& 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Irattai Thirupathigal : Two temples are situated in 100 yards of each other at
Tholaivillimangalam. The 1st of two temples has Lord Devapiran in a standing posture facing
east. At the 2nd temple one can see Lord Aravinda Lochanar. Time 8 a.m. to 1 a.m. & 2.30 p.m.
to 5.30 p.m.

Thirukuzhandai : This temple is 10kms east of Srivaigundam. This place is called as


Perunkulam. The Lord here is known as Maayakoothan. Time 7.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. & 4.30
p.m. to 7.30 p.m.

Then Thiru perai : On to the south bank of river Tamirabarani at Then Thiru Perai the big
Nigaril Mugil Vannan Temple is situated. The Lord called also as Makara Nedunkuzhai kathan.
Time : 7.30 a.m. 12 noon & 5 p.m. to 8.30 p.m.

Thirukkolur : 3kms South west of Tiruperai is the Vaitha Maa Nidhu Temple. This is birth
place of Madura kavi Azhwar, the ardent devotee of Nammazhvar. Time 7.30 a.m. to 12 noon &
1 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Alwar Thirunagari (Thiru Kurugoor) :The birth place of Swami Nammazhvar and
Manavala mamuni. The last halt at the Nava Thirupathi temples is the Aadhi Nadhan temple at
Alwar Thirunagari (Kurugur)). This is on the way to Thiruchendur from Trinelveli. It is said Adhi
Nadhan emerged on his own from the earth. Vaishnavities attach very great reverence and
respect to Namazhvar. There is separate Sannidhi to him at this temple. Time 7 a.m. to 12 noon
& 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Travel Tips for visiting Azhvar nava thiruppathi Divya desams

To visit Navathirupathi, Thirunelveli is the best place to stay. There


are plenty of trains to Tirunelveli from Madras. From Thirunelveli
every 15 minutes buses are available to Tiruchendur.All these divya
desams are located on the Thirunelveli - Thiruchendur route only.

Srivaikundam:
From Tirunelveli,Srivaikuntam is 25 Kms.on tirunelveli-tiruchendur
road. In Srivaikuntam vans and taxis are available.

Srivaikuntam- First thiruppathi. Darshan time: 6-12am,4-8pm

Varagunamangai:
This place is more commonly known as "Natham". This divya desam is
1Km. from srivaikuntam.Darshan time 11-4pm.

Thiruppulingudi:
This Divyadesam is located at about 2 Kms. from Srivaikuntam and 1 Km
from Varagunamangai.
Darshan time: 1Km.11-4pm.

Thirukkulandhai:
This Divyadesam is located at about 8 Kms from Srivaikundam.Darshan
time:.6-12am,4-8pm.

The above 3 Thirupathis are situated on Srivaikuntam- Tuticorin bus


route.Srivaikuntam is Taluk Head quarter.

Tholaivillimangalam:(irattai thiruppathi).
This divya desam is situated in between thirupuliankudi and perunkulam
if you are traveling by taxi or van. There is no service buses are
available.Absolutely no residences and forest temples.( Teak forest)
Dharsan time 11-4 pm

On tirunelveli- tiuchendur road, we can ask campellabad bus stop in
between alwarthirunagari and thenthiruperai Divyadesams. From
campellabad we can cross Tambarabarani river by walk and reach this
divya desam.

In irattai thiruppathi,two temples are located at 500 Mtr. distance


apart.

Then thirupperai:
Thenthiruperai is 31 Kms.from tirunelveli or 3 kms from
Alwarthirunagari on tirunelveli -Tiruchendur road.Dharshan time: 6-
12am,4-8pm

Thirukkurugur:
From Tirunelveli,Alwarthirunagari is 28 kms.on tirunelveli-tiruchendur
road. In alwarthirunagari also vans and taxis are available.Darshan
time: 6-12am,4-8pm.

Thirukkolur:
Thirukolur in between alwarthirunagari and thenthiruperai, get down at
Palkulam stop and temple is 1Km inside from Tirunelveli and
Tiruchendur Road.6-12am,4-8pm

On banks of tambarani river these nine Temples are situated.

On north bank of tambarani river , the following 6 Temples are


situated.

2.Varagunamangai- Swami Vijayasanar
3.Thirupuliyankudi- Swami Kaisanavaandan
4.Thirukulanthai- Swami Mayakoothan

(Thulaivillimangalam) Swami Aravindalochanar

On south bank of tamabarani river, the following 3 Temples are


situated.

1.Alwarthirunagari Swami Aathipiran, Swami Namalwar

2. Thirukolur Swami Vaidamanidhi, Swami


Madhurakavi Alwar

3. Thenthiruperai Swami Maharanedungkuzhaikadar.

Travel Tip: The easy way to visit these eight temples is to reach
Azhvar thirunagari(Thirukkurugur) and from there hire a taxi or van
and in half a day all the temples can be visited. It is also possible to
start the journey from Srivaikundam. In other books you may notice
that the travel information is given with respect to railway station.
Since the railway station at Srivaikundam and Azhvar thirunagari are
far from the town,it is not convenient to use train journey. Also the
frequency of the train service is poor.Bus/Taxi on road is more reliable
and faster.
