WELCOME

It is a great honour to be able to present the programme for the

first Lancaster Historical Writing Festival. This remarkable city has
served as the setting for some truly landmark events since its
founding in Roman times, and we could think of no place better to
celebrate the outstanding range of new historical fiction and non-
fiction books.

We are proud to welcome a wealth of local, national, and

international talent to Lancaster to speak about such topics as the
longest siege endured by the British Armed Forces, the history of
the classic crime novel, and Queen Victoria's relationship with her
servant, Abdul. In addition, we are pleased to showcase Lancaster's
history with two events devoted to the city and the important role it
has played in shaping the country's past. Our keynote speakers are
the renownedhistorians and authors Simon Scarrow, Shrabani
Basu, and Alison Weir.

From Ancient Rome to the Second World War via the Wars of the
Roses, the witch trials, and Romanticism, the breathtaking scope of
the writing on show at this year's festival means that no matter
your interests, you are bound to find an event to suit you.

Please join us for what promises to be an incredible feast of stories

and ideas. We look forward to seeing you there.
