Writing Style of Francis Bacon in Of Studies

Francis Bacon is considered to be the first Major English essayist who discussed
philosophy in intellectual manner. He is believed to be the founder of Rationalism and his
unique aphoristic style embedded in his essays is the matter of his recognition. Bacon is
popularly known for his prose style which resembles that of Elizabethan and Jacobean writers.
His rhetoric style of writing makes him sound certain and creates a balance in the structure of
his sentences. Often he seems rational but that does not imply the fact that he becomes
emotional. What he writes is objective and it varies and displays a great talent for condensation.
He comments on the utility of human being.

The main focus of Bacons Of Studies resides in explaining to the reader the importance
of studying in terms of practical application. He argues that studies in whatever form, brings us
pleasure, joy and enhances our thinking , speaking ,power and writing ability adding charm and
charm to our personality. It grooms our personality. He says that reading enlightens our soul
and encourages us when we feel down and despondent. It brings sunshine in dark tunnels of
life. Reading is best escape. It keeps us mentally fit and flexible. It enhances our intellect helping
us to judge things. However, over-indulgence in studies makes us indolent and leads to
undesirable consequences. Often people appeared to look pretentious that invites derision
from others. He argues that people who are over-confident, cunning and deceitful have no
interest and appreciation for studies as they accomplish their goals through wrong means.
Some refute others views, according to Bacons argument this is not the aim of reading. He
explains that one should read not for the sake of reading but for personal interest. One must
read in order to gain knowledge and to think deeply rather than for the sake of argumentation.
It enables us to think logically and rationally. He explains one must not be selfish in sharing his
knowledge. He believes that knowledge increases when we discuss and share our knowledge. It
imparts special practical skills and creates a well-rounded man. Ones life is incomplete without

experiences. Experience sharpens natural abilities and helps us to deal with bitter reality of life.
One should be calm and kind to others. One should be good listener and let others to complete
their words before giving his own point of view.

He says,

Read not to contradict, nor to believe, but to weigh and consider.

His sentences in this essay are to be read slowly and carefully because his words are
fabricated with expressions which are compact and condense. His extensive use of poetic figure
and the blending of flexible writing style produce a distinctive aphoristic version of learned
quotations and allusions. His words are without wit and humor but his manner of delivering
expressions makes him capable of creating humor.

His flexible style of writing includes imagery of human life which fabricates striking
metaphors and similes to prove his point. They are vivid, different yet time apt and are pressed
to communicate with meaning.

He says the most in fewest words and that is the technique which makes his words easy
to be grasped. Indeed, the essence of Bacons strength lies in his conciseness. He knows how to
give rise to his thoughts and present them in an imaginative glow and charm whenever
required. His prose style is highly fitted for such dignified subjects as well as for ordinary.

Bacons use of wisdom and choice of words lends much charm to his style. His essay is
well-structured, logical and perspective. Every pithy every aphorism holds our attention and
arrests the reader in its beauty. Nevertheless, he wrote with great heed eliminating superfluous
concepts.

I am convinced that his writing style is magical and is suitable for all kinds of subjects
ranging from heaven to earth. His writing style attracts me a lot however, it becomes difficult to
understand. He seems to be obsessed with metaphors, proverbs Latin idioms and phrases. From
his essay off studies I conclude that every deficiency of mind can be enhanced and sharpened by
appropriate reading.
