Uses
Alkanesfromnonanetohexadecane(analkanewithsixteencarbonatoms)areliquidsofhigherviscosity,whicharelesssuitableforuse
ingasoline.Theyforminsteadthemajorpartofdieselandaviationfuel.Dieselfuelsarecharacterisedbytheircetanenumber,cetane
beinganoldnameforhexadecane.Howeverthehighermeltingpointsofthesealkanescancauseproblemsatlowtemperaturesandin
polarregions,wherethefuelbecomestoothicktoflowcorrectly.Mixturesofthenormalalkanesareusedasboilingpointstandardsfor
simulateddistillationbygaschromatography.[1]

Alkanesfromhexadecaneupwardsformthemostimportantcomponentsoffueloilandlubricatingoil.Inlatterfunctiontheyworkat
thesametimeasanticorrosiveagents,astheirhydrophobicnaturemeansthatwatercannotreachthemetalsurface.Manysolidalkanes
finduseasparaffinwax,usedlubrication,electricalinsulation,andcandles.Paraffinwaxshouldnotbeconfusedwithbeeswax,which
consistsprimarilyofesters.

Alkaneswithachainlengthofapproximately35ormorecarbonatomsarefoundinbitumen(asphalt),used(forexample)inroad
surfacing.However,thehigheralkaneshavelittlevalueandareusuallysplitintoloweralkanesbycracking.
