REPORT OF PROCEEDINGS
CDIO PASUC TRAINING
September 21-25, 2015

The PHILIPPINE ASSOCIATION OF STATE UNIVERISITES AND COLLEGES,


TEMASEK FOUNDATION SINGAPORE POLYTECHNIC TVET (GENERAL) SPECIALISTS
PROGRAMME IN THE PHILIPPINES, held the 2015 CONCEIVE, DESIGN, IMPLEMENT, AND
OPERATE (CDIO) FRAMEWORK FOR RE-THINKING ENGINEERING EDUCATION at the
Rizal Technological University, Mandaluyong City last September 21-25, 2015.

Day 1 Registration of the different member schools started at 8:00 am at the Neptali Gonzales
Hall. The first topic discussed was COMPONENT 1: CDIO Teaching and Learning Framework .
The sub-topics are the following : Overview of CDIO Teaching and Learning Framework ; Sharing
Experiences in Design and Build (Standards 4,5,6,7,8,11); Experiences in Designing and
Implementing an Integrated Curriculum (Standard 1,2,3,7,8,11) - CDIO Skills Set, Infuse CDIO Skill
Sets and Develop CDIO Skill Sets. Engaging Students in their Learning Active Learning (Standard 8);
Engaging Students in their Learning Integrated Learning Experiences (Standard 7); Sustaining
Educational Change with Quality Assurance (Standard 12); The facilitators for day 1 are Engr.
Ireneo Agulto, Engr. Apolinario S. Sollano, Engr. Kristian Arvin L. Ada and Dr. Ruth G. Cabahug.

Day 2 Registration started at 8:00am. The main discussion focused on COMPONENT 2:


DESIGNING AN INTEGRATED CURRICULUM. The sub-topics with corresponding workshops are
held afterwards: Topic 1 was about CDIO Standards and Syllabus followed by a workshop on the
said topic using CDIO Standards; Topic 2 focused on Syllabus and setting the CDIO Skill; After which
the following was held: Group Activity 1: Whats different in teaching and assessing CDIO Skills?
Group Activity 2: Identify Team Roles, Infuse Teamwork Skill and Assess Teamwork Skill.

In the afternoon session, the topics discussed are Curriculum Integration and Roadmap to
Integrating Curriculum with Selected CDIO Skills. Each group were required to present and Identify
CDIO Skills using CDIO Syllabus to Identify the Gap. The requirement is to conduct a course gap
analysis exercise which involves Mapping selected CDIO across course and modules; and having an
Outcomes after the Gap Analysis to ascertain CDIO skills in the program. Dr. Jessie Mantalbo, Dr.
Romeo Gavino, Mr. Joel Pinkihan, Engr. Lloyd John Estampa, and Dr. Nelyne Lourdes Plaza were the
speakers this day.

Day 3 Registration started at 8:00am at the N. Gonzales Hall. A continuation of the previous
activities was held this day. COMPONENT 2: DESIGNING AN INTEGRATED CURRICULUM. The
group activity on Mapping of Selected CDIO skills in the Program, Infusing CDIO Skills in writing
Learning Outcomes, comparing current practices compared to CDIO, demonstrating writing
learning outcomes for a module using selected skill, developing CDIO Skills using Integrated
Learning Experiences and Design an Integrated Learning Experience for a Program were some of
the activities conducted during this day.

In the afternoon, an assessment of CDIO Skills in terms of CDIO Context, Methods of Assessment and
the SP experience, examples and evaluation were presented by each group. Followed by
presentation of an assessment system for assessing CDIO skills in an integrated learning activity. Dr.
Jessie Mantalbo, Dr. Romeo Gavino, Mr. Joel Pinkihan, Engr. Lloyd John Estampa, and Dr. Nelyne
Lourdes Plaza were the speakers this day.

Day 4 Registration started at 8am. On the fourth day, topic about COMPONENT 3: DESIGN AND
BUILD was discussed. Generating Design Ideas, Brainstorming to generate ideas, Visualization on
the idea and Examples of Design and Build (Video from YouTube) were tackled. Introduction of
Problem and Scenario for Activity for Concept and Design of an Air Propolsion Vehicle was tasked to
each group. Followed by Presentation of Outputs in Concept Sketch, Design and Build Practice,
Working in groups to build prototypes and Ensure that prototype works. Second activity was
Implementing and Operating Design Ideas (Air Propolsion Vehicle) followed by the Presentation of
Outputs (Competition). The speakers were Engr. Rojien V. Morcilla, Engr. Divina Gracia D.
Ronquillo, Engr. Dahlia Gay A. Bunolna and Engr. Sylvester A. Badua.

Day 5 Registration was at 8:00am. Last day topic was about COMPONENT 4: DESIGNING ACTIVE
EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING EXPERIENCES WORKSHOP. Active and Experiential Learning
components were discussed - Experiencing Component 1: AUTONOMY, Experiencing Component 2:
MASTERY and Experiencing Component 3: PURPOSE. The Active Learning Methods and Tools for
Designing and Active Experiential Learning Experience were also tackled - Designing an
Experiential Learning Activity, Design Persona & Ideation, Design Concept Evaluation, Design
Curriculum Timeline and Gallery Walk and Presentations. Participants were asked to produce an
Active Experiential Learning Experience Design Module. Speakers were Engr. Mary Rose F.
Persincula, Engr. Marriane B. Malingan, Engr. Nelson P. Duyan, and Engr. Aileen O. Amora.

In the afternoon, COMPONENT 5: EVALUATION OF PROGRAMS was tackled. Recap of Component


1 (Intro to CDIO Framework) and Component 2 (Integrated Curriculum), Sustaining Educational
Change with AACCUP and OBE. Evaluation and Accreditation as well as mapping of CDIO Standards
into AACCUP and OBE. The current situation in Philippines with regards to AACCUP and OBE was
also discussed. CDIO Standard on Program Evaluation Example (std 3,4,5) using research questions
and methodology. The participants were ask to formulate research questions to evaluate the
effectiveness of CDIO implementation (based on Institutional common Best Practices).

Lastly, in the sharing and review of the week long event , Dr. Aile T. Amorado, Engr. Bryan V.
Bantayan, Engr. Cheryl O. Tayo and Engr. Ryan R. Tejada led the group.
