Course Objectives:
This course includes a discussion of all factors that influence the distribution
and abundance of organisms. We examine both biotic (living) and abiotic (non-
living) elements of the environment that influence the distribution and
abundance of organisms. Population, community, and ecosystem level ecology
are discussed, especially in light of man's influence on nature and nature's
influence on man. You will also be expected to acquire an understanding of
scientific methods as fundamental mechanisms for critical analysis and
problem solving. This course will fulfills the general education requirements
for laboratory science as it will satisfy the goals and objectives of Virginia
Standard of Learning (SOL). Therefore, you need this course to graduate.
Expectations:
o Attendance: Please notify me in advance if you will miss a class. Attendance
is considered part of participation.
o Mathematical Skills: Biology is a quantitative and qualitative science; it
requires familiarity with basic mathematical skills. You are expected to
know how to perform basic high school statistics.
o Computer Skills: Familiarity with Window-based personal computer, Excel,
Word processing, PowerPoint, and the Internet are essential.
o You are expected to abide by the WAHS honor and dress code.
o No food is permitted in class.
o Any form of cheating or plagiarism in this class will result to zero on the
assignment to all involved.
Course Content and Instructional Methods:
The subject matter of this course is delivered in form of lectures, class
discussions, field-trip/outdoor investigation, assigned journal article,
presentations, and laboratory experiments. Course content will fit appropriate
level of this class.
Homework:
Homework will be assigned on a regular basis or at my discretion.
Grading:
Each activity will align to PowerSchool total points grading rubric.
