Welcome to English IV

The Value of Learning

Realize that learning is a way of life. Through reading literature and writing, we can learn a lot about
others, but perhaps more importantly we can learn about ourselves and our role in this world. In
addition, knowledge is power. If you want power (intellectual, financial, social, etc.), education is the
most certain way to get it. Remember that no one can take your education and knowledge away from
you!

Course Description

English IV is an intensive survey of British Literature from the Anglo-Saxon period to modern times.
Students will read and interact with a broad variety of genres-heroic epics, poetry, short stories, and non-
fiction essays, as well as the novel and a Shakespearean tragedy.

Using text, PowerPoint/digital storytelling, the internet, film, small group activities, writing assignments
(both critical and creative), quizzes and tests, students will prepare for college-level oral and written
communication requirements as they also practice skills needed to help them enter the college.

Course Expectations

I expect that all students will come to class prepared with their notebook, paper, pens/pencils, and other
supplies requested. Students should work hard, especially if they want a good grade in the class.
Participation is necessary and is part of the students' overall grade. For a safe classroom environment to
exist, name-calling and any other offensive actions will be strictly prohibited and will result in immediate
disciplinary action.

Makeup and Late Work

You may make up work due to an absence. IT IS THE STUDENTS RESPONSIBILITY TO COLLECT,
COMPLETE AND TURN IN MAKE-UP WORK.

In general, all makeup work is due within TEN school days of your absence. However, I am NOT
responsible for your make up work. You need to come before or after school and understand that make
up work is YOUR responsibility!

Assignments Due-All major/written assignments are due at the beginning of class on the
deadline date unless an extension has been granted PRIOR to the deadline. If you were absent when
the assignment was due, I expect the assignment to be turned in as soon as you return to school.

NOTE: I do not accept late work without an excused absence. No exceptions. Any work that
is not turned in at the required time will result in a zero for that assignment. This includes
essays and projects!

Consequences:
1. Verbal Warning
2. Call for an administrator
3. Phone call to parent/guardian
4. Discipline referral

Any student who continuously or severely disrupts class will be sent immediately to an administrator for
disciplinary action.

Everyone has the right and the responsibility to learn the material presented in class. No one has
the right to prevent others from learning.

Plagiarism and Academic Dishonesty

Plagiarism is the act of taking the words of another person and using them as ones own. This includes
copying words or ideas from a book, magazine or other print source, downloading material from the
Internet and copying work from another student. In the last case, both the student who does the copying
and the student who allows the copying are equally guilty.

Plagiarism, whether intentional or unintentional, results in a zero for the work involved. Academic
integrity involves respect for the academic property of others and will be covered at great length
throughout the course of the semester.

If a student is found to have committed academic dishonesty, there will be a zero tolerance policy. The
student and any other students involved will receive a zero for the assignment. Any further offenses
will be handled through a school administrator.

Bottom Line: Do NOT cheat, copy, borrow, or steal ANYONE elses work but your own. You are smart
on your own; do not sell yourself short!

Cell-phones/other interruptions

If seen or heard, cell-phones, iPods and other personal electronic devices will be confiscated in
accordance with district policy. Please also take care of all personal business (water, locker, bathroom,
office visits) between classes. I will give you the same courtesy I expect; in other words, give me your
best ninety minutes every day and Ill give you mine!
