NIIT Assessment System: NAS
The objectives of developing an integrated and centralized examination system called
NIIT Assessment System (NAS):
Improve productivity and operational efficiency
Gain maintenance advantage for updating question bank
Ensure academic integrity & security
Make NIIT assessment at par with the industry standards
Enhance exam conducting and taking experience

The test items repository is centralized, which means the test items need not be sent to the
centers for local integration. Thus, any change in the test item happens in the central
repository only. Thereafter, all the tests generated will have the updated version of the
questions.

The same test item can be attached to various tests. Therefore, there is no redundancy and
traceability of the test items is easy. Any change in the test item ensures that all the tests
using that item are using the latest version.

The new assessment system is tightly integrated with eNCOREVista for test scheduling as
well as for marks updation. In this system, the test can only be conducted on the appraisal
date mentioned in the SAP log. In addition, this simplifies the process of scheduling and
marks import with the click of a button.

After benchmarking with other industries, the new test engine is designed on the hybrid
model. This means it is neither completely offline nor online. In this hybrid model, the
dependency on Internet availability is only at the time of downloading the test packs and
uploading the student responses. The test pack is the question paper that gets generated by
the online NAS Server. Once the student responses are uploaded to the online server, the
online system evaluates student responses, and students can view their score sheet from
NIIT student website, www.niitstudent.com/intl/. This makes the new system at par with
the industry standards.

In addition, the new system can support various types of test items that the other
industries are supporting like MCQs/MMCQs/Subjective/coding.

The new assessment system provides a proctors interface to enable better control with the
proctor/invigilator. This interface helps the proctor in enabling/ approving a students
test once he logs in. It also helps the proctor monitor the various states of the student
taking tests. eg. Absent-> Test Started->In Progress-> Submitted->Graded etc

The new assessment system also enhances exam taking experience for the students. The
students get a bigger interface to read the questions and view the associated images on the
same screen. An exhaustive test summary screen helps him in reviewing attempted/

unattempted/ bookmarked questions before submitting the test. In addition, if during the
test any student-node gives problems, the student can be moved to continue the test from
that stage to another node without losing time.

The benefits of developing an integrated and centralized examination system to various

users are as follows:

Exception Handling

During the test, the following exceptions can occur:

Exception 1: A proctor sends the appraisal log to NAS but does not get any
proctor key on center e-mail address.
Solution: The proctor can connect to NAS using proctor application to download the
test packs. He/she will find the Resend Test Key button on the Test Pack Download
screen. The proctor can now click on this button to get the proctor key on center e-mail
address.

Resending the Test Key

The email received on clicking the Resend Test Key button can easily be identified by

The proctor can click the Resend Test Key button only for appraisals where the Email
Sent column shows YES.

Exception 2: On the proctoring screen, some extra names are appearing, which
are not in the current appraisal log.
Solution: Some of the students might have become defaulters/drop outs after sending
the appraisal log to NAS. In the proctoring screen, the proctor has the provision to
allow only valid students. For more details, refer to the topic, Approving a Test from
the Proctoring Assessments section.

the test, you need to unlock the user test. For more details, refer to the topic, Unlock
User Account from the Proctoring Assessments section.

Exception 4: One of the student nodes monitor fails while a student is giving the
exam but the CPU is still working.
Solution: Remove the network cable or switch off the student node immediately to
stop the time increment. The student can start the test from another node. The student
will lose marginal time, which got consumed in realizing the issue and either removing
the network cable or switching off the student node. To enable student to resume the
test, you need to unlock the user test. For more details, refer to the topic, Unlock User
Account from the Proctoring Assessments section.

Exception 5: A batch could not start the test at the test start time because of some
valid reasons.
Solution: The batch can start the test at any other time on the same day.

Exception 6: At the time of giving exam, Internet connectivity is not available.

Solution: No need to worry, the test can be conducted without Internet connectivity
provided the test pack is downloaded in advance.

Exception 7: At the time of uploading the responses of the test, Internet

connectivity is not available and students receive an error message.
Solution: The proctor can ask the students to wait for Internet connectivity to restore
till the batch end time. If Internet connectivity is still not restored, then the proctor
assures the students that he/she will upload the tests to the centralized NAS server. To
do the same, refer to the topic, Upload Student Responses from the Proctoring
Assessments section.

the student in same batch and send SAP log again. Otherwise, reinstate student after
the marks import.

Exception 11: A student was a defaulter/drop-out at the time of test conduction

and is ready to reinstate.
Solution: Faculty should ask student to make the payments to cashier and allow him to
take exam.

to the centralized NAS server.
Solution: The system allows transfer only 48 hrs prior to exam. Hence, faculty should
resend the appraisal log.
