Personal Statement

Without a doubt, electricity has been one of mankinds greatest inventions and it has
completely reshaped our society. Our reliance on it however has been both a blessing and a curse,
as our thirst for electricity has led us to abuse Earths fossil fuel stores. Over the past decade it has
been firmly established that we have been causing unprecedented levels of climate change through
our unsustainable usage of fossil fuels, which is polluting the environment and is the root cause of
major problems such as mass animal extinctions and agricultural disasters. For our society to not
only keep progressing at the same rate as it has in the past decades, but also for less developed
nations to be able to flourish, it is crucial that we innovate in terms of renewable energy systems
so that we are able to fuel our progress in a sustainable way.
There are numerous ways in which we can try and create this sustainable progress, from
improving solar panel efficiency and electrical vehicle range to designing better ways of storing
energy; and this is where Electrical & Electronic Engineering comes in to place, as it is the
creativity and know-how of engineers from this field that will contribute to the design and
implementation the energy systems of tomorrow. Driven by my desire to create a better world and
my passion for the science and potential of renewable energy, it is within this field that I believe I
can make use of my knowledge and skills to make a significant impact.
In my university studies, Ive had the chance to improve my engineering knowledge and
skills in various areas. By taking part in the electric machinery module it allowed me to understand
the intricacies of how electric motors and inverters work. The computer architecture module gave
me the chance to use various software applications and platforms, including Arduino, MPLAB and
Microchip to programme devices such as humidity and temperature sensors. I have also completed
an online course from the University of Georgia in Energy 101, which gave me an understanding
of the fossil fuel and renewable energy ecosystem and technologies.
In addition to my university work, I have been constantly trying to develop my skills and
knowledge in a work environment. During my time at Depanero, a service centre for electric and
electronic devices, I learned how to diagnose devices and identify their problems, decide on the
most appropriate method of repair and carry out the repair to a high standard and in the most
efficient way possible, so that clients would be able to recover their products as soon as possible.
I also had the opportunity of carrying out an Excellency Internship at Siemens Corporate
Technology Romania, which not only allowed me to take part in research in areas such as
electronics, imaging and computer vision but also provided me with experience working with Java,
J2EE, C++, software testing and Linux.
Although engineers rely heavily on hard skills, it was my aim to jump at opportunities that
allowed me to develop my soft skills as well. Apart from enjoying and learning to work with others
in team projects at university, I also coordinated the student groups within the lab sessions and
acted as point of contact between students and professors. Within my work environment, I got
involved in promoting our services both live and online, through social media campaigns and by
organising and delivering marketing events.
I am a true believer in the power of setting clear goals, where just like in the practice of
engineering, it is important that you measure everything accurately. My short term plans involve
coming to the UK to study a Masters degree, so that I can take advantage of the world-class
teaching and research of which your university is certainly part of, which will not only allow me
to vastly improve my knowledge and skills, but will also allow me to develop from a multicultural
perspective. I then plan to apply that knowledge and skills to help developing countries become
energy-independent through the use of renewable energy, so that the 1.2 billion people of the world
that still dont have access to electricity can do so in a sustainable and efficient way.

Yours Faithfully,
Eusebiu Ciorobea
