Social Studies Project: Native Americans

This project will give you the opportunity to learn more about Native Americans in North America. Select an item
from the list below.

CHOICE #1 - A diorama of one of the following:

a.) Eastern Woodland Indians

b.) Plains Indians
c.) Southwest Indians
d.) Northwest Coast Indians

You may make a model of a village, Indians hunting animals found in their region, a Native American home found in
the region or something else. Use your social studies book and other resources (library, Internet, etc.) to learn
about the scene you plan to create. You must create the majority of the objects in your diorama . Store bought
items and toys will result in a lower score. Dioramas will be graded on accuracy, your effort, quality and your
presentation.
*DIORAMA MUST BE PRESENTED AND EXPLAINED TO CLASS*

CHOICE #2 - A poster board describing a Native American cultural group (Eastern Woodland, Plains,
Southwest, Northwest Coast) we will study in class.

For example, you could divide the poster board into four sections.
Each section would show the following:
a.) Draw/show how the group got its food.
b.) Draw/show how the group built their houses.
c.) Draw/show what the environment was like in the region.
d.) Draw/show what kind of tools and technology the group had.
Use drawings, pictures and written descriptions on the poster board. The majority of your graphics must be
original, not printed or cut out of books.
*MUST BE PRESENTED AND EXPLAINED TO THE CLASS*
CHOICE #3 - A written research report about ONE of the following cultural groups of Indians: Eastern
Woodland, Plains, Northwest Coast or Southwest Indians.

Your paper must be at least 1 page typed or 2 pages neatly hand written.
Paper must have a one-paragraph introduction.
At least one paragraph on how the group got its food (Did they hunt? What did they hunt? Did they
farm? How did they?).
At least one paragraph on how they built their houses (What material did they use?).
At least one paragraph on what the environment was like in their area (How did the environment affect
their lives? How did they use the environment to survive?).
At least one paragraph on what type of tools they used (What were their tools made from? How were
they used? What were the tools used for?).
Paper must have a one-paragraph conclusion/summary.
Use at least 2 sources (social studies book, Internet, library book) to find information for your paper.
If your paper is copied from a book or off of the Internet, you will get an E and you will have
to do it over.
