Children welcome? No, in Britain. Yes, in Budapest

The police stared menacingly as we drove fo rw a rd w hile trying to get home.


Part o f do w n to w n Budapest was sealed o ff because o f a mass dem onstration.
There w ere traffic jams everywhere. But the policemen smiled and made way,
signalling th e ir colleagues to do the same, on spotting our tw o young children.
W hat a contrast w ith Luton airport, a fe w hours earlier. There, security officers
confiscated the childrens vitam in D drops and skin cream - both prescribed
medicines - fro m our hand luggage, brushing aside our protests.
Our trip opened my eyes to the differences in a ttitu d e to children between
Britain and elsewhere. Perhaps it is n o t so surprising th a t a recent UNICEF re
p o rt ranked Britain and America last out o f 21 developed nations in a table o f
childrens welfare, a fte r taking into account education, health, safety, fam ily
and peer relationships, material w ealth and o th e r factors. Denmark was ranked
the best place fo r children.
We are all to o ready to lecture the new EU m em ber states on w hat they must
do to reach our civilised standards, yet there is a lo t they could teach us about
fam ily values. Everyday politeness - courtesy and respect fo r elders - th a t has all
but vanished fro m Britain still thrives in Central and Eastern Europe. The fam ily
has retained its central place in society and children are valued above all else. In
some ways the w hole region, sealed o ff fro m the great W estern European up
heavals o f the 1960s, including fem inism and lifestyle politics, has been frozen
in tim e .
In Budapest strangers exchange greetings in lifts, wishing each o th e r good
m orning or evening and saying goodbye w hen they leave. Hungarian children
greet th e ir elders w ith the phrase cskolom - short fo r I kiss your hand -
which is both archaic and undeniably appealing.
Old ladies are always ready w ith advice th a t the to t is overdressed or under
dressed according to the w eather.
Hungarians o f all ages give up th e ir seats on public transport to m others and
fathers w ith children. Prams and clothes are passed on fro m m other to m other
on semi-permanent loan.
In Hungary, parents and grandparents ofte n move house to be near to one
another. Grandparents are happy to bring cooked fo o d and meals fo r th e ir
grandchildren if the parents are w orking. Families are used to living to g e th e r
here, and used to handling children. Its passed on fro m one generation to an
other.

Harry Potter and the lost desert grave of a teenage British hero

For 65 years the fam ily o f heroic boy soldier Private* Harry Potter had tried des

perately to find his final resting place. All they knew about the 16-year-old w ho
had lied about his age and marched o ff ready to fig h t fo r his country in 1937 was
th a t he had been killed and buried som ewhere in Palestine.
But now his grave has been rediscovered by devotees o f an entirely different
Harry Potter - the boy wizard fro m J. K. R owlings w orld-fam ous books. And Pte
P otters grave has been transform ed into a shrine fo r J.K. Rowling enthusiasts
fro m all over the w orld. So many flow ers and messages have been le ft there
th a t the inscription detailing the fate o f the real Harry Potter - killed in action at
Hebron, Israel on July 22,1939, aged 19 - has alm ost become obscured.
The headstone was firs t noticed by local admirers o f J. K. Rowlings creation
and w ord quickly spread in Israel, w here the books and film s have become im
mensely popular.
The news about P otters grave was soon picked up by the local paper and,
back in England, attracted the a tte n tio n o f the soldiers nephew, Alan Hinton,
54, w ho had been carrying o u t Internet searches fo r inform ation about his uncle.
Now the local m ayor has invited Pte P otters fam ily to visit so they can finally
pay th e ir last respects. The fam ily is pleased the story o f Pte P otters life is at
tra cting so much atten tion , even if the interest was sparked by a simple coinci
dence o f names.
Pte P otter was actually just 18 w hen he died, having lied about his birthday
to join the Arm y at the age o f 16 in January 1937. A fte r a fe w weeks training
w ith the 1st Battalion, the W orcestershire Regiment, he was assigned to its M o
to r Transport division and sent to Palestine, w here a rebellion had broken out
against the British mandate. Ten m onths later he is believed to have been shot
by a sniper, although his parents w ere never to ld the exact circumstances o f
his death. A tte m p ts w ere made to dissuade Harry fro m joining up, but the high-
spirited teenager had a good practical reason fo r w anting to leave home: w ith
three sisters and fo u r younger brothers, the fa m ilys three-bedroom house was
uncom fortably overcrow ded. His sister, now 82, said: Harry w anted to see a bit
more o f the w orld. Hed le ft school at 14 and w orked fo r six m onths fixing roller
skates, but then joined the carpet fa cto ry to bring in a bit more m oney.

The tyranny of the gym

nasium at the Third Space health club near Piccadilly Circus in London. Now
you m ention it, yes. Very nice. Thats the kind o f th in g people pay to come
here fo r. Its the little touches th a t make it special. Everywhere you go in the
Third Space, it smells go od , says Brocas, the clubs duty manager. Im scenting
gardenias, lilacs and, unless Im mistaken, a hint o f the palm-fringed island in the
Indian Ocean on a sum m ers m orning. Which is much b e tte r than the smell o f
arm pit, stale lager and concentrate o f uncleaned to ile t th a t my council-run gym
offers.
Its the little things th a t make people choose the Third Space, one o f Lon
d ons posh health clubs. Everything has to be pristine, says Brocas. Thats
w hy there are w arm , clean tow els everywhere, the changing rooms are spotless
and the w hole vibe is w a rm .
The philosophy is th a t you have three spaces in your life - home, w o rk and
here, says Brocas. Its the th ird m ost im p o rta n t space in our m em bers lives -
and fo r some o f them it s even higher. Its a spiritual centre in a w ay. The third
space in peoples lives used to be the church, or the pub. Now, at least fo r a
g row ing m inority o f Britons, it is the health club. Some just come fo r a steam
and a show er before they go o ut fo r the night. Some seem never to be any
w here but here. They w o rk out, send some emails, have som ething to eat, read
the papers, just hang. Its a great place to be.
Third Space members can use three floors o f gym equipm ent (the running
machines have individual TV screens), a 20m ozone-treated pool (the ozone
prevents the chlorine fro m making your eyes sting) com plete w ith chill-out mu
sic and soothing w ood panelling. They have a boxing ring, a clim bing wall and
th e re s som ething called hypoxic training cham ber which, by reducing oxygen
in its atm osphere, simulates w h a t it s like to w o rk o ut at 8,500ft. As fo r personal
training (w hich costs 40 an hour), the Third Space lists 29 trainers on its w eb
site.
M ost o f our members are very tim e-poor, says Brocas as we visit Fresh
and Wild, the clubs tw o-storey organic foods superm arket. The lack o f tim e
means th a t we ta ilo r our services so people can get the m ost o ut o f the experi
ence. Thats w hy in our medical centre you can see a GP at lunchtim e w ith o u t
having to take the m orning o ff o r having to go back to w here you live. Youll find

As the winners o f an international com petition to live on a Scottish outpost,


the Americans -Tom Hyndman, w h o is 44, his w ife Liz Musser, 45, and th e ir
son Henry, w ho w ill celebrate his sixth birthday this week - have become the
islands newest residents.
It is alm ost tw o m onths since they le ft Saratoga Springs in New York State,
population 19.2 m illion, and started th e ir new life on this small island, population
73. Situated halfway betw een Shetland and Orkney, o ff the north-eastern tip o f
Scotland, it is the m ost rem ote inhabited island in Britain. They le ft behind the
21 pupils in Henrys class, as well as friends, fam ily, good careers - she w orked
as a photog ra pher and TV producer, w hile he ran a successful business making
hats - and a city bustling w ith lots o f restaurants, departm ent stores, museums,
cinemas and art galleries. Now, Henry shares a class w ith one o th e r pupil; there
are a to ta l o f eight in the school. There is no pub, hotel or restaurant, no d octor
or resident nurse; but there is one small shop (closed Tuesdays and Thursdays)
and a w orld-fam ous bird observatory.
The w eather is so bad tha t, w hen planning a trip , islanders often allow five
days just to get to Shetland - last sum m er there w ere hardly any flights o ff the
island because o f fog. The island, a short flig h t or a two-and-a-half-hour ferry
ride fro m Shetland, can be cut o ff by bad w eather fo r days on end.
The Americans w ere chosen last year fro m over 800 w ho responded to an
SOS fo r new residents fro m the islands owner, the National Trust fo r Scotland
(NTS), which bought it in 1954. The m ost com m on reasons given by applicants
keen fo r a new life are the need to get away fro m the city and to raise th e ir
children in a crime-free environm ent. Judging by the response to the NTSs ap
peals, there is clearly no shortage o f people eager to give up th e ir amenities and
suburban com forts, even th e ir pension plans, to escape to one o f Scotlands 90
inhabited islands, 44 o f which have fe w e r than 20 residents.
When an SOS goes out, it is presented as an invitation to an idyll w here chil
dren w ill be raised to skip cheerfully through the kitchens o f neighbours, never
encountering a locked door, speeding car, or drug pusher. But is the reality as
blissful as this peaceful and rom antic popular portrayal?
In many ways it has exceeded our expectations and I sometimes th in k we
are still in this infatuation, honeym oon period, says Liz. But there are immense

challenges. Simple things th a t w e d take fo r granted back home can become
hugely problem atic. Still, they are optim istic.
So the big question: w hy make such a life-altering move? Liz, w ho grew up
in southern California, initially heard the Fair Isle appeal on a radio show w hile
stuck in rush-hour traffic. When she g o t home she to ld her husband it was tim e
fo ra change.

Charles buys remote Welsh estate - for himself and as a nice

A t firs t glance it does n o t seem to be a home fit fo r a fu tu re king. Nestling in a


rem ote spot in south-w est Wales, the farm house boasts only three bedrooms,
the crum bling outbuildings need w o rk and the gardens are n ot all they could be.
But look a little closer at the estate and it is possible to see w hy the prince has
decided th a t this is to be his firs t home in Wales.
That rem oteness which w ould p u t others o ff w ould attra ct the prince, w ho
so values his privacy. He m ust also have been charmed by the areas legendary
links to alternative medicine and its m odern connections to organic farm ing and
rural crafts.
The prince hopes th a t the estate could be used as a training centre fo r local
young people, and the princes people also revealed th a t permission w ould be
applied fo r to extend the house so it could be rented o u t as a holiday home. Pay
ing guests, it was promised, w ould be able to range freely over the house and
even sleep in the royal couples bedroom . For that, locals said yesterday, the
prince m ight expect m ore than the 300 a w eek th a t o th e r cottages in the area
o fte n earn.
The prince is hoping to use local craftspeople in the renovation w o rk - if, th a t
is, there are any local people to find. In recent years the pub, post office and
the school in the village, M yddfai, have all closed dow n because there are not
enough perm anent residents to use them . Many cottages in this Welsh-speaking
area are second homes, ow ned by rich businesspeople, o r are let o ut to holiday
makers. Prince Charles, it seems, may be adding to the problem .
Some question w hy the prince needs a rural hideaway in Wales. And, o f
course, if he and Camilla fancy a change o f scene, he has a range o f royal resi
dences to choose from . Some nationalists w ill be dismayed by the princes new
Welsh bolthole. But m ost people in M yddfai were cautiously positive. They hope
Charles arrival w ill be a boost fo r the local economy. He is a supporter o f the
farm ing com m unity and so w ill be w elcom e because o f that.
The history o f the estate, which dates back at least to the 17th century, is fasci
nating. The origins o f the unusual Welsh name, which means W orm w ood Grove,
may be bound up w ith the legendary Physicians o f M yddfai, doctors renowned
across Europe because o f th e ir know ledge o f herbs. The Physicians are reputed
to have been bequeathed th e ir knowledge by the Lady o f the Lake, w ho van
ished into the w aters in unhappy circumstances and is said to haunt the area.

Three masterpieces vanish without trace

For the guards at W h itw o rth A rt Gallery in M anchester it was just another quiet
Sunday m orning. But as they prepared to unlock the doors and let in the visitors,
staff realised w ith horro r th a t three o f th e ir m ost prized pictures had vanished
from the collection.
The W h itw o rth , founded in 1889 w ith a bequest le ft by the Stockport-born
engineer Sir Joseph W h itw o rth , is internationally renowned fo r its collection.
The tim in g o f the raid, and the care w ith which it appears to have been carried
out, indicates the foresight and organisation o f the thieves w ho snatched the
pictures. By the tim e the th e ft was discovered, the pictures were probably miles
away; possibly even o u t o f the country. It isnt usually an inside job in these
cases, said Alexandra Smith, operations manager at the A rt Loss Register,
which m onitors stolen works. It is o ften done by outsiders w ho have w orked
o u t the security system, identified the m ost valuable paintings and planned
an entry and escape route m eticulously.
Their m ethods may be as simple as hiding inside at closing tim e, when other
people are leaving, said Dick Ellis, an art risk consultant. The W h itw o rth has
been particularly busy recently thanks to the success o f its exhibition o f pho
tographs, and the hordes o f visitors w ould have provided plenty o f cover fo r
thieves w ho w anted to get inform ation before the raid.
W hile art lovers often imagine th a t paintings are stolen to order fo r unscrupu
lous collectors, experts say m ost art th e fts are carried o ut fo r ransoms or so th a t
the w orks can be used as collateral fo r criminal deals.
If people have stolen them fo r ransom it is very likely th a t in a fe w m onths
tim e the people w ho have the pictures w ill contact the police, insurance compa
ny or the gallery itself and say they can get access to the painting and get it back
if someone is w illin g to pay m oney, Ms Smith said. Or they are m ore likely to
trade on the black m arket w here the paintings can be used instead o f money
in drug deals and fo r gun running. Money is traceable, but pictures can change
hands much m ore easily and can cross over borders w ith o u t being detected.
But even if the W h itw o rth manages to recover the pieces, the sad tru th
is th a t the w orks returned to it may bear little resemblance to the works
it lost.
One o f the big concerns in this case m ust be th a t because these are w ater
colours they need to be looked a fte r rather m ore than oils, M r Ellis said. If the
recovery takes some tim e - which is quite likely, because the statistics show th a t

m ost suitable habitats. Beavers need 2km lengths o f river away fro m human
populations, w a te r at least 6ocm deep and ideally w illo w and poplar trees on
the river bank.
Despite th e ir n o to rie ty fo r nibbling th e ir way through trees to create th e ir
immense dams, according to the rep ort by Natural England, they could have
a significant, but largely positive effect on English rivers and w ildlife. Studies
fro m all over the w orld have shown th a t they can increase the variety o f plants,
birds, fish and mammals. A t the same tim e th e ir dam-building habit can also in
crease flooding, damage crops and may affect some fish populations.
Beavers w ere a natural part o f the British countryside until they were hunted
to extinction fo r th e ir fu r and the secretion fro m th e ir scent glands, which was
believed to have medicinal properties. They m ostly died o ut in the 16th century,
although there is evidence some hung on until the 18th century in some northern
rivers. Several beavers are to be introduced to a rem ote part o f Scotland in May
fo llo w in g a 10-year long battle betw een conservationists and landowners, and
there are plans to reintroduce them in Wales.
R introductions have been successfully made in m ost mainland European
countries but the re port says there needs to be wide public consultation before
going ahead in England. There is a strong possibility th a t beavers could do well
in England. But they are n o t going to come fo r some tim e. Reintroducing them is
tim e consum ing and expensive. They could have a range o f environm ental ben
efits but could only be reintroduced under the right conditions, said Natural
Englands chief scientist.
Polls suggest th a t the public w ould be in favour, but many landowners and
farm ers are dubious. The English countryside has changed enorm ously since
beavers w ere last seen here in large num bers, said the Country Landowners
Associations president. We have a landscape unlike th a t o f much o f the rest o f
the w orld - one th a t has been actively farm ed fo r hundreds o f years.

Family history

In 1854, a black slave named Archibald M on teith dictated an account o f his re


markable life to a missionary. As a child, Archibald had been transported from
his native Nigeria to w o rk on the Jamaican sugar plantations, travelling on one
o f the last slave ships to cross the A tlantic before the abolition o f the British
trade in 1807.
This detailed biography, which recorded his spiritual beliefs as well as his
struggle to buy his ow n freedom , was circulated in Christian periodicals across
the globe. W hether he was aware o f it or not, Archibald had also set dow n
a docum ent th a t w ould provide fu tu re generations w ith som ething unique
am ong those descended fro m slave stock: a fam ily history.
Nearly tw o centuries later, Archibalds great-great-great-grandson David
M onte ith recalls the m om ent when he firs t became aware o f his extraordinary
ancestor. When I was eight, I rem em ber I asked out a girl at school and she was
w hite, and she said to me, Youd be all rig h t if you were w h ite . I rem em ber go
ing home and te lling my mum th a t I wished I was w hite, and she sat me dow n
and to ld me about ancient black civilisations, just trying to ro o t me, and th a t
was when I really became aware o f Archibald being part o f the fam ily history.
David is a 38-year-old Londoner, w ho w orks as an actor. His own parents
moved to the UK fro m Jamaica in the 1960s, and he was born in this country. But
the m em ory o f Archibald has remained pow erful since his youth, and last year
he decided to retrace his ancestors passage fro m Nigeria, a journey th a t w ould
co n fro n t his sense o f fam ily history in the m ost unexpected o f ways.
David firs t travelled to Nigeria, to the p o rt w here Archibald recorded board
ing a slave ship bound fo r the Caribbean and the area w here his ancestor was
likely to have been born, and spoke to the current elders o f th a t com m unity.
David then travelled to Jamaica, w here m ost o f his fam ily still live. A lm ost eve
ry Jamaican is descended fro m slaves, and the island was Britains largest slave
colony. There he uncovered docum entation o f Archibalds purchase. His original
slave name was Toby, but he was later baptised and renamed Archibald. M on
te ith was the name o f the slave-owning fam ily th a t bought him.
David is aware th a t he is in a special position. I think everyone has an innate
desire to know w here th e yve come fro m . But its a lo t easier fo r Europeans and
others because those records exist. In Jamaica, no other fam ily is able to trace
th e ir fam ily tree as fa r back as the M onteiths.

ered fro m the land and its surrounding waters, despite the fa ct th a t barely
a quarter o f Scottish soil is under cultivation.
W ith such native riches, no elaborate tre a tm e n t is required to make the m ost
m outh-w atering o f meals. From hum ble origins, the art o f Scottish cookery has
developed over the centuries to achieve international renown.
In Celtic tim es the sea was held in religious awe. The eating o f fish was fo rb id
den, as they w ere held to be sacred to the pagan goddess Venus, and this must
have made the diet fa r more frugal than necessary. But by the eleventh cen
tu ry Catholicism had spread in Scotland, and the vast fishing grounds o f coasts,
rivers and lakes began to be exploited. So plentiful w ere freshw ater fish th a t
as early as the th irte e n th century Scottish salmon was pickled and exported to
London, w here it was considered to be a food fo r the poor! So im p o rta n t did the
harvesting o f the sea become th a t coastal tow ns sprang up and thrived or fell
w ith the flu ctua tion o f fish stocks. Scots fisherm en found they had to com pete
w ith the Dutch, w ho w ere only to o efficient at harvesting th e ir waters, and this
led to blows in the fifte e n th and seventeenth centuries.
Nowadays we are fig h tin g through diplom atic channels to preserve fishing
lim its around our Scottish coasts, because overfishing has caused a dangerous
depletion in fish stocks.
Early cooking m ethods w ere simple. The fuel fo r the fire was usually peat, and
over this w ould be hung the bake stone, which was superseded by the grid-iron,
and the kail-pot. The form er, which is still very much part o f the Scottish kitchen,
is a round, flat, cast-iron plate w ith a hooped handle. It to o k the place o f the
oven, and on this was baked the daily bread, which o f course was unleavened.
The kail-pot was also made o f iron, and was a large round saucepan w ith a lid
and three legs. It stood over the fire and simmered the stews and soups which
form ed the daily menu.
Hardly anyone possessed a built-in oven, and it was the abbeys and monas
teries which were am ong the firs t to do so. During the eighteenth century the
kitchen range became a widespread acquisition, but before this it was custom
to take the days baking to the public bake houses in these religious establish
ments, which w ere such a focal point in com m unity life.
It was during the seventeenth century th a t Scotlands m ost fam ous product
was properly developed. I refer, o f course, to whisky. Aqua vitae was in fact

distilled in religious establishm ents as early as 1494, but it was not until much
later th a t the practice became widespread in the Highlands. Before this the
Highlander drank either fresh w ater, or m ilk and its by-products, such as

Looking back on eighty years

The w o rld I entered w hen at the age o f eighteen I became a medical stu

dent was a w o rld th a t knew nothing o f planes, m otorcars, movies, radio


or telephone. It was a very cheap w orld. When I entered St. Thomass Hos
pital I to o k a couple o f furnished room s in Vincent Square fo r which I paid
18 shillings a week.
I had enough money to go to the theatre at least once a week. The pit, to
which I w ent, was not the orderly th ing it is now. There were no queues. The
crow d collected in a dense mass at the doors, and w hen they w ere opened
there was a fierce struggle, w ith a lo t o f pushing, elbow ing and shouting, to get
a good place. But th a t was part o f the fun.
I spent five years at St. Thomass hospital. I was an unsatisfactory medical
student, fo r my heart was n o t in it. I w anted, I had always w anted, to be a w rit
er, and, in the evenings, a fte r my high tea, I w ro te and read. Presently I w ro te
a novel, called Liza o f Lambeth, sent it to a publisher and it was accepted. It
appeared during my last year at the hospital and had som ething o f a success.
It was o f course an accident, but naturally I did not know that. I fe lt I could af
fo rd to give up medicine and make w ritin g my profession; so, three days a fte r
passing the final exam inations which gave me my medical qualifications, I set
o u t fo r Spain to w rite another book. Looking back now, and know ing as I do
the terrib le difficulties o f making a living by w ritin g , I realise I was taking a fear
ful risk. It never even occurred to me. I abandoned the medical profession w ith
relief, but I do n ot regret the five years I spent at the hospital - fa r fro m it. They
ta u g ht me p re tty w ell all I know about human nature, fo r in a hospital you see
it in the raw. People in pain, people in fear o f death, do n ot try to hide anything
fro m th e ir doctor, and if they do he can generally guess w hat they are hiding.
I began this talk not intending th a t it should have an autobiographical ele
m ent, but I do n o t seem to have been able to avoid it. The next ten years were
very hard, and I earned an average o f 100 a year. Then I had a b it o f luck. The
d irector o f the Court Theatre p ut on a play th a t failed; the next play he had
arranged to p u t on was n o t yet ready, and he was at his w its end. He read a play
o f mine, called Lady Frederick, and, though he did n ot much like it, he th o u g h t it
m ight just run fo r the six weeks till the play he had in mind to fo llo w it w ith could
be produced. It ran fo r fifte e n m onths. W ithin a short w hile I had fo u r plays run
ning in London at the same tim e. N othing o f the kind had ever happened be

How to cope with the mess in your teenager's room?


If a teenagers room looks like a natural disaster, should parents simply 0 or
insist th e ir child clean it up? Experts views differ.
An author o f several books about teens recommends th a t parents set

How did the Jeep get its name?
Were all fam iliar w ith the all-purpose vehicles J)__. But very fe w o f us know
th a t th e ir design began as a contest sponsored by the United States govern
m ent. A four-w heel-drive vehicle th a t was practical, 1 , and could carry at
least a quarter-ton load was needed fo r the army troops o f the Second W orld
War. But the vehicle could not w eigh m ore than 2,160 pounds. Three autom ak

ers subm itted designs. One o f the companies had a problem w ith the w eight
- they w ere 250 pounds 2 . A t the last m inute, they revised th e ir vehicle
to see how they could 3 . The revisions w ere so close th a t only one coat
of paint could be p ut on the prototyp e. The second coat w ould have made the
vehicle to o heavy.
In the end, the army decided to use a Jeep th a t 4 o f three designs
from the three diffe re n t companies. The many abilities o f this special vehicle
may have helped lead to the Jeep name. The vehicle 5 as a fact-finding
spy car by the army in 1940, and it arrived w ith the letters GP painted on its
side. The letters stood fo r General Purpose, and many people claim th a t the

Appearing in comic strips during the late 1930s, he was a little creature w ho ate

A 100-year-old theatre in Argentina was transformed into world's
most incredible bookstore
Book lovers and theatregoers alike, consider planning your 0 to Argentina
to check o ut a spectacular, 1 bookstore built w ith in the old Grand Splendid
Theatre in Buenos Aires. Located in the neighbourhood o f Recoleta, the struc
ture originally opened as a theatre in May 1919 w ith all kinds o f perform ances

In 2000, architect Fernando Manzone converted the space into the El Ateneo

w ith bookshelves holding over 120,000 books. Still, signs o f the buildings fo r

Why did people once hold parties just to watch someone vacuum?
England was 0 to crow n the new king, Edward VII, and the throne room
was being prepared fo r the celebration. A t the last minute, it was discovered

H. C. Booth had an idea. He was the inventor o f a new kind o f carpet

Divers Find 400-Year0ld Silk Dress in Dutch Shipwreck
Divers in the Wadden Sea found a fancy 0 gow n partially buried in the sand.
The gow n is well-preserved and may be one o f the m ost im portant artefacts
ever brought up fro m the sea floor.
The dress was recovered o ff the Dutch island o f Texel, which was, fo r
a tim e 1 . U nfortunately fo r traders, Texels location also made it a prime

Many o f those wrecks have been washed fu rth e r o ut to sea, but some remain
in the relative shallows surrounding the island. Divers generally avoid disturbing

in 2 fro m the 1600s divers found 3 and brought it back to the surface.
They opened the package in the open air and realized they had found the
contents o f 4 , and th a t someone m ust have been p re tty rich. There were
silk knee socks and a jacket, as w ell as a silk bodice em broidered in silver and
gold.

Lazy Finns developed the first ice skate 5,000 years ago
to save energy

Archaeologists have been puzzled about w hy people started skating fo r a long


tim e. Now, new research has offered an answer.
In central and northern Europe 5,000 years ago people struggled to survive
the severe w in te r conditions and it seems unlikely th a t ice skating developed as
a h obby," said one o f the researchers. As happened later w ith skis and bicycles,
I am convinced th a t people firs t made ice skates to lim it the energy required fo r
th e ir daily journeys.
The scientists p ut th e ir theory to the test and made replica skates modelled
on examples held at museums. Volunteers on ice rinks in the Alps had th e ir
heart rates, oxygen intake and skating speeds measured w hile they tried out
the prim itive skates. From these data, researchers were able to calculate energy
consum ption and the efficiency o f th e ir skating. They discovered th a t being able
to skate over the frozen lakes in ancient Finland saved 10 per cent o f people's

Anti-sm oking lobbyists said today th a t a ban on smoking in all cars should be
considered. They claim the pollution caused by one cigarette in a car is as bad as
a pub filled w ith smoke. According to a report, stopping smoking in cars is vital
in cu ttin g the exposure o f children and young people to the toxins in second
hand tobacco smoke and it is also a safety issue .

Time is up for the old parking meter

Parking m eters are to be abolished in some parts o f Central London - thanks


partly to thieves breaking into them and stealing thousands o f pounds a week.
Drivers w ill now pay by credit card via m obile phone if they w ant to use one
o f the 440 parking lots in some central areas. Several other authorities are con
sidering making drivers use parking m eters th a t may be in another street and

Did I ever tell you about m y summer holiday? It w as absolutely good. I went
to Greece w ith m y family for a week. The journey w as much more long
than I expected. While we were travelling I w as reading my new book about
the Greeks, and sleeping. When we got there, we travelled to the hotel by
bus. The hotel w as near the sea! There were a television and air condition, as
well. The beach w as cheap and cool.
While it w as raining, we stayed in the hotel and we were playing cards.
I won 10 times! These were advantageous.
But there were some disadvantageous. For example the fridge w as too
small. You couldnt put there as much food as you needed. And the door
m ust be shut strongly. But these problems werent too exciting (the least for
m e).
I advise this hotel for y ou. Its called Moonshine, and its in Asprovalta, in
the northern part of Greece.
When we arrived home, I realised that I had to learn because the autum n
has arrived.
