Deep groove ball bearings for high temperature applications The SKF range of deep groove ball bearings for high temperature applications provides solutions for various combinations of oper ating temperature and speed, All variants are lubricate forthe life ofthe bearing, ex- cept for open VA201 bearings (that is, wth- cut integral shields) which require relubrication \VAZ28 ~ SKF highest performance at ‘temperatures up to 350°C (660 °F) \VA228 is an excellent choice far machinery operating with low speeds or oscilating rmovernents in combination with very high ‘operating temperatures. This hearing offers tutstanding performance at temperatures Lup to 350 °C (660 *F] through the combina ion ofthe solid graphite cage, an adjusted high temperature bearing radial internal clearance and integral shel. A208 - Improved performance at temperatures up to 350 °C (660 °F) The VA208 bearing is lubricated by a seg) mented graphite cage. The large amount of lubricating graphite gives along service life at temperatures up to 350 °C (660 *F). \Va201 - Basic performance at temperatures up to 250 °C (480 °F) The VA201 bearing is lubricated with a poly alkylene glycol/graphite mixture suitable for temperatures up to 250 °C (480 *F). Version \VA201 is an open bearing without shields) while the 22/VVA201 has an integral shield ‘on bath sides, Both versions are supplied pre-filled with lubricant. VA201 can be re lubricated whilst-22/ VA2O1 is lubricated for the life of the bearing, Depending on the speed and operating temperature, a specia running-in procedure might be recuired (© Lubrication and running in, page 22), 18 Features and benefit of high temperature deep groove ball bearings 1 moneedforrelubrieation! the bearings relate ity sraphte-based nh enperaure Urcans and are ubcked forthe fect he bexing 2 simple replacement the boundary roensions are the Same a thse of stancaa bearings 2 operating temperature upto 350°c(660 7) the neal rai clara UGelubriant are opt speraton a 4 ‘4 protection against contamination thee eengnavon ss 22) pete es ng. 5 Improved runing in ihe entre bearing surfaces Tanganese posprate cated Tablet (Characteristics of high temperature variants for deep groove ball bearings Characteristic Variant yazan’ va2as vane Lubrication ype Palaver acol/ Segmented age Corenet cage graphtemature made 'graphte made o graphite Phosphated rings, rolling yes yes yes clements and cages NSF Ha food grade ve yes yes ‘Shields (esignaion sufx22) yes/no open bearing) yes yes Relubrication free vyes/ nolopen bearing) yes yes Maximum operating 250°C (480°F) «350°C (660°F) 350°C (660°F) temperature Limiting speed [rn 4 50044, 4 500K 900044, gag a a BF TT SKF Design of bearing arrangements Location of bearings The selection of shaft and housing fis for high temperature deep groove ball bearings depends on the bearing operating condition and bearing size. An appropriate fit is need- ed to locate the shaft, provide satisfactory support, allow for thermal expansion and reach the stated maximum operating bear- ing temperature (-> table 4) For moderate loads (0.035 C< P < 0.05 C) the shaft seats for Y bearings should be ma~ chined to ah7© tolerance. Far light loads and ow speeds, a h8© shaft tolerances sufficient All 150 tolerance classes are valid with the envelope requirementin accordance with 1s0:24405-1:2010 Mounting SKF high temperature Y-bearings ané Y-bearing units have a clearance fit for the recommended shaft diameters, They can therefore be sid into positon ane secured with the grub (set) screws on the inner ring, ‘SKF high temperature bearings (except high temperature V-bearings and-bearing Units) should always be hot mounted to Fig. High temperature Y-bearings with inte grated shields and fingers and without lubrication holes (2FW) 2ewiva201 2rwive22, 2 reduce the mounting ferce andthe risk of ‘racking the graphite lubricant. Induction heaters the preferred choi . bearing during mounting Sumerging the SKF high temperature bearings in hot oil is not recommended since the oil remaining in the bearing might car- bonize later during operation. Do net use impact maunting methods such as hammer or bearing fitters because the impacts can ‘make the graphite lubricant crack wheat Operating environment Since al high temperature bearings are supplied without preservative els and must be used without grease or cil lubrication, the anti-corrasion property ofthe bearings is limited, Therefore, the bearings should be sed in a dry enviranment or with a proper sealing arrangement to keep the bearings ay. The most common sealing akernatives fer high temperature deep groove ball bear- ings incorporate integra or external shields or labyrinth seals, These arrangements have a rather low complexity and none of these arrangements are capable of keeping the bearing dryin a wet environment. Sealing solutions igh temperature deep groove ball bearings ‘am be protected from contaminants by ei: ther integral shields, external shields ora combination of both For high temperature bearings, metalic shields are the primary recommendation when a capping device with iow complexity 's required, Shiels prevent the ingress of sold contaminants into the bearing. They are non-contact, generate almost no fri and do net wear. Due to the material and design, they are particularly wel suited for high temperatures. High temperature deep groove ball bear- ings with designation suffix 27 have dgrated shields, but the VA201 variants also available as an open bearing (> fig. 2). The shields on a 2Z/VA201 bearing enable the bearing to be filed with twice the amount of polyalkylene glycol/graphite lubricant thats used in an open VAZ01 bearing The capping device on high temperature Y-bearings (designation suffix 2) consists (of a shield and a flinger that create @ narrow ‘ap labyrinth seal (> fig. 1), Tables Fits fo high temperature deep groove ball bearings on sold stel shafts orn east ron and eel housings Conditions Shaft diameter Retatng inner rng load a Stationary innerring load all Shaft Housing {lerance tolerance KO ro 6® ao Fig.2 High temperature deep groove ball beatings and integrated shields (22) ee vazat 22va201 ain 2zvaz08 22NA22B SKF In many cases, the integral shields are sufficient to keep contaminants out of the bearing, However, in sore cases, the integrated shields are insufficient, and so adeitional external shields should be con- sidered — either Nios rings (> fig. 3), SKF sealing washers (- fig. 4) or custom made seals Thermal axial expansion of shaft ‘Te accommodate thermal axial expansion ofthe shaft in Y-bearing unt arrangements, the shaft on the non-locating side should be provided with ether one, or two grooves, located 120° apart, te engage with modified grub screws + Hexagon socket grub (set) screws with a dog point. in accordance with 150 4028:2003, but witha fie thread according te table 5.
