La historia narra la vida de Rodin Rasklnikov, un estudiante en la capital de la Rusia

Imperial, San Petersburgo. Este joven ve truncados sus sueos por la miseria en la cual se
ven envueltos l y su familia (su madre y hermana), miseria que le obliga a congelar sus
estudios por falta de dinero. En bsqueda de dinero llega a conocer a una vil y egosta
anciana prestamista, en cuya casa empea algunos objetos de valor.

Rasklnikov decide asesinar a la anciana, no tanto con el objeto de robarle -de hecho,
abandona en un escondrijo y no hace uso del botn que saca apresuradamente de la casa
de la prestamista tras su asesinato- sino por considerarla un ser humano intil para la
sociedad, un piojo que slo puede entorpecer a quienes la rodean. Sin embargo, la
posicin de Rasklnikov es mucho ms compleja: ha asumido que la sociedad se halla
dividida en dos tipos de seres humanos; aquellos superiores que tienen derecho a cometer
crmenes por el bienestar general de la sociedad y aquellos inferiores que deben estar
sometidos a las leyes, cuya nica funcin es la reproduccin de la raza humana. La nica
justificacin moral que puede tener la accin de Rasklnikov es que l sea un hombre
superior, en cuyo caso no ha de sentir ningn tipo de arrepentimiento por su accin. En
sus vagabundeos por San Petersburgo, Rasklnikov conoce al antiguo funcionario
Marmeldov, un bebedor que acaba muriendo, borracho, atropellado por un caballo, y a su
desgraciada familia, a la que Rasklnikov ayuda econmicamente, con los escasos rublos
que recibe de su madre, tras la muerte de Marmeldov. La hija mayor de esta familia,
Sonia, una abnegada joven que se prostituye para ayudar a su madrastra y sus hermanos,
ser la nica persona a la que Rasklnikov confiese explcitamente su crimen. La
culminacin psicolgica del libro ocurre cuando Rasklnikov, presa de la ansiedad, la
agitacin nerviosa y los remordimientos, asume que no puede convertirse en un hombre
superior y que por lo tanto pertenece al tipo de hombre que tanto desprecia. Rasklnikov
se entrega entonces a las autoridades, pese a que no existe ninguna prueba concluyente
contra l y un inocente se ha declarado culpable, vctima de las presiones policiales. Es
enviado a las crceles en Siberia para cumplir su condena y Sonia (hija de Marmeldov)
se va con l a acompaarlo al presidio, en donde Rasklnikov se da cuenta de que la ama
y que quiere terminar su condena para vivir junto a ella.

A continuacin un resumen de los hechos ms importantes de cada parte:

Primera parte: Empieza con la visita de "ensayo" que hace Rasklnikov a casa de la
vieja. Luego cuenta los conflictos internos que tiene ste hasta que se decide y, en el
ltimo captulo, mata a la vieja usurera.

Segunda parte: En su mayora se lleva a cabo durante la enfermedad o delirio

de Rasklnikov, quin es cuidado por Razumijin. Empieza con su visita a la comisara
e incluye hechos muy importantes como: cuando esconde lo robado, la entrevista con
Luzhin, la entrevista con Zamtov, el accidente de Marmeldov, etc. Termina con la
llegada de la madre y la hermana de Rodia a San Petersburgo.
 Tercera parte: Se inicia con la dura entrevista entre Rasklnikov con su hermana y
madre, luego prosigue con su reconciliacin. Un hecho muy importante y uno de los de
mayor tensin en la novela se produce en esta parte, la entrevista con el juez de
instruccin, el cual le tiende varias trampas a Rasklnikov con el objeto de que
confiese. Termina con la repentina aparicin de Svidrigailov, el acosador de su
hermana.

Cuarta parte: Empieza con la extraa entrevista entre Rodia y Svidrigailov, el cual
deja notar malas y extraas intenciones. Despus ocurre la ruptura entre Dunia y su
novio, hecho seguido de la conversacin entre Sonia y Rasklnikov. Concluye con
otra, tambin cargada de tensin, entrevista con el juez de instruccin, el cual casi
logra sacarle la confesin a Rasklnikov, hecho evitado por un extrao suceso.

Quinta parte: Comienza con los vengativos pensamientos de Luzhine, los cuales
despus los pone en prctica queriendo hacer quedar a Sonia como ladrona para as
indisponer a Rasklnikov con su familia. Hecho que fue evitado por Rasklnikov y un
amigo de Luzhin, escapando este sin volver a aparecer en la novela. Luego Sonia
huye y Rasklnikov va con ella y le confiesa el crimen, para despus enterarse de la
locura y muerte de la madrastra de Sonia. Culmina cuando Svidrigilov le cuenta entre
risas a Rodia que escuch su confesin a Sonia y que puede hundirlo.

Sexta parte: Rasklnikov est muy pensativo respecto a qu hacer. De pronto

aparece el juez de instruccin y le dice que est convencido de su culpabilidad y que
es mejor que se entregue. Despus Rodia va a hablar definitivamente con Svidrigilov
para tratar de sacar sus verdaderas intenciones, cosa que no logra. Svidrigailov le
cuenta a la hermana de Rodia la verdad sobre el crimen para luego tratar de violarla,
pero en el ltimo momento se arrepiente y la deja ir, al da siguiente se suicida. Al final
Rodia se despide de su madre, y despus de hablar con su hermana y con Sonia, se
entrega.

Eplogo: Rasklnikov va a Siberia condenado a ocho aos de trabajos forzados, Sonia

decide acompaarlo. La hermana de Rasklnikov se casa con Razumijin y luego su
madre muere, aquejada de locura febril y senil. Rodin en la crcel todava tiene
pensamientos negativos y siente odio y repugnancia por los dems reos. Pero al pasar
un ao, y luego de enfermarse, se arrepiente de todo y se da cuenta de que ama a
Sonia, quedando sobreentendido que luego de los siete aos restantes, Rodin se
casara con Sonia y juntos, empezaran una nueva vida.
The story chronicles the life of Rodion Raskolnikov, a student in the capital of Imperial Russia,
St. Petersburg. This young man sees his dreams truncated by the misery in which they are
involved him and his family (his mother and sister), poverty that forces him to freeze his
studies for lack of money. In search of money gets to know a vile and selfish old lender, with

action. In his wanderings in St. Petersburg, the former official knows Raskolnikov Marmeladov,
dying just a drinker, drunk, run over by a horse, and her unfortunate family, which Raskolnikov
help financially, with few rubles received from his mother after Marmeladov death. The eldest
daughter of this family, Sonia, a young prostitute selfless to help her stepmother and siblings,
will be the only person to whom Raskolnikov confesses his crime to explicitly. The
psychological climax of the book occurs when Raskolnikov prey to anxiety, nervous agitation
and remorse, assumes that it can not become a superior man, and therefore belongs to the
type of man he so despises. Raskolnikov is then delivered to the authorities, although there is
no conclusive evidence against him and an innocent is convicted, the victim of police
harassment. He is sent to prison in Siberia to serve his sentence and Sonia (daughter of
Marmeladov) goes with him to accompany him to the prison, where Raskolnikov realizes he
loves her and he wants to finish his sentence to live with it.

A summary of the most important facts of each part:

Part Six: Raskolnikov is very thoughtful about what to do. Suddenly the judge appears and says
he is convinced of his guilt and it is better to be delivered. After Rodia definitely going to talk
with Svidrigailov to try to get their true intentions, which fails. Svidrigailov tells Rodia's sister
the truth about the crime and then tried to rape her, but at the last moment repent and let go,
the next day he commits suicide. At the end Rodia goodbye to his mother, and after talking
with her sister and with Sonia, is delivered.

Epilogue: Raskolnikov goes to Siberia sentenced to eight years' hard labor, Sonia decides to
accompany him. Raskolnikov's sister marries Razumikhin and then his mother dies, feverish
and suffering from senility. Rodion in prison still have negative thoughts and feel hatred and
disgust for the other inmates. But over one year, and then getting sick, he regrets everything
and realizes who loves Sonia, on the understanding that after the remaining seven years,
Rodion marry Sonia and together, begin a new life.
