CREDIT: 1 unit
TIME ALLOTMENT: 3 hours per week
This course is an introduction to creative practices within digital technologies. A broad survey of
the history of digital arts is examined in tandem with a survey of software including Adobe Photoshop,
Sound Forge and Macromedia Flash. Emphasis is placed on making creative projects for the web.
Students apply knowledge and skills to creative projects throughout the term. There are lectures, reading
assignments, studio projects and critiques during the course designed to aid the student in developing
visual literacy and critical thinking skills in relation to the digital arts.
FIRST QUARTER
MULTIMEDIA
Objectives
Explain the difference between bitmap and vector graphics
Be able to understand multimedia elements and authoring tools
Identify and discuss important movements in the history of art and their impact on art styles,
themes, and techniques.

SECOND QUARTER
ADOBE PHOTOSHOP
Objectives
Develop knowledge of fundamental concepts in bitmap and vector art.
Identify and discuss digital art applications for Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.
Follow basic routines for correcting bitmap images, applying effects, adding text, and saving files
for the Web in Photoshop.
Follow basic routines for making selections, and adding fills, strokes, and color, and saving files
for the Web in Illustrator.
Follow basic routines for adding black and white and filter effects to digital photographs in
Photoshop.
Create a set of digital art pieces through exploration and experimentation.
Develop a short essay expressing their personal views on creativity and inspiration.
