LANDING CRAFT SILHOUETTES
These landing craft silhouettes are to be used to study the beaching of craft in conjunction with U. S. Chart-Maps
Nos. 1039 - 1039a - 1040 - 1041, Belle-He-en-Mer, France, West Coast, and accompanying Beach Profiles.

HOW TO USE SILHOUETTES: (1.) Determine the height of the tide for a given instant from the tide curve ac
companying the Chart-Maps. (2.) Draw this height of water horizontally to the beach profile. (3.) Apply the Silhouette of
a given landing craft so that the waterline of the craft coincides with the tide - line as found in 2 above. (4.) Slide the land
ing craft along horizontally until it "beaches" on the profile. (5.) The depth and extent of water remaining to be crossed by
troops and vehicles may be directly scaled, and the location of the beaching recorded in the Section - Map and Chart- Map.

NOTE: This sheet of silhouettes to be used only with U.S. Chart-Maps. Nos. 1039-1039a -1040 -1041 Belle-lle-en-
Mer, France, West Coast.

The vertical and horizontal scales of these silhouettes are the same as the Beach Profiles. Horizontal scale 1 inch
equals 100 feet, vertical scale 1 inch equals 10 feet, an exaggeration of 10 times. The silhouettes above the waterline are
drawn approximately as they would normally appear without any distortion of scale relationship.

2. The Beach Profiles shown here are distorted, the ver

been kept the same as that of the accompanying map.
Owing to the distortion, the slopes appear much steeper
than they actually are, but more accurate vertical measure •\. .V \:

5. The landing craft silhouette transparent accompanying
the profile sheet is used in the following way:
The hour contemplated for the beaching of the craft
is marked on the tide curve (for the day) and the height VERTICAL BEACH PROFILE DD
of the water drawn to the profile. To this water-level, the
waterline of the landing craft is adjusted, and the silhouette
slid until touching the profile. In this manner the beaching
of craft for an entire operation can be studied.
