1. Frequencies to be used':

(a) Naval Gunfire Control Net, Frequency 3845 (Green River):

Guarded by:

(1) Regimental and Divisional Naval Gunfire Liaison Of

ficers. . . .

(2) Corps Naval Gunfire Officer,

(3) All firing ships during fire support assignments.

(4), Fire Support Group and Unit Commanders,

(5) The Commander of the Transport Area Screen.

(6) The Naval'Gunfire Control Officer aboard, the flagship.

This net will be used for sill gunfire support requests and for

administrative traffic relative to naval gunfire except as

noted in (b) below.. Fire Support Ships will immediately set

watch upon assuming a status in the following list:

(1) Those specifically designated as stand-by ships.

(2) Those assigned special missions.

(b) Naval Gunfire Overload Circuit, Frequency 3905 (Stew Pot):

The OTC will guard this circuit continuously from 0600K on

Dog Day until no longer required. Any ship or shore party

concerned with Naval Gunfire Support may come up-on this

circuit and clear traffic to the OTC when the Naval Gunfire

Control Net is crowded but will not secure the Naval Gunfire

Control Net to do so. This overload circuit is intended for

reports to the OTC from ships and shore, points who may have

the necessary extra equipment. • ,

Naval Gunfire Control Officer. The frequency assigned to any

one SFC Party will not be changed until necessary. All SFC

Parties must be prepared to operate on any spotting frequency

which may be designated,

(d) Gunboat Control Net, Frequency 39&O (Jam Handy);

To be used for assignments, reports and all administrative

traffic relative to LCI gunboat types. Individual "Gunboats"

when assigned specific missions will, guard the designated

spotting frequency when working with a Shore Fire Control

Party, If no Shore Fire Control Party is involved, such

ships will guard 3980 Ices during the continuance of the

assigned mission. For additional details see subparagraph

2201(c) to Annex (C) to ComPhibsPac OpPlan A25-44.

2. Air Spot; .

(a) VOF planes of VOTC-1 will be available for spotting pur

poses. They-will be employed primarily to spot for destroyers,

but may spot for other fire support ships. Spotting will be

conducted via assigned HF spotting frequencies specified in

paragraph l(c). It is desired that the air spot, and the

Shore Fire Control Party supplement dach other on the same

spotting frequency and firing ships must be alert to aid in

coordinating their activities. Administrative messages to

VOF flights will be handled by Naval Gunfire Control Officer

via VHF Air Spot Control Net (142.56 mcs). VOF aircraft will

follow procedure as per CSP 2156B, but it is necessary that

they control the time of fire because of the impossibility of

continuously maintaining their high speed planes"in position

for observation. The air spot may control the time of firing

salvos by adding "Fire at my command" after the target desig

nation. The firing ship will then announce readiness to fire

and the time of flight and will fire at,the command from air

spot. On subsequent salvos, the spotter will allow sufficient

time for spots to b'e applied and will then order "Standby"

and "Fire", ' •

(b)VO-VCS float planes will be employed to spot for their

parent ships and, if-necessary, for other ships, if weather

conditions permit. Communications Will be via the HF spot

ting frequencies specified in paragraph l(c), coordinated

with Shore Fire Control Parties on the same basis as_out

lined for VOF planes in paragraph 2(a^

When trying to establish contact, firing ships and Shore Fire

Control Parties will tune their receivers as necessary to find

and bring in good signals from the plane '& transmitter. If' the

plane's transmitter is off frequency enough to prevent good

communications for all stations, ships and Shore Fire Control

Parties will zero beat their transmitters to plane's transmitted

frequency.

3• Radar Beacons:

(a) Mark 2 Radar Beacons have been issued on a basis of one

per regiment^ and will be positioned as directed by the Regi

mental Liaison Officer. This beacon will operate with Mark 3,

Mark 4, or Mark 12 radars, by using different capsules.

(b) In all voice radio communications, the beacon will be re

ferred to as "Carburetor". Procedure will be as.prescribed

in Annex (D) to DTB 3-44 (ComDesPac Conf, Ser... 01710 of 26.

August 1944, "Destroyer Gunfire Support in Landing Operations")

with.the f'ollovd.ng modifications:

(1) The firing ship must first send SFCP the type mark

number of the radar which will be used by the firing ship

to get on the beacon. .

(2) The firing ship must also send SFCP the last two

digits of Ships' radar frequency in megacycles, (the

first digit is understood and will'not-be transmitted,

nor will any reference to radar or megacycles as such.

Frequency range for -Mk3 and 4 varies from 680 to 720 mcs

and for Mk 12 from 900 to 985 mcs).

Example: "Set Carburetor on- 15. to'work"with Twelve".

Meaning: "Set Radar Beacon on 915 me for Mk 12 Radar".

(3) The Shore Fire Control will then designate the letter

to be keyed by beacon during tuning.

(c) If other means of communication fail, spots may be trans

mitted by manually keying the beacons, using International

Morse Code and procedure as per CSP 2156B "Shore Fire Control

Code". . ' " /

(b) If no report is Submitted as per (a) above, a report "must

be submitted once in each 24-hour''period. \

(c) Gunboat reports should,be submitted to the Group Commander,

. who will submit one consolidc.te.d report, and who. will arrange

for necessary ammunition transfers between craft uno^er his

command.

All such radio reports should bt submitted during relatively quiet

radio periods, on the overload circuit if practicable,

. 5. Coordination of Naval Gunfire with other types of support re

quires general knowledge of fires being delivered. Each ship, as

it "commences other than scheduled fires, will report (on Naval Gun
fire Control Net) the. target area, the line of fire, the range and

whether 1200 foot-second powder is being used. .'Subsequent reports

of the same nature will be .made only when appreciable changes .arc.

made in any of the items specified. See also paragraph 9 hereof.

6, Unnecessary use of the shackle number cipher sieves up communi

cations and quickly breaks down what little security.the shackle

cipher has. As a general rule, when sending'', information of' our own

installations, locations, or plans, CVJ radio with ECM cipher or a

visual channel should, be used, I£ speed requires use of voice radios,

target areas and grid coordinates from the special gunnery grid sys
tem should be shackled. Information of the enemy, or information

which cannot be used by the enemy in time to affect.our actions may

be transmitted using, unshackled target areas or coordinates. The

need for security must be weight in all cases to keep shackled

transmissions to .aminimum and to avoid sending numerals in "sh;

which, may bo identified with plain numerals and so'break

shackle cipher.

entication. The tendency is to neglect this procedure,, in spite of

the fact that the enemy has had considerable opportunity to study

our voice procedure. All important messages, should be authenticated.

8. Call Signs and Frequencies;

(a) Calls for fire support ships are listed in Pacific Ocean

Areas Combat Call Book (PAC 71).

(b) Calls for SFC's and NLO's are listed below. Each regiment

is given a call number derived by adding a zero to its numerical

organization number. Battalions within regiments are numbered

serially thereafter. The same number will be used by the SFC

and the NLO attached to a battalion.- SFC will be designated by

the prefix "Charlie" (i.e. Charlie 31) while the NLO will' be

designated by the prefix }}Oboe" (i.e. Oboe 31)• Division and
